Excell Researcher and Leadership Development ProgrammeImproving health and saving lives in Africa by developing the next generation of talented health researchers and research leaders

The Africa Research Excellence Fund (AREF), with funding from Robert Bosch Stiftung (Foundation), has launched Excell, a unique 2-year pilot researcher and leadership development programme that will work with African institutions to support emerging health research leaders in Africa.

Excell addresses two specific challenges: how to retain future African research leaders, who are too often lured away from their research careers in Africa due to lack of opportunity; and how to create the institutional environment that empowers researchers to lead.

The AREF Excell Researcher and Leadership Development Programme will

• Equip 20 African global health researchers from up to six institutions in Sub-Saharan Africa with the knowledge, skills and behaviours essential for healthy careers and leadership roles• Support their home institution as they seek to strengthen their research capacity through systematically developing their emerging research talent• Enable participating institutions and individuals to develop research strategies, win research funding and, over time, increase their research income, activity, reputation and impact• Promote researcher engagement with research-users, leading to more effective translation of research outputs into policy, products and practice• Deploy a unique package of learning and development resources, developed by AREF to share best practice.• Inform the shape and scope of a lasting researcher and leadership programme for Africa

Stepping stones to success

“…Today’s science and research systems demand complex capabilities, particularly of early-career scientists, and the Excell Programme will equip a new cohort of excellent researchers with the necessary skills. Since 2012, the Robert Bosch Stiftung has been collaborating with African universities and research institutes to strengthen the internationalisation and professionalization of early-career African researchers, and we are very pleased that AREF as one of the leading African research institutes is a new partner who shares our mission.” Dr Katrin Rehak, Head of the Science and Research Department of the Robert Bosch Stiftung (Foundation), Germany

The Excell programme’s 5 learning themes are:

1. The Effective Researcher 2. The Compelling Applicant 3. The Influential Researcher4. The Researcher as Manager 5. The Researcher as Leader

How you can make a difference

You may not be able to change weak health and research structures on your own. But you can equip a scientist to make a difference to communities and systems, and help contribute to the transformation of health outcomes in Africa.

• Every £40k can provide a Research Development Fellowship with placement at a centre of research excellence for a biologist, social scientist, statistical scientist, clinician or other outstanding early-career researcher

• For £60k, we can work with an African research institution to build and fund their own sustainable researcher-skills workshop series, with their own trainers - modelled on the AREF Academy grant-proposal development workshops

• For £100k, we can grant 3 AREF Seed Fund awards to enable African researchers with potentially winning innovations develop the research evidence needed for further support.

• £300k targeted to one of our Fellowship, Seed-Fund or Excell leadership programmes will help AREF attract matched funding and achieve sustainability.

Your involvement is vital in addressing the global health challenges of the future. Please get in touch. We would be delighted to share our vision further and to hear from you how together we can make a difference in health research in Africa for Africa.

Through your support, we will improve health and save lives in Africa.

“We must invest in promising young African scientists, they are the future innovators and leaders that will transform our continent’s health. The Africa Research Excellence Fund is Africa-based, African-led, for African scientists and we are all committed to African health. It is an important initiative.” Kofi Annan
