He studied only elementary school because his family didnt have mush money. He had an accident on his leg. When he was 14, he worked as assistant in La Prensa magazine. He traveled to Europe to study. He stayed in France, Italy and Germany. In Italy Jose knew Ana Chiappe, he fell in love with Ana, they got married. In 1932 he established the AMAUTA, it was his own magazine. Mariategui was amputated of his leg. Then he began to make a great effort to accept the life on a wheelchair.

He wrote 7 ENSAYOS DE INTERPRETACIN DE LA REALIDAD PERUANA, it was his master piece.
