Brief description of the ancient village of Sardara

The city of Sardara is located on the island of Sardinia, just 30 minutes from the

international airport of Cagliari (the latter linked by direct flights from the capital of Italy

Rome and the city of Milan and charter flights from many European cities) and is only 40

minutes from downtown and the port of Cagliari. The airport and the city center (port), to

reach the village of Sardara you can take the train that takes you in 40 minutes to the stop

of San Gavino and from there by bus to Sardara (10 minutes).

It is an important agricultural center and spa and excellent food and wine. For many years

Sardara holds the recognition of "orange flag" that is the mark of quality tourism

environment of the Italian Touring Club, addressed to Italian places that are distinguished

by an offer of excellence and high quality of hospitality.

Sardara is a town of about 4,000 inhabitants with many corners of history to tell, from the properties of its thermal waters (similar to those of Vichy in France), the nuraghic remains dating back more than 3000 years ago, to the settlements of the Roman Empire the Middle Ages. Also important they are the culinary tradition (bread, pasta, sweets, oil, wine) and the technical craft.

1. History & Archaeology – A visit to the ancient village of Sardara

On this tour we visit the museum "Villa Abbas" at the center of the village, which will involve a path that will make you relive the old days, between the Middle Ages and the nuragic of this town and the south of Sardinia.

Visiting the museum will take you back several centuries and, by the path that passes through a medieval castle, dating from the period of the Roman Empire to the 'age of the Nuraghi (about 3000 years ago).

The visit continues with the archaeological area of St. Anastasia, at the center of the village of Sardara, unique complex nuragic period that is within a city.

Within the annex is a Sacred Well, where in antiquity its water was considered a healer of all ills.

The ancient village of Sardara you can take a course in bike-tour to get

to visit the remains of the "Castle of Monreale", located about 5 km from the village.

The castle of Monreale is located on top of a hill, at a height of about 280 meters, in the

municipality of Sardara and the area below the castle you can still see the ruins of the

village. Its location allows you to admire the entire surrounding plain to the city of Cagliari

(60 km far away). It marked the border between the kingdom (judged) of Arborea, which

was a part, and that of Cagliari and was used as a defensive line of the kingdom and as

the residence of the royal house. The fortress reached its maximum splendor with the

reign of Eleanor, the last sovereign independent state of Sardinia until 1404.

3. Visit the city of Cagliari

Cagliari, the largest city of Sardinia!

We are in the south of Sardinia and, as the capital of Italy Rome, Cagliari is situated on

seven hills that identify the seven districts of the city.

The city was inhabited for more than 5,000 years ago, as the resources of the sea and the

fertile land of the surrounding plains, guaranteed livelihoods.

The historic heart of the city is the medieval quarter called "Castle", located in the highest

part of the city.

It starts from Sardara and you get to Cagliari near the port and from there you can start

your tour of the city with a walk under the arcades of Via Roma and then up here in the

high areas and the city's oldest.

Cagliari is to visit all year round:

• During the Carnival parades are held characteristics of masks;

• In Easter time we organize the rites of Holy Week;

• On 1 May is celebrated as the most important event on the island of Sardinia: the feast of

Sant'Efisio: groups in traditional costumes from all over the island, hundreds of horsemen

and numerous decorated floats participate in the big parade in the center of the city;

• The first Sunday in July is the very characteristic procession on the sea.

From April to October it is recommended for a ride on the train Cagliari, running through

the streets of the old city of Cagliari and the medieval village and, at the same time, you

can enjoy the sun and the sea in the beach promenade of Cagliari called "Poetto" , about 7

km long.

4. A day at the beach

For a day at sea we recommend these two beautiful beaches:

Beach of Portixeddu

Portixeddu is a small town at the foot of a slope, with a beautiful view of the sea blue and crystal clear, with a long beach of fine white sand about 2 Km.

The seabed is almost exclusively sandy and very low in some places and the water is crystal clear and transparent.

