High Holy Days Guide

Summer 2017/5777

Dear Friends:

We hope this letter finds you doing well, staying cool and taking some time to create wonderful summer

memories with friends and family.

Every summer, we work closely as a synagogue staff toward creating meaningful, warm and inclusive High

Holy Day Services for our congregation. We are so very grateful to each one of our members for the loyalty

and generosity in the voluntary Tzedakah of belonging to a synagogue.

Within these pages you will find information regarding several important aspects of the High Holy Day

schedules, honors, childcare and many other details – all in one place! You may notice that we have

increased the cost for non member/guest High Holy Day “tickets” as a response to doing what is fair to our

current members, who graciously and generously provide an annual Membership Contribution year after year.

Those who choose not to affiliate with CBI should contribute a fairer share for the Days of Awe. While we

always want to practice Hachnasat Orchim, “welcoming the visitor/guest” as a core Jewish value, we can no

longer do so at the great expense toward our current members. Of course, members from other Reform

Congregations throughout North America will be given reciprocity for their tickets.

What is of primary importance for our congregation is that we take this very sacred time to reflect, both

inwardly and universally at how we respond to the ever changing nature of the world around us. As we

prepare for the Days of Awe we hope you will join us in contemplating how we can make a positive and

constructive difference for the good of the Jewish People, our country and our world and mostly, what we as a

congregation can do actively and collectively to bring goodness, justice and peace to ourselves, our

community and our world.

L’Shalom,

Rabbi Stephen Kahn Ian Schulder, Executive Director

2017/5778 MEMORIAL BOOK We continue our tradition of publishing a MEMORIAL BOOK to accompany

the Yizkor Memorial Service on Yom Kippur day. This beautiful and dignified

way of honoring the memory of our departed is combined with the mitzvah

of reciting the Yizkor prayers and the mitzvah of giving tzedakah. This book

gives us the opportunity to express our affection and respect for our loved

ones and share their blessed memory with our congregation. Please return

your request form below to the Temple office by August 4th.

opportunity for our youngest members will be at 8:30 at Chaparral Christian

Church in a designated room (look for the signs). Parents may reserve

babysitting following this Tot Yontif Service and join the Early Service in the main

sanctuary following.

GREETERS Once again we are requesting volunteers to welcome our guests for the High

Holy Day services with a warm, friendly, “Shanah Tovah”, “Chag Samaech” or

“G’mar Chatimah Tovah”. Please join us a half hour prior to the start of the

service to assist congregants as they enter the foyer. Greeters will be available

to distribute prayerbooks, provide directions and help with seating. We hope

you will join our staff as we greet the new year together. Please contact the

Temple office or [email protected].

Valley. Grocery bags with the list of essential items will be distributed at the Rosh

Hashanah services. Please take two, three or as many bags as possible so that
