The MFS is composed of :Up to 12 GPU (GPRS Packet Unit) per subrack (11 + 1).
One GPU corresponds to one BSC.The subrack is also composed of Converters, synchronisation (over Ater) and Ethernet connections.
Two DIGITAL DECalpha Servers (called AS800),which insure the configuration of the MFSand a remote connection.
Internal Hubs, used for Ethernet connections.
It is not mandatory that the MFSis fully equipped in GPUs.

How many BSSs is it possible to connect to one MFS ?
Does only packet switched traffic go through the MFS ?
Does the MFS implement the GSM-defined PCUfunctions?
Does the A-ter and Gb interfaces carry the same type oftraffic ?
In the MFS, which board is associated with the BSC?

Purpose of General Packet Radio Service:
The GPRS allows the service subscriber to send and receive datainan end to end packet transfermode, without utilizing networkresources in circuit-switched mode
It allows a charging based on data volume (resources really used)
It also benefits the network operator who may then usescarce radioresources more efficientlyby sharing these resources
GPRS provides packet mode transfer of data for applications that
exhibit one or more of the following characteristics: Intermittent, non periodic (i.e. bursty) data transmission
frequent transmission of small volumes of data
infrequent transmission of larger volumes of data

Alcatel Solution principles
Smooth and cost effective introduction of GPRS in the BSS byminimizingthe hardware modificationneeded to the alreadyinstalled network elements
Only software upgradeis needed on the installed BTS, BSCand OMC-R
GPRS functions are introduced in one network element calledAlcatel 935 MFS (Multi-BSS Fast packet Server), one centralentity which controls several BSS and supports the GPRSspecific functions:
Packet Control Unit (PCU) function
Standard Gb Interface protocol stack
Maximumusage of the existing transmission resources