The Mistral wind is often featured on this beach, making it ideal destination for surfers.

Beach of Piscinas

Piscinas is a true desert formed by towering dunes.

The beach is about 3 km long, fine golden. The sea, emerald green, is now pretty deep,

with a sandy bottom.

In both beaches rent umbrellas and sun beds, canoe and paddle boats. Kiosk / bar. Car

5. Nature – UNESCO site Barumini + Natural Park “Giara di Gesturi”

Barumini – Site UNESCO “Su Nuraxi”

Visit the village Nuragico "Su Nuraxi", the UNESCO. It is a settlement dating from the sixteenth and fourteenth centuries BC.

Some scholars believe that the oldest part of the Nuraghe (Nuraghi are stone buildings),

was bound to a religious purpose or goal of shelter or home to the village chief, while the

towers were added most probably intended for military purposes and warehouse .

Around the nuraghe it was later built a nuragic village to house the population. The village

consisted of about fifty huts, used as houses, meeting places and centers for the

processing of agricultural products.

Natural Park “Giara di Gesturi”

The day continues with a visit to the highlands of Giara. The jars are the highlands covered with cork and Mediterranean and were once used as natural fortresses. Inside the park is home to the wild horses of the Giara.

7. Historic route

Morning

Visit the Nuraghe "Genna Maria" Villanovaforru (15 minutes from Sardara). What is the Nuraghe? It is a typical stone building conical present only on the whole

territory of the 'island of Sardinia. They are unique and representative of Nuraghic (present

from about 3,000 to about 2,000 years ago in the Bronze Age and Iron Age).

The complex "Genna Maria", which is at a height of 408 meters above sea level, consists

of a central tower around which was built a bastion. Much later fù added walls in defense

of a 'settlement dated to the Iron Age, of which little remains today.

The Nuragic Village fù probably destroyed by a sudden fire and many tools and objects of

everyday use, because of the hasty abandonment of the site, were found almost intact in

their place after 3,000 years.

Also interesting is the visit to the Archaeological Museum which is located at the center

of Villanovaforru, rich nuragici artifacts, pottery, lamps and old coins.

We will continue the visit to the Tomb of the Giants of Siddi (20 minutes from Nuraghe Genna Maria). It is one of the most extraordinary examples of funerary architecture Nuragic of Sardinia. It was assumed that the burial chamber could hold up to three hundred depositions, gradually accumulated in the time after its construction. Unfortunately, there is no bone fragment was found. The tomb was used until the Roman Empire. It is fabricated with smaller blocks in the lower part (the first three rows), and blocks much larger in the upper zone (the two rows residues highest). Today do not know the reasons for this singular choice of construction, however, in contrast to the general way of building of nuragici, which usually were setting bigger blocks in the lower areas of the buildings and the smaller ones in the upper reaches.

Afternoon

Visit the Castle of Eleonora in Sanluri. We are in Sanluri, thriving agricultural center, famous for the battle of Sanluri where, in 1409, prevailed the Catalan-Aragonese that ousted the reign of Queen Eleanor, who was in charge of the last independent state Sardinian. The castle was built to guard the frontier of the kingdom of Eleonora, and today inside there is a museum, open to visitors, which displays military objects and antique furniture.

8. Tour of two mines - Visit the Mines of Montevecchio and Ingurtosu

MINE OF MONTEVECCHIO

We visit the ruins of the Mine of Ingurtosu, about 30 minutes from the Montevecchio mine and about 45 minutes from Sardara, from which they extracted lead, zinc and silver. In the mining village were there the direction of the palace, the homes of employees, the church, the shop, the post office, the cemetery and a hospital.

9. Food and wine tour

10. Visit the undreground caves “SU MANNAU” and the “TEMPLE OF ANTAS”

Departure at 09:00 from Sardara:

11. Shopping of handicrafts of Sardinia
