What is X-ray Fluorescence?Elemental Analysis

Now let us come to the applications of X-rays. If we have appropriate instrumentation for structure analysis and, if we have our common sugar crystals, of course, we will have to select a proper “single” crystal, and provided with the correct software, by sending X-rays through the crystal and collecting the data, usually for several hours, we can determine its complete structure. By complete structure, I mean, we will get the details about where Carbon, Oxygen and Hydrogen atoms are located in the unit cell, their orientation, bond lengths, and also we can know how much each atom is vibrating in any given direction.

But, one may ask, why we need such information. This kind of structural information is very important, not only to understand the structure of the compound of interest, but it has been shown the crystalline structure of a particular phase directs its properties also. For example in the famous ferroelectrics, BaTiO3, the oxygen atoms form octahedra around the Ti atoms. These octahedra are not symmetric and the Ti atoms are displaced only to about 0.1 Å away from the center of the octahedron. This has been found to be the cause of the electrical properties it shows.
