The college has been ranked consistently in the top ten law

colleges of India.

Established in 1924, ILS Law College has been imparting

quality legal education to students from all parts of India and

some from abroad as well. The campus encompassing a large

sports fields, a hill spread across 195 acres, spacious buildings

and classrooms, a large library, hostels, and sports facilities with

swimming pool and gymnasium has provided the perfect

environment for the all-round development of its students.

Courses offered

ILS Law College is affiliated to the University of Pune. The

course structure is prescribed by the University, and its LL.B.

degree courses fulfill the requirements prescribed by the Bar

Council of India for enrolment as Advocates. The college offers

the following courses of the University of Pune:

uL.L.B. degree course (three years)

uB.A. L.L.B. degree course (five years)

uD.T.L., (Diploma in Taxation Laws), a part-time diploma

course (one year).

Additional Channels of Learning

A large number of our students study law-subjects of

contemporary relevance in the various diploma courses offered

by the Indian Law Society. These supplement the curriculum

prescribed by the University, and equip them with skills

Excellent academic performance

The students of ILS have consistently performed well in the

Pune University Examinations. In the last academic year, they

have achieved all the first positions on the merit list.

Library

The college is equipped with one of the best law libraries in the country with a collection of more than 50000 Indian and foreign books. It subscribes to 86 Indian and 12 foreign journals. Students use it not only for curricular references, but also for all research and co-curricular activities. The library is equipped with computers and student can access the data bases.

Moot Courts

Sir Lawrence Jenkins, then Chief Justice of Bombay High Court, inaugurated the first moot court in 1939. Moot courts have since then grown to become a permanent activity involving enthusiastic participation from students from all classes. The annual intra collegiate moot court competition attracts around 400 participants. The students who perform well in this competition represent the College in inter-collegiate and inter-university competitions in India and abroad.

Moot Court competitions require students to research extensively in the library. This enables development of essential advocacy skills, as also study and analysis of facts and construction of arguments. The requirement of memorial submissions also ensures that students improve their drafting and language skills.

ILS teams have represented India at the prestigious rounds of the Philip C Jessup and Stetson International Moot Court Competitions held at Washington D.C. and Florida respectively. The teams have consistently done well at all the National Moot Courts as well.

Legal Writing

The College has continuously emphasized the importance of writing activity and promoted legal scholarship. Students have the opportunity to participate regularly in essay writing, case comment and judgement writing competitions. Several of the prize-winning entries have been published in reputed magazines and law journals.

Legal Aid activities

Our Legal Aid Centre started in 1976 and is recognised as a Free Legal Aid Centre under the Legal Aid Scheme of the State of Maharashtra. At the Centre, students are exposed to cases for advice and follow-up in courts. Under the literacy programme, they organise and participate in literacy camps at Pune and the

ILS LAW COLLEGE, PUNEILS LAW COLLEGE, PUNEvillages surrounding Pune. Students also direct, write and perform street plays, display posters, prepare literacy material and talk to school children about various aspects of law.

The students filed a public interest litigation in the Bombay High Court on behalf of the Centre for effective implementation by the government of the 'Persons with Disabilities (Equal Opportunity, Protection of Rights and Full Participation) Act 1995'. A student argued the matter for interim reliefs, after which the transport undertakings made vehicles accessible to the disabled; the local authority changed building regulations; the State Government constituted Committees to recommend how transport and buildings become accessible to the disabled. The State Government has also constituted a State-level Co-ordination Committee to recommend policies for the disabled.

Annual magazine

The annual magazine is a forum for students to pen their opinions on various political, legal and social issues. In line with its democratic set-up, the college encourages the students to control the management and content of the magazine.

Extra-curricular Activities

Culture and entertainment have always been an integral part of the student experience at ILS. The students have an outstanding record of participation and wins in the prestigious Purushottam Karandak Marathi Drama Competition. ILS also boasts of several athletes and sportsmen who have excelled at the District, State and National levels in Swimming, Volleyball, Cricket, Football and Badminton.

The Faculty

Our teaching faculty consists of fifteen full-time teachers and 44 other teachers from legal and other professions, most of whom are the alumni of the college. The latter specially bring the benefit of their practical experience to the classroom. The faculty contributes to legal scholarship by authoring well-received books and prominent contributions in journals. They

regularly participate in seminars and are routinely invited to conduct training programmes in various institutions and in the industry.

We encourage students to participate in academic activities. Students are given an opportunity to make presentations, discuss cases, argue and debate during classes. As panelists they judge and assess presentations in the autonomous diploma courses. Senior students guide juniors with research techniques and methods. They hold discussion groups and always throng the guest lectures of eminent persons invited to ILS. The students are given an opportunity to present papers at the national level seminars organized by the college

Freedom and Choice

Students at ILS enjoy freedom in every aspect of their education. After lectures, they are free to pursue activities of their choice. They value this freedom. They also have the freedom to express their ideas. During the Annual Gathering, the College hosts a week long intra-collegiate cultural fest where the students participate in theatre, music, sports and the fine arts.

Students coordinate and organise mega-events like the annual social gathering, Sathe Foundation activities and every other activity the college undertakes. Some students assist teachers in conducting autonomous Diploma Courses.
