PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

I recently attended a

meeting with community representatives during which the number of volunteers was mentioned as a proxy for organizational engagement. Here at The Emanuel, we are fortunate to have so many tireless and dedicated volunteers — leading services, attend-ing minyanim to enable a fellow con-gregant to recite Kaddish, providing professional advice, cooking, cleaning up flower beds, raising funds, helping with financials, etc., etc., etc.

In the first column I authored (July/August 2017), I wrote about wanting to honor volunteers serving the congregation and community and asked congregants to track their volunteer hours and provide the office with documentation of the tracked hours each time 100 volun-teer hours were completed. Although I know many of our congregants have “clocked” over 100 hours, I have not received any communication regard-ing these efforts. If I was a cynical person, I would think that no one reads my columns. However, I am not, and I suspect I know the reason I have not received any “time sheets.”

My hunch is that our volunteers are truly engaged and find satisfaction in their work on behalf of our congre-gation — many feel their holy work does not need public recognition. Regardless, on behalf of our congre-gation, I want to ensure that each of our volunteers knows how much their work is appreciated. I am taking this opportunity to reach out to all of our volunteers to say Kol Hakavod and thank you for all you do!

Looking forward to seeing you at our Annual Meeting on Monday evening, June 11!

Once again, we would also like to thank the many volunteers who helped package the baskets.

Have a great summer!

news from The liBrary

It is hard to believe the school year will almost be done when you read

this and summer will be just around the corner. I hope everyone has a sun-ny, warm and restful summer! Again, thank you to the Magalhaes family for donating additional chil-dren books to the library. The Pesach books especially were enjoyed by the students in Kindergarten through sec-ond grade. One of the books donated is titled The Language of Angels: A Story about the Reinvention of Hebrew by Richard Michelson. I actually was just about to purchase this title, when the Magalhaes family donated it. It was recommended to me by Judy Kronick. Judy informed me this book won the Jewish Book Council 2017 award for Children’s Literature. According to Judy, Richard Michelson has an art gallery on Main Street in Northamp-ton in an old bank. She said that much of the art work is oriented toward

children’s literature. There is original artwork by Dr. Seuss, etc. I have not been to this art gallery but hope to get there some time in the future. The il-lustrations in this book are beautiful as well. According to the School Library Journal, “Hebrew teachers and stu-dents in Jewish schools will welcome this gorgeous new picture book about how the language developed and the impact of one person’s perseverance on an entire people.” We also have various children’s Shavuot books that are being high-lighted in the library during the month of May. Also, for your information, in the Banks Garden Lobby, there is a new magazine rack with various Jewish magazines and current issues of the Connecticut Jewish Ledger, for those waiting for a meeting or Minyan to start.

by Risa Davidson and Janet Wallans, Co-chairs

The Songwriters’ in the Round event was a big success! Kudos to Susan Rosenstein for organizing this fund-

raiser to help support survivors of the Yazidi Genocide. The musicians included Hannah Berkowitz, Matt Kampe, Carrie Johnson, and Eric Paradine. Todah Rabah!! They all volunteered to return next year for another fund raiser. They helped B’Yadeynu raise $1,6000, which will be sent to IsraAID and Yazda, two nonprofits working hard to help the survivors. If you’d like to help us support these orga-nizations you may send a check to the office made out to Emanuel Synagogue with Yazidi Relief Effort written in the memo line.

B’Yadeynu continues to work with Integrated Refugee and Immigration Services (IRIS) to support their efforts to help refugee families resettle in Connecticut. Get in touch with our social action committee if you’re interested in learning more about our ongoing work. Co-Chairs: Janet Wallans ([email protected] or 860-278-4596) and Risa Davidson ([email protected] or 860-236-8889).

Did you know this past fall a group of Emanuel mem-bers met weekly to enhance the beauty around the

synagogue grounds? In the center of the synagogue is an area known as the Banks Garden that is an out-side garden surrounded by the walls of the syn-agogue. It’s a place to pray, talk and be together outside within the walls of the synagogue. It’s a kind of garden that in-cludes the heavens and earth that G-d created. The sculp-ture “The Shield of Israel” welcomes you as you enter. Come join us to plant, prune, mulch, fertilize, water, etc. for the beauty of our gardens. Both your time and donations are needed to enhance the beauty around and in our synagogue. We could always use a few more volunteers to help us this spring. Please contact Arlan Lieblick at [email protected] (Subject: “2018 Gardening”) or call (860) 424-7794 for details. Please also take a few moments to stop by and look at what we’ve done.

The Emanuel Synagogue will host Dr. Maria Sirois, seminar leader, inspiration

speaker and clinical psychologist, for two workshops on grieving. The first workshop “BROKEN/WHOLE: Exploring the Myths of Grieving,” will be held on Tuesday, May 8, from 6:00-9:00 p.m., at The Emanuel. The second workshop, “BROKEN/WHOLE: Practices of Belonging, Optimism and Meaning,” will be held on Tuesday, June 12, from 6:00-9:00 p.m., at The Emanuel. A light supper and Minyan are included on both dates. As we move through the raw territory of our suffering, we are brought to see ourselves and life through fractured eyes. Yet, the world’s goodness and beauty presents itself to us as well. Holding both views enables us to integrate practices that elevate our spirit and daily positive psychology practices (specifically addressing connection, optimism and meaning) that serve to nourish our health and wellbeing, even in the darkest of times. Dr. Sirois has published two books, her most recent, entitled: “A Short Course in Happiness After Loss (and Other Dark, Difficult Times). “ For more information about her, visit www.mariasirois.com. The workshops are free and open to all. RSVPs are appreciated by calling the synagogue office at (860) 236-1275, or signing up online at www.emanuelsynagogue.org.
