2 Public Media Connect • January 2021
WelcomeDear Member,
Happy New Year! As we continue to experience the pandemic in our communities, we hope and trust that 2021 will bring health, normalcy and new opportunities to you and your families.
As we look back at 2020 and the adversity the pandemic created, we are reminded that it also created opportunities for us to rise to the occasion. It taught us to embrace technology, think outside the box to create fresh content and do more to serve our educators and students.
ThinkTV and CET are grateful for the strong community support we received in 2020. Your support allows us to produce local arts and culture programs while pursuing educational initiatives that better serve our communities. We couldn’t do our work without you, so thank you.
Of course the great work doesn’t stop. As I write, we are working on a documentary about Ohio women during the Suffrage movement; we are working on the second part of The Dayton Arcade: Waking the Giant; we continue to work with our art and performance partners to help provide a stage for their works; we continue our work on our weekly arts and cultural shows and we will begin working on projects around diversity, racism and inclusion.
In education, our work continues to create content that teachers and parents can use in the classroom and at home. We have tripled our professional development workshops for our teachers and look forward to being a resource to help guide them through remote teaching in whatever form that takes. CET and ThinkTV are proud to be much more than just great public television stations.
And we’re also proud of the great programming coming your way this year. This month kicks off multiple new shows from MASTERPIECE including a reboot of the classic All Creatures Great and Small, a late-in-life mystery called Elizabeth is Missing and Miss Scarlet and the Duke. We will also be featuring the stories of America told through Independent Lens, POV, NOVA, PBS American Portrait and more. We are especially excited to be airing a two-hour NOVA special on Percy Julian, the African-American scientist, industrialist, humanitarian, civil rights pioneer and self-made millionaire, called Forgotten Genius.
There are many great shows and programs to explore on-air and online as we kick of 2021, all possible thanks to your support.

As we kick off 2021, we wanted to share a few of the shows we’re looking forward to seeing in the coming months and to update you on Doc Martin.
First, a note from Chief Programming Officer Jim Wiener...
Attention Doc Martin fans: for the better part of two years, we’ve told you that a new season of episodes would at long last arrive January 2021.
Now it turns out they won’t.
Acorn Media owns Doc Martin’s American distribution rights and they have refused, again, to release them or
set any future release date for public television stations nationwide.
We remain committed to airing the new Doc Martin episodes… whenever they’re released. But the cost to re-purchase older seasons you’ve seen plenty of times becomes a waste of our precious acquisition dollars. So we’ll air our remaining episodes and be done with the series until new ones are released. My apologies to our Doc Martin fans, but as you well know, this is entirely out of our control.
And now to highlight a few of the shows that are coming soon:
Coming Soon

Coming Soon (Continued)The Black Church: This Is Our Story, This Is Our Song
Tracing the 400-year-old story of the Black church in America, this film reveals how Black people have worshipped and, through their spiritual journeys, improvised ways to bring their faith traditions from Africa to the New World, while translating them into a form of Christianity that was not only truly their own, but a redemptive force for a nation whose original sin was found in their ancestors’ enslavement.

New Video Collection and Content Sharing Partnership Aims to Raise SEL Understanding and ImplementationPublic Media Connect has partnered with the Montgomery County Educational Service Center (Montgomery County ESC) and the Chicago-based Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL), to create and share content aimed at helping educators, students, parents, caregivers and community members understand and make the most of social and emotional learning (SEL). Research from CASEL shows that schools that adopt SEL show an 11 percentile point growth in academic achievement as well as a reduction in drop-out rates and behavioral problems.
To meet the needs of educators, parents and community partners, ThinkTV and CET produced five videos focused on CASEL’s Indicators of Schoolwide SEL, five brain science videos with Bruce Perry, M.D., Ph.D., an international expert on trauma and its effects on the brain and behavior, and six videos about the Core Competencies of SEL. The videos are housed in collections on PBS LearningMedia and available on both YouTube and the PBS Video App. Additionally, Public Media Connect, Montgomery County ESC and CASEL worked together to create a social media and content sharing plan to ensure that SEL stays top of mind throughout the school year.
“We heard loud and clear from our partners that there was need on the part of educators for tools and resources to help them with the unprecedented challenges that they and their students are facing. We were so pleased to be able to leverage the resources of public media, in partnership with two leading organizations, to develop and distribute these tools for educators,” ThinkTV/CET Chief Education Officer Gloria Skurski said.
In addition to being available through ThinkTV’s education and public channels, they are available on the CASEL website, are being used in webinars and, in Montgomery County, are being included in training opportunities.
Support for this project comes from the Broadcast Educational Media Commission of Ohio, in partnership with the Ohio Department of Education. To learn more, visit cet.pbslearningmedia.org.

Stream “SHOWCASE with Barbara Kellar” on the PBS Video AppCOVID-19 and the need to socially distance our interviewees and our host created more challenges for SHOWCASE with Barbara Kellar than our other shows, because of the design of the program. Thanks to the creativity of our team and our host, Barbara Kellar, we were able to continue the show through 2020 by utilizing two separate studios and a side by side presentation of the show. While this created some unique editing needs, it allowed us to continue to provide a much-needed stage for the arts community and expand the digital focus of our program. All previous episodes of SHOWCASE with Barbara Kellar are available to stream online at https://watch.CETconnect.org/show/showcase-with-barbara-kellar/ or on the PBS Video App.
