FOCUS: Looking Real/Really Looking

i was delighted to be asked to jury this exhibition for WAAM. My guiding principle, in selecting the artists i did, was a sensitivity to the shifting and contingent contemporary definitions of the Real. consider these snapshots from the weird future that is our present: Pokemon Go players stagger through mall parking lots like zombies looking for virtual treasure through the augmented reality of their phones; political pundits with incredibly life-like rubber heads heedlessly instruct us not to believe what we see, citing “alternative facts”; “deep-fake” videos produced with sophisticated cGi, voice synthesis and facial feature-mapping depict, with staggering verisimilitude, speeches by politicians that never actually happened.

Artists could be forgiven for becoming cynical, jaded, paranoid, or otherwise stultified by the seemingly-sisyphean effort required to clock in to the studio to produce another work to be launched into this image-saturated arena. the artists in this show, though, are not cynical or jaded. Quite the opposite, in fact. the work in this exhibition embraces complexity and paradox and celebrates poetry.

richard Pantell’s large canvases depict quiet, quotidian moments with unflinching earnestness. Ralph Moseley’s geometric abstract paintings evoke the ubiquitous eye of global aerial surveillance. Alon koppel transforms a vintage stereoscopic viewer into a time machine, overlaying historical and contemporary images of Palestine. irwin Berman’s small but vibrant gouache and ink drawings bristle with energy. Joyce Washor saltzman’s diminutive watercolor meditations on a drinking glass are the visual equivalent of a Zen Buddhist koan. the sympathetic subjects in the unsettling and beautiful paintings by Philip Palmieri look back at the viewer with only one good eye. kenneth ragsdale’s obsessively constructed and painstakingly lit-and-photographed sets, designed entirely from memory, picture a complete and oddly plausible world made only of paper-thin surfaces. the intense chiaroscuro and painterly prowess of russell ritell’s large canvases

conjure the violence and drama of caravaggio. Francesco Mastalia’s ink-jet prints of wet-collodion photographs depict, with impossibly shallow depth-of-field, the piercing eyes of contemporary yogis. And the charmingly quirky paintings of elise Pittelman memorialize not only the celebratory events depicted, but also the photographs on which they are based; excerpts from an index or lexicon of new York Jewish culture of the 1950s and ‘60s.

each of these artists, in divergent ways, show us their reality of what it is to be human. some look real, some are really looking. All are urging us to take a moment to breathe and imagine other, more tenable realities.

Daniel Goodwin, October 2018
