Welcome to the Technology in Healthcare Guide from Exertis.

While doubts have recently been cast over the National Health Service’s ability to successfully make the £22bn of efficiency savings it was striving for, this has resulted in a new era of opportunity unfolding within the healthcare sector for Exertis resellers.

Now, more than ever, the introduction of the latest in highly efficient digital technology will play a role in helping the NHS to streamline processes, improve efficiency and optimise the quality of patient care it delivers, while also helping it get its finances back on track. That’s why we’ve created this guide. It’s been designed to help develop your understanding of how the latest developments in Computing, Print and Networking technologies can benefit healthcare leaving you better informed when having conversations with your healthcare customers.

It goes without saying that Exertis offers a vast range of products that will help to boost efficiency and reduce costs in healthcare environments. However, succeeding with the NHS requires more than just relevant products - and that is where Exertis’ specialist teams can add real value. In addition to our healthcare product knowledge and expertise, we add tangible value through our services. These range from pre-configured equipment delivered next day or a drop-shipped straight to your end customer, as well as on-site surveys and installation services. We can help you refine and develop your healthcare value proposition and then successfully deliver on it, opening up new opportunities that build incremental and sustainable revenues for your business, while at the same time helping the NHS achieve healthcare’s ultimate goal – to put patients back at the centre of care, in order to achieve more positive outcomes.

A healthy outlook for IT

There’s no doubt that the healthcare and IT industries are bedfellows of necessity. The former is at a major turning point as doctors and hospitals strive to find ways to satisfy the needs of their patients whilst battling with meeting budgetary constraints. Healthcare has been accused of being slow to embrace technology in an increasingly digital age. Progress is more of a steady slog than headline making disruption but there are clear signs that this is now changing.

Mobile devices in healthcare

Over the past few years, mobile devices (smartphones, tablets and their apps) have become commonplace in the workplace and healthcare hasn’t been immune to that. Indeed, there has been a variety of applications specifically for physicians and admin staff ranging from medical calculators to clinical presentations and actual Electronic Health Records (EHRs). Whilst there has been a growing demand from consumers (patients as well as hospital staff) for greater access to and portability of health information, there is equally a demand for retaining privacy. Hospitals and the medical profession need to ensure that they have proper security features in place to cope with any data breaches which could do considerable harm to their reputation.

In addition to the smartphone, wearables have entered the marketplace and many of these have an impact on healthcare as individuals use these to monitor their fitness, diet and even quality of their sleep. These applications and the information they provide enables the individual to take greater control of their own health and, if shared with doctors, can potentially aid diagnosis and prescription. Indeed, there are now numerous wearable biosensors (WBS) that can be used to constantly measure blood glucose levels, heart beat rate and other biometric data. This real time information can then be sent wirelessly to healthcare providers or monitors. WBS is a rapidly growing wearable health technology sector and the Samsung Simband watch was a good example of how this type of technology is being brought to market. Thanks to Wi-Fi and Bluetooth technology, development in biosensors can help patients to have on-going monitoring of their health statistics and save money for the healthcare industry on continuous care and monitoring.

Big Data in Healthcare

According to an Accenture report on Healthcare Technology, they refer to what they term a “platform revolution”: that is the ever increasing ubiquity of mobile and cloud platforms that far surpass merely the ability to track in real-time a patient’s health. Rather this is a platform that addresses interoperability by capturing data from disparate sources such as wearables, phones and biosensors and pulls it all together to give a patient and caregiver a holistic and real-time view of the patient’s health.

Many analysts believe we are facing a data explosion which transcends the healthcare industry as much as anywhere. In fact, big data has become so big that some 41% of healthcare executives say the data volume their organisation manages has increased by a staggering 50 per cent in just over a year as highlighted in the Accenture report. However, it’s the ability to be able to analyze and manage large sets of data that will provide better outcomes and possibly lower cost of care. Healthcare organisations that handle large numbers of patients need to focus more on data warehousing and reporting solutions. For IT specialists, it provides the opportunity to build complex back-end solutions with easy to use front-end reporting tools. Analytics will provide valuable insights at the point of care but analytics alone won’t be an answer or solution for all problems or difficulties unless organisations and providers have access to more robust patient tools.

