was established in which everycitizen voted directly for laws.

Rome was ruled by arepresentative government whichcitizens voted for people torepresent them and make laws.
Feudalism
(400-1200)
Most Europeans were bound byfeudal loyalties. Peasants owed loyaltyto their lord, who in turn owed loyaltyto a higher lord or a king. The king’spower, however, was limited by hisobligations to his lords.
The Magna Carta
(1215) The King of England was forced to
sign the Great Charter, whichresulted in a limited monarchy.The king’s power was limitedbecause he had to consult hisnobles to tax citizens and go towar.
Model Parliament
(1295) The King of England summoned to a
meeting with nobles, bishops, and twocitizens from each town in England.This meeting sets the precedent forelecting representatives of the peopleto form Parliament, a legislature thatmade laws for England.
Louis XIV
(1661-1715) In France, Louis XIV, an
absolute monarch, controlledall aspects of government,from the military to thetreasury.
The Glorious Revolution
1688 The established England as a
limited constitutional monarchy inwhich the power of the monarchywas severely limited by the lawsand tradition established byParliament.
The American Constitution
(1789) The American Constitution
established a representativedemocracy in which citizensvote for representatives tomake laws and a president toexecute laws.
