Executive Director
THE OPPORTUNITY The Foundation for Advancing Family Medicine (FAFM) is the fundraising arm of the College of Family
Physicians for Canada, the professional organization responsible for establishing standards for the
training, certification and lifelong education of family physicians and for advocating on behalf of the
specialty of family medicine, family physicians and their patients.
FAFM is seeking a driven and collaborative fundraising leader for the newly created role of Executive
Director to provide strategic and operational leadership to FAFM’s activities. This role was created in
response to the strategic decision to increase awareness and engagement through philanthropy to
support the work of family physicians across Canada.
The inaugural Executive Director will be an experienced fundraiser and leader who will blaze a trail as
we grow the Foundation and its revenue streams including major and planned giving, partnerships, and
events. In this leadership role, the Executive Director will work as a member of the Executive Team of
the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) to establish and leverage critical connections
between the CFPC, its members and the Foundation. As the lead fundraiser, the Executive Director will
build a strong culture of philanthropy across the organization and motivate others by sharing the
meaning and impact of their collective work.
Reporting to the Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer of the CFPC and working closely with
the FAFM Board of Directors, the FAFM Executive Director will create a vision and execute the
strategies, programs, and operations of the Foundation. Building on the strong relationships with
current partners and with the support of a capable staff team, the FAFM Executive Director will grow
new and existing relationships with internal and external stakeholders alike to increase support of family
physicians across Canada and around the globe.
ABOUT THE FOUNDATION FOR ADVANCING FAMILY MEDICINE
Established in 1994 and with the vision of providing the best care for all, Foundation for Advancing
Family Medicine is dedicated to advancing excellence in research, education, and service through
philanthropy. Contributions to the FAFM fund numerous awards, grants, and scholarships, as well as
initiatives to support the training and continuing professional development of medical students, family
medicine residents, and family physicians.
3
Currently, total revenue for FAFM is approximately $1.5 million per year. Philanthropic revenue
representing about $500,000 comes from events, corporate partners, individual donors, employee
giving, and the physician community, with the goal building capacity to drive sustainable growth.
Each year the CFPC is proud to host Family Medicine
Forum, Canada’s largest and most comprehensive
conference dedicated to family medicine. The Family
Medicine Forum is an opportunity for family
physicians, residents, medical students, researchers,
and teachers to learn more about the CFPC and its
role in establishing standards for the training,
certification, and lifelong education of family
physicians. Attendees are encouraged to engage with
and support the FAFM.
The following are some of the key fundraising priorities supported by the FAFM that improve
patient care domestically and internationally:
Honours and Awards Program: Each year, we fund hundreds of awards, grants, and scholarships
through the College of Family Physicians of Canada Honours and Awards program. These reach family
physicians, medical students, and residents, and help support them in their studies, research, and
physician care. We are proud to support learning opportunities, continuing education initiatives, and
research in family medicine across Canada.
Family Medicine Research: Family medicine research is the basis on which family medicine is built. It
produces the evidence that supports clinical practice and helps promote the value of family medicine as
a cornerstone of the Canadian health care system. The FAFM supports the production, synthesis, and
transfer of these results into best practice approaches to patient care.
Patient’s Medical Home: A network of family doctors and other health care professionals working
together to provide and coordinate a comprehensive range of medical and health care services
appropriate to the needs of that practice’s patients and the communities it serves.
Family Medicine Education: Family Medicine Education creates and supports a sustainable workforce
in family medicine. Donations to this area support education, continuing professional development,
research, and teaching initiatives that keep family physicians at the forefront of medicine throughout
their professional career.
The Besrour Centre: Canada is a recognized leader in training and delivering family medicine, and is
a valued collaborative partner by countries that need our help establishing strong, successful, and
supported primary care systems. The Besrour Centre leverages this leadership to create meaningful
global impact through three areas of focus:
4
Research and quality improvement — Generating and sharing knowledge to strengthen health systems globally.
Transformative partnerships — Engaging Canadian and international stakeholders to advocate for the common goal of robust family medicine worldwide.
Advancing medical education and training — Leading the way in developing the careers of young and emerging family medicine leaders in Canada and around the world.
