Prime Cattle to 219ppk and £1466 Barren Cows to 178ppk and £1309
A small but good quality entry of prime and cull cattle were rewarded with a strong trade for all on offer with best finished
cattle to 219ppk given for a tremendous 612kg Limousin bred heifer from Mark Davis of Burlescombe which realised a
very decent £1337 whilst top total price for prime cattle was a massive £1466 (758kg x 194ppk) for a grand heavyweight
British Blue steer from Keith and Hilary Harvey of Bovey Tracey. More top notch cattle saw a well bred and covered
640kg Blonde heifer from Michael and Stephen Harvey of Hennock draw 209ppk and £1334 with the best of a good run
from Roger Adams, Cullompton (a 546kg Simmental steer) also rising to 209ppk. A couple of well turned out 550kg
Aberdeen Angus steers from Adrian Bowden, Drewsteignton both took home 200ppk. Best of the barren cows topped at
an incredible 178ppk for an eye catching 724kg Limousin from Mark Davis again, which grossed at £1285. Further grand
sorts saw South Devon barreners from Luke Knight of Ottery St Mary ease to 160ppk and £1309 whilst Aberdeen Angus
cows from Graham Heard, Broadclyst sold well and to 136ppk and £919. Dairy bred cows in demand with Holsteins to
£841 (716kg x 118ppk) for Steve Loud of Colyton and Jerseys reaching £351 (472kg x 75ppk) for GCB Davis of Westleigh, Tiverton.

Prime Hoggs to £130 & 244 ppk Prime Lambs to £95 & 250 ppk Cull Ewes to £124 & Rams to £120
A small New Year’s entry of sheep were another fiery trade with more pens selling over £100 than under and to a top of
£130 for Mark & Clare Davis of Burlescombe with overweight Texel
ewe hoggs whilst other overweights sold to £108 for Keith Rowell of
Crockernwell, £107 for Kye Trevelyan of Westleigh and £106 for both
Robert Seward of Silverton and Ray & Sylvia Toms of Cheriton Bishop.
46-47kg hoggs to £106.20 for Desmond Palfrey of Dittisham, £105.80
for Steve Harris of Littlehempston and £105 for Paul Trant of Halwell
as the best of the handy weights saw a super pen of 45kg Beltex
crosses from the Baxter family of Exwick soar to £110 or a sale
topping 244ppk. This was followed closely by Pollard Landscapes of
Ashburton with 44kgs at 243ppk (£107) as well as 45kgs at £105, more
of the same at £104.80 for Ken Luscombe and family of South Milton
who also had 43kg lambs at £99.80 and the 40-45kg weight range
averaged £101.69 and 233ppk. A high proportion of Hill bred hoggs
(nearly 200) peaked at £85 for 38kg Scotch wethers from Brian
Vallance of Bickington who had 37kgs at £84.80, sharing the top per
kilo for hill hoggs of 229ppk with Peter Heard of Okehampton when
his 34kg Scotch wethers made £78 and Abel Bros of Tavistock had
identical at £77.50 & 228ppk. SQQ of 227ppk down just 6p due
entirely to quality. The first of the New Season prime lambs saw 38kg
pure Dorset’s sell well at £95 or 250ppk for Three Valleys Livestock of Charlton Down.
A very tight entry of ewes saw Anthony Carter of Dawlish top both the ewe and ram section with a Rouge ewe at £124
and Lleyn ram at £120, other ewes to £117.50 for a trio of Texel’s from Steve Webber & Jo Tucker of Umberleigh and
£115, £107 & £104.50 for the usual quality continental’s from Mark Harvey of Slapton and Dominic Harvey of Tiverton
sold Lleyns well at £95.50 and Anne Brown of Ottery St Mary sold Dorset’s at £95. Steve Mitchell of Pennymoor sold a pair of lean Charollais rams well at £108 and overall average on the ewes was £4 improved at £81.

price per head for 44kgs from Keith Milton of Pennymoor who also claimed top price per kilo when his two pens of
smart 41kg lambs rose to 180 & 178ppk or £73.80 & £72.80 respectively. A great line up of well finished light lambs
from 28 to 39kgs saw top per head of £66 achieved by both Blackaton Manor Farms of Widecombe with 39kg
Cheviots and also of 38kg Suffolk crosses from Abel Bros of Tavistock who also parted with 33kg Welsh lambs at
£56.20, 31kg hill lambs at £54, 30kgs at £53.20 (177ppk) and a large pen of 28kg Scotties at £48.20. Overall average is
just a penny better at 170ppk.
367 CULL EWES & 20 RAMS/WETHERS
A short entry of just under 400 cull sheep sold with a better feel to the trade as mule and other medium weight ewes
were noticeably dearer than seen in a long time. Best crossbred ewes to £90 for a pair of Black Texels from Tracey
Pike of Luppit, £89.50, £88.50 & £86 for penfuls of strong Suffolk crosses from Tom Yandle of Mamhead and £87 for
similar from Tim Whitley of Widecombe. Others £75 to £84 depending on breed, condition and weight. Best mules as
mentioned looking £6-£9 dearer on the week with two pens selling at £77.50 & £74.50 for Brad Simmons of
Thorndon Cross, £76.50 for Ellen Yandle of Mamhead and a meated run from Sam Ursell of Tedburn St Mary sold to
£76, £74.50, £73 & £72.50. Hill ewes fewer in number and often £30 to £40 with no real strength present and very
few lots sold under £25. Rams a touch stronger trade too with Brad Simmons also topping these with a weighty
Suffolk selling at £99 followed by AJ Carter with a Texel at £92.50 and B Moseley of Hittisleigh realised £89. All cull
sheep averaged £62, which is up £10 on the week, half of the lift is due to quality, the other half is the strength of
trade.

