    HOW TO READ A COMPASS

There are four cardinal points on a compass - North, &outh, )ast and 4est. 4hen

reading a compass, and telling other people directions, ou need to wipe 5right5 and

5left5 out of our $ocabular. Right and Left are relati$e directions and di6er

depending on our location and direction, but the cardinal points are constant.

The direction halfwa between North and )ast is an inter-cardinal point and is called

Northeast. The other three inter-cardinal points are &outheast, &outhwest, and

    Northwest.

+inall, there are secondar inter-cardinal points halfwa between each cardinal

point and inter-cardinal point. These are North-Northeast, )ast-Northeast, )ast-

&outheast, &outh-&outheast and so on. 4ith these directions, ou can gi$e someone

a fairl good idea of what direction the need to go. 4e could add additional points,

continuing to break each section in half o$er and o$er, but telling someone to go

    )ast-)aste)astNorth)ast-)astNorth)ast would not be fun.

&ince there 1& a need for more precise directions, the circle of a compass face is

split into 789 marks called degrees. +or rough directions, go ahead and use North

or Northwest. #ut, for nding our wa or locating destinations in the wild, usedegrees.

No matter the compass, one end of the needle alwas points North. n our most

compasses, it is almost alwas the R) end, but it3s a good idea to test our

compass before starting to use it. 1f ou are north of the e;uator, stand facing the

sun around lunchtime. 4hiche$er end of the needle points towards the sun is &outh

and the end that points at ou is North.