Cloud adoption likely to increase for EHR

Of course not all patient data and information is currently stored in one place and whether hospitals and doctors have the desire or even the ability to use the personal data we collect from wearables is debatable. However, there is a growing demand for patient data to be more portable and that requires records to be stored electronically. According to a study in the US by Premier (a healthcare alliance), about 95% of healthcare providers say interoperability challenges limit their ability to transfer data from one medical centre to another. Susan DeVore, CEO of Premier, believes that whilst there has been significant inroads into e-records those records are not able to seamlessly talk between different entities. With patients using both a private and a state service, the position isn’t likely to be that different in the UK either. The cloud is a possible solution and it is expected that cloud-based Electronic Health Records (EHR) adoption will continue because of its adaptability and flexibility. However, cloud security will be of paramount importance to patients and hospitals alike.

Patient-friendly technologies

Competition in healthcare organisations isn’t new particularly in the private sector. Hospital reputation is intrinsically linked to patient volumes. Health IT, surgical technology and the like help to shape the reputation, but how a hospital accommodates its patients directly with technology is just as critical. "Competition for patients in many markets is fierce, so the smart hospital is the one that leverages IT that directly impacts the patient," says

Vince Ciotti, a principal at health IT consulting firm H.I.S. Professionals. He highlighted a number of patient-friendly technologies that could make a positive difference to a hospital’s reputation and customer satisfaction.

Speech-assisted automated attendant systems

Hospitals can stay competitive and also save money with a voice recognition phone system. The systems could reduce staff overtime, improve customer experience, reduce telecoms costs and help to avoid dropped calls or unpleasant patient interactions. Nuance Dragon Professional’s SpeechAttendant connects to a PBX or IVR and uses Nuance’s advanced speech recognition technologies to deliver an enhanced self-service experience to customers by routing callers through menu-driven options and providing frequently requested information such as operating hours, mailing address, and driving directions to callers.

Self-register kiosks

Similar to self-check-in stations at an airport, self-register kiosks can be strategically positioned, ER and outpatient registration areas that are secured, and patients can verify their identities or update their information. This can improve customer service, reduce and identify queuing, and provide a private and convenient way to book in or out of units. The Lenovo ThinkCentre M93z All-in-One (AIO) has been designed to combine user comfort with technological brilliance. The sleek design lets the AIO fit snugly in any working environment. With the latest Intel Core processors, Graphics, Hybrid HDD and superfast USB 3.0 ports, performance has never been higher. Excellent manageability features with Intel vPro and a host of green certifications make the M93z a true all-in-one.

Wireless connectivity

Physicians, clinicians and other staff members are not the only people in a hospital who live on their mobile

devices and smartphones. Similar to restaurant chains, hospitals should offer a friendly WiFi connection to make it easy for patients and visitors to access the wireless network. The NETGEAR WN2000RPT. Move with ease throughout the hospital knowing your wireless laptops and mobile devices will now stay connected even in the far corners. Boost your WiFi coverage and bring WiFi connectivity to wired devices like Smart TVs or game consoles.

Bedside computer terminals

Bedside computer terminals allow patients to see the processes happening around them while still enabling physicians and nurses to update patient records efficiently. The FUJITSU PC ESPRIMO E420 delivers high-quality computing for your back office applications and projects at a very attractive price point. You can choose cost-optimized fixed configurations for immediate delivery.

Hospital telephones

Doctors and nurses must have a good telephone within the hospital in case of emergencies occurring outside of the hospital. BT phones come with BT Trace for Health organisations which is operated by using the hospital wireless network, tagged assets are tracked and their locations are displayed on a computer screen. 100 name & number directory and 3 number speed dial. Caller display type 2 with ability to dial from a 30 no. Hands free function with on hook dialling and volume control. Digital answering machine with up to 16 minute recording time.

Tablet Device in Hospital

Smart phones and tablet computers could potentially redefine healthcare, and at hospitals. Far more flexible and

bedside-friendly than even small laptops, these handheld devices promote safer, better, and faster care by enabling doctors and other caregivers to educate themselves and their patients on the fly. Here at Exertis we provide a wide range of tablets, from LG to Samsung and Acer to Lenovo but also with our very own tablet range, Linx. The Samsung Galaxy Tab A is cleverly optimised for doctors and nurses alike, helping them to share content throughout the hospital, connect and browse on the internet.

3D Printing is a natural extension of 3D imaging

More and more surgeons and interventionists are requesting 3D-printed models for complex patient cases in order to fully understand the relationship between anatomical features or practice the procedure on the bench. The Big Builder Dual-Feed Extruder 3D printer enables you to create superb quality, highly accurate 3D objects while saving both time and money. No more self-assembly or DIY-kits; just install and print. The Big Builder Dual-Feed Extruder is able to print 2 colours/materials through 1 nozzle. Printing PLA with PVA as support material is not an issue for the Big Builder Dual-Feed Extruder.