Prime & Cull sheep Mortality and Rejection Insurance As of 1st April 2019 a levy of 15p (12p plus VAT) will be deducted from all prime and cull sheep sold at Exeter on a Monday to cover deaths and meat rejections associated with slaughter stock from this sale. There is an exception to this levy if a vendor is deemed to have an epidemic of cysticercus-ovis or similar, but in this unlikely event the auctioneer will liaise with the vendor in question.

RURAL REFLECTION DECEMBER 2020 Well suddenly we see ourselves in December and hopefully many of you will now have received your BPS payment!
Some farmers have also received their Countryside Stewardship payment alongside their Basic Payment which is an
added bonus. Looking back over the year, it has definitely been a different one with aspects nobody could have
planned for but over all of the Kivells office and departments, we continue to keep busy and we thank all of our
clients for their continued support whilst we work in a COVID secure way.
Having recently returned from maternity leave, it is good to be back in the office and get up to date with all of the on
goings and see many clients at market. Within the office we are seeing the Countryside Stewardship Applications
applied for back in the summer being approved, mainly the smaller ones at present but compared to previous years
we are seeing them come through a lot earlier. The Small Countryside Productivity Grants that were applied for back
at the beginning of November have also started to trickle in, which is looking promising and those businesses that
have been approved for a grant, have until 31st March 2021 to receive and pay for their items before making a claim.
The Agricultural Bill became Law on 11th November, which sets the scene for the 7 year agricultural transition period
between 2021 – 2027. This sees the phasing out of the Basic Payment Scheme, delinking of Direct Payments (BPS) and
the introduction of the New Environmental Management Scheme. DEFRA have outlined the key changes with the
main aspects in 2021 being;
1) The removal of greening rules – crop diversification, Ecological Focus Areas (EFA’s) and the permanent
grassland rules will no longer be relevant but this will not affect the overall payment received as the greening
money will instead be added to the BPS entitlement value.
2) The first reductions to BPS – everyone will receive a reduction of 5% on their first £30,000 of payments with
bigger reductions on the higher payment bands.
3) Start of a 3 year national pilot for the Environmental Land Management Scheme.
4) Improvements to existing schemes - the Countryside Stewardship Scheme will continue to be available with the
last new applications being accepted in 2023. Anyone that has a Countryside Stewardship Agreement that starts
after January 2021, who gets offered a new Environmental Land Management Scheme, will be able to withdraw
and transfer to the new scheme with no penalty. Therefore anyone considering applying for a new Countryside
Stewardship agreement in 2021, it is worth looking to see what options are out there.
On the property side, we have seen a tremendous couple of months here at Exeter with a range of property types
seeing prices often achieving in excess of their guide prices. We have just completed on Higher Swannaton Farm
which included an extensive farmhouse, two well designed barn conversions, an extensive range of modern and
traditional agricultural outbuildings along with 57 acres of pasture land in a stunning location which saw a huge
amount of interest. We have also completed on the Land at Christow being a smaller acreage on the edge of
Dartmoor. We where we were inundated with interest and it sold well in excess of the guide prices. This shows the
huge demand for small pieces of land where people can own ‘a little piece of Devon’, something we have seen
increasingly popular since the first lockdown.
Following a very successful Autumn trading in the farm agency department, we have a number of blocks of land and
farms in the pipeline so please watch this space, and give the office a call to get registered so you are kept up to date
with any properties coming on the market. Likewise if you are interested in discussing the possibility of selling in the
spring, please do not hesitate to contact your local Kivells office a call and we would be more than happy to carry out
a market appraisal and discuss how we can help with marketing.

Weather wise, compared to the autumn of 2019; 2020 has been very kind to us with opportunities to get the winter
crops in and livestock staying out slightly later than they would have in 2019. Let’s hope this weather continues and
we do not have a long winter ahead.
As always, please give your local property and professional office a call if we can help with any matter and ‘we wish
you all a jolly Christmas but a jolly safe Christmas!’
