Everything you need to know about solvent dyes!
Dyes come in a number of options. In this article we are going to discuss about
some popular types of dyes, Solvent dyes! This type of dye finds its application in
many industries.
Theseare coloring agents that form a solution, by dissolving in organic solvents
and not in water.
The fact that these dissolve completely in the solvent without forming a layer,
makes them very useful. The best thing about these colorants is the fact that you
can achieve a consistent color with them.
These dyes are not ionized easily (i.e. these do not change polarity either due to
loss or gain of electrons). This is the reason why these dyes do not dissolve in
water, which is a highly polar compound.
Nomenclature and Classification
These chemicals are named according to the particular nomenclature system.
What is the system; let us have a look
The first word of the name is always solvent
Then comes the shade of the dye
And last, but not the least is the number
Some common example of this can be quoted as Solvent Blue 24, Solvent Red
36, and Solvent Yellow 164, to name a few.
These agents have been grouped together on the basis of their shade. For
example, Anthroquinone dyes is the name given to the chemicals falling in the
range of green and blue shades. Similarly, red and yellow colored chemicals have
been clubbed together as Azo dyes.

Azo compounds are majorly used in the textile and food industry, with more
than 70% of all the compounds used in these industries being azo colors.
Anthroquinone variety is used as plastic colorantcompounds, as these can
be developed into a diverse range of hues by altering their structure.
These dyes are used in the furniture industry for shading waxes, wood
stains, and resins.
These compounds can also find their application in the medical industry.
They are used for diagnostic purpose.
Solvent colorants are an integral part of research purposes, and are used in
the form of staining agents for identifying the structure and organization of
cellular components (both plant and animal cells).
The compounds also find their application in the printing industry, and are
used for manufacturing inks as well.
All the above mentioned applications of these solvent based coloring agents make
them an important product, which the field of organic chemistry has provided and
hence also make it widely popular.
