Maggie’s Penguin Parade is a free and accessible public art and cultural event that will see a colony of colourful giant penguins invade the city of Dundee during 2018, one of its most exciting years in history. We are delighted to be working with Wild in Art, one of the leading creative producers of spectacular mass appeal public art events to bring this wonderful parade to Dundee. The project will bring together businesses, schools, community groups, organisations, creative artists and the media in a celebration of our city. The project will also raise funds for Maggie’s Dundee, a charity which provides free practical, emotional and social support for people with cancer and their families and friends.
You can be part of the trail and support Maggie’s by supporting the Penguin Parade as a Sponsor. Please take a look at the great value sponsorship package and benefits detailed in this folder, and don’t hesitate to contact the team if you have any requests, questions, or ideas to support this great initiative for the city and for Maggie’s. Together we can help boost our regional economy, inspire civic pride, and showcase Dundee’s best assets old and brand new. This special project will attract visitors, provide free days out for children and families, help create special moments and memories that will last a lifetime, encourage healthy lifestyles and put your brand alongside Maggie’s at the centre of the design regeneration of Dundee.
Please join us in this great penguin adventure.
Thank you.

What is Maggie’s?
What is Maggie’s Penguin Parade?
2018 is the most exciting year for Dundee. The opening of the magnificent V&A Dundee, the regeneration of the waterfront and Unesco City of Design. Maggie’s wants to be a big part of it all and we think it’s the perfect moment to raise awareness and funds for our fabulous charity.
For three months in Summer 2018 the streets of Dundee and the surrounding region will be home to a trail of individually designed and beautifully decorated giant penguin sculptures showcasing the wealth of artistic talent in the area, creating economic and cultural benefits for Dundee. This project is brought to you by Maggie’s Centre Dundee, in partnership with Wild in Art, and will raise significant funds to support Maggie’s vital work caring for local people affected by cancer. Dundee has long had an association with penguins and replicas of these lovely creatures can be found throughout the city. RRS Discovery was the last wooden three -masted ship to be built in Britain and its first mission was the British National Antarctic Expedition. Discovery carried Captain Scott and Ernest Shackleton to Antarctica, the home of the penguin. The penguin has become a symbol of the great explorers who set out from Dundee. Our 100-strong waddle (yes, really that’s the collective noun for penguins) will supplement their more indigenous friends. Wild in Art is the global leader in the organisation of mass participation public art events which bring together artists, communities and schools with private and public organisations to create memorable and significant events for all to enjoy.
Maggie’s provides free practical, emotional and social support for people with cancer and their families and friends, offering a programme of support that has been shown to strengthen physical and emotional wellbeing. Built in the grounds of Ninewell’s Hospital, our centre designed by Frank Gehry, is warm, welcoming, full of light and open space. It is a place to find practical advice about benefits and eating well; a place where qualified experts provide emotional support; a place to meet other people or simply sit with a cup of tea.
Maggie’s Penguin Parade will include:
Attract more visitors, who will linger longer and spend more as
they explore the art trail laced
throughout the city centre and
wider area
Encourage residents to
become tourists in their own town, spend time with their families and increase pride in
our city
Raise awareness of
the great work that Maggie’s
does in our community
Raise significant funds to help Maggie’s
continue to deliver services and support in Dundee, Perth
and Angus
Miniature but magnificent
trails will appear
in Angus and Perth
throughout the Summer
Celebrate and provide paid work for local
artists, and showcase the
creativity of our region
Engage with schools and children
who will learn about these unique
creatures, paint smaller sculptures and be educated in an age appropriate way about cancer
in the family
A trail of dozens of giant penguin
sculptures across Dundee and the
surrounding region that will get people
out and about getting some exercise and rediscovering our beautiful evolving

Businesses, groups, charities, education establishments and individuals are invited to sponsor the large blank penguin sculptures. We then do a call to artists to submit designs from which the sponsor then selects their favourite. The artist will then create a unique piece of art work, customising the sculpture on behalf of the sponsor. The finished Penguin will be displayed across the streets, parks and public areas of Dundee during summer 2018 to create a fun and inspiring art trail.
Meanwhile children in schools across the city will be learning all about penguins, then decorating smaller ‘young penguins’ who will join their adult friends on the trail before returning to live permanently with their adopted school family.
After their time in the sun our big penguins will be sold in our charity auction in the autumn to raise vital funds for Maggie’s Dundee.
