Herculaneum

Herculaneum was a residential coastal town which has been superbly preserved due to the fact that it was covered in vol-canic mud during the eruption of Vesu-vius in 79 AD. The guide will give people the chance to view the town from above before heading down and beginning the guided tour which lasts about an hour. The buildings have been so well pre-served that you can walk down the streets pretty much exactly as the Romans would have done over 2000 years ago! There are still original timbers showing in the buildings and clay pots stored as they would have been at the time of the eruption. The tour takes in many of the most important sites including the public baths with their well preserved frescoes and mosaics along with the shops and gymnasium and much more. It is all in all a fascinating tour of possibly one of the best preserved examples of a Roman res-idential town in the world, brought to life by the years of study and knowledge of our guides. Return to resort around 1 pm.

Escorted by the guide, clients will explore the main features of the ancient city in-cluding the baths, bakeries and theatres just to name a few. The city of Pompeii is usually visited in the morning although this can change during high season. Af-ter lunch in Pompeii, the coach departs for Mount Vesuvius. The coach takes the guests to mt.1000 and if the customers wish, they walk the rest themselves. The customers purchase their entrance tick-ets. There is a man at the foot of the vol-cano who has walking sticks which the customers can hire for a small charge to help them walk up to the crater. Upon reaching the crater, a local guide will walk them around the crater (we can-not guarantee this service will always be available). Customers then have free time to walk around. Return to resort ap-prox. 16:00/17:00

Hercolaneum was a residential town without Pompeii’s commercial impor-tance, surrounded by the villas of the wealthy Romans. When the catastrophe of 79 AD oc-curred Hercolaneum was submerged under a torrent of mudd and lava that hardened into a soft tufa (a kind of course rock) that preserved many of the timber features and household objects which can be seen today. A large por-tion of the old Hercolaneum is still buried un-der the modern town and even today excava-tions are going on to discover what treasures lie buried under the rock, to the extent that some families are being rehoused so work can continue.

Departing from Sorrento in the morning. The coach joins the Amalfi coastal road which is one of the most stunning coastal drives in Eu-rope. The scenery is superb, looking out over the Mediterranean and along the coastline as the road twists and turns its way towards the town of Positano (approx. 20 minutes from Sorrento). The town is built on different levels from the main road all the way down to sea level, giving the image of a waterfall of build-ings cascading down to the sea. As the coach can’t stop here guest can enjoy the views and take photos from the bus. This spectac-ular journey continues with fabulous views all the way to Amalfi (approximately 1 hour). Arrive in Amalfi around 10am depending on traffic. Guests have 2 hours free time in Amalfi where a guided boat trip along the coast may be possible dependant on availability and weather conditions. Customers can also visit the magnificent 9th century Cathedral which proudly dominates the main square of Amal-fi, wander through the narrow streets of the town and browse the many shops or enjoy a coffee in one of the cafes around Amalfi. After lunch stop, the excursion carries on to Ravello which is situated on the hillside above Amal-fi. This is where Wagner was inspired to write part of one of his operas and it is from here that you can enjoy the best views of the Amal-fi coastline looking over to Minori, Maiori and beyond. Return to resort approx. between 4.30pm and 5.30pm

Cassino

Monte Cassino Abbey has unjustifiably escaped the attention of many British visitors to the Sorrento area and is well worth a visit. Situated at the top of a hill it commands spectacular views over the city of Cassino. The Abbey was found-ed in 529BC and was looked upon as a place of holiness, culture and art for which it became renowned on a world-wide level. Steeped in history it has been destroyed and rebuilt 4 times in its 1400 years. The most recent and infamous destruction was during the 1944 battle of Monte Cassino in World War Two. Be-cause of its strategic position it was oc-cupied by the German forces and used as a vantage point to attack the allied forces advancing from the South of Italy. Upon leaving the Abbey we head down to visit the Commonwealth War Ceme-tery. Many of the soldiers who fell during the battle are buried here. This cemetery is beautifully maintained and overlooked by the Abbey. After free time for lunch there is a visit to the World War II muse-um. The museum offers many different exhibitions commemorating those, of all nationalities, who lost their life in the battle. Departing the museum at 03.30 pm the trip arrives back in Sorrento at ap-proximately 5pm.

Located in Sant Angelo with fantas-tic views over one of Ischia’s most quaint fishing villages, the tropical thermal park has 9 different temperature pools, ro-man grottoes, spa, saltwater pool, indoor thermal pool and a beauty farm where customers can pamper themselves or just relax. The mortella garden, started in 1956, was created on the site of a gi-gantic stone quarry, and designed by En-glish landscape designer Russell Page, containing many beautiful and innova-tive concepts. Extending over an area of 16,000 square metres, these beauti-fully landscaped gardens complete with pools and fountains have thousands of unusual, rare specimens of Mediterra-nean climate plants from around the world. Guests will be transported back to Ischia port in time for the 5.20pm boat back to Sorrento. This is the only boat back to Sorrento from Ischia.
