3. by standing in solidarity with people striving to create a more just society.

Currently, 7 of 8 team members were formerly homeless and in the shelter system themselves. They are tremendous sign of hope and encouragement to people who are still homeless.

How does communal decision making process contribute to people’s empowerment?

• affirming dignity and respect of every person• I make decisions and I am regaining control of my own life• self-esteem and self-worth• feeling of being a part of something and being involved in a supportive community• power of having my ideas matter• I can change communal and social structures

OBJECTIVES OF LEFSA:

To provide a time and space on a weekly basis where people who are homeless can come together to share their lived experiences in the light of God’s word.

Page 19: Everyone is a leader

TEAM MEMBERS are in the shelter not to do for, but to accompany, encourage, challenge, and befriend persons as they take control over their own lives.

Page 20: Everyone is a leader
Page 21: Everyone is a leader

TEAM MEMBERS focus not at having “meetings” but at building an atmosphere where “communion” takes place, where we can together look at how to continue the mission of Jesus and commit ourselves to transformation.

Page 22: Everyone is a leader

TEAM MEMBERS are to be not as teachers with the truth to give but as people of faith with one’s truth to share along with other believers.

"I had some heavy burdens and God picked them up during this retreat, I experienced freedom".

"We all have such a similar life experience, we are called to make a difference, there is such a power and strength coming out of each woman here“.

Systemic Change in works among those living in poverty aims beyond providing food, clothing and shelter to alleviate immediate needs and enables people themselves to engage in the identification of the root causes of their poverty and to create strategies to change those structures which keep them in poverty. This also requires changing attitudes that have caused the problem.
