With thousands of cartons to oversee for a customer base that relies on it for inventory management and package production, ABOX Packaging can’t afford to invest in any but the most efficient manufacturing solutions. When the time came to move up to fully automated diecutting, the Kaufman, TX, firm spent a full year scouring the market for a system capable of keeping up with its rising workload. In the end, the research pointed to one clear choice: a Dymatrix 106 CSB diecutter from Heidelberg.

The diecutter that the Dymatrix 106 Pro CSB replaced last November wasn’t an integrated system. Because of this, blanking had to be done on an offline unit, creating an undesirable production bottleneck in a plant with more than enough volume to keep six gluing lines busy. But now, says ABOX president Keith Thompson, “we can diecut, strip, and blank, and go direct to the gluer. There’s no more manual scrapping or offline blanking. It’s incredibly efficient.”

Thompson says that depending on the thickness of the substrate it is processing, the Dymatrix 106 Pro CSB can turn out as many as 8,000 carton flats per hour: 500 to 2,000 units per hour faster than the plant’s other two diecutters, which require offline blanking. He estimates that the increase in speed combined with the Dymatrix 106 Pro CSB’s fast makereadies has boosted overall productivity by 25 percent.

Gains like that are crucial for ABOX as it strives to keep its productivity in step with the 15 percent growth in sales volume that it expects to achieve this year. The company, founded in 1975 and acquired by Thompson and his wife, Stephanie, in 2003, is a printer and converter of custom folding cartons for a wide array of industries including medical, food packaging and office products. The plant, located 27 miles southeast of Dallas, comprises 200,000 sq. ft. of manufacturing and warehouse space.

The company runs mostly 12- to 36-point paperboard stock as well as a large volume of e-flute corrugated. According to Thompson,

this was another reason it opted for the Dymatrix, which can handle paperboard up to 2,000 gsm and 4mm corrugated. Other desirable features are its DySet® photo-eye registration, horizontal sheet path, automatic non-stop pallet feeding and delivery, minimal downtime and ease of use. “The user-friendliness is outstanding,” Thompson says.

He uses the same word to describe the installation, training, and post-sale support that ABOX has received from Heidelberg ever since the Dymatrix 106 Pro CSB went into production. “Because Heidelberg brought the right crew in beforehand, our need for training was minimal,” he says. “We knew exactly what to expect.” What’s more, “they drop by to check to see how we’re doing.” Thompson adds that his ownership experience with the Dymatrix is “90 percent” of the reason why the company decided to purchase its seventh folder-gluer—an ECO 105—from Heidelberg, which will be installed later this year.

Performance has been strong across the board for ABOX, which has tripled its gross revenues and more than doubled its workforce since the present owners took it over six years ago. Heidelberg, notes Thompson, is likely to play a continuing role in the company’s investment strategy. “We’re thrilled to death with Heidelberg as a corporation,” he says. “We will do business with them again.”
