WESTERN REGIONAL CONFERENCE ON PROBLEM GAMBLING AWARENESS

FOCUS ON THE FUTURE

2

ABOUT THE CONFERENCEDear Prospective Conference Attendee: Focus on the Future is the largest and longest-standing conference on problem gambling awareness in the Pacific Northwest. Launched in 2007, Focus on the Future brings together an incredible mixture of compelling speakers – experts from across the country and around the world – and opportunities to network and learn from colleagues in the field. It is a place where you can exchange your ideas, experiences and knowledge to become a collective voice in raising awareness and developing programs and services that have the greatest positive impact. Problem gambling affects every community in our region and can cripple the lives not only of problem gamblers themselves, but of their families and friends as well.

This conference will provide valuable insights on the tools and resources available for effective treatment, prevention, and community engagement, as well as offering information on trends and innovative topics in gambling and gaming that affect your work. By joining us in Portland, you will get a prime opportunity to collaborate with and learn from some of the best in the field. You’ll no doubt leave with some new connections and partnerships that may lead to enhanced and innovative approaches toward assisting those who are affected by problem gambling.

Thank you, to all of you who make such an important difference for those in our region who need support and services. Thank you and congratulations to the Evergreen Council on Problem Gambling, celebrating an impressive 25 years of service, and to the Oregon Council on Problem Gambling, marking its 10th anniversary this year. You have much to commemorate as you come together as partners again this year, and much to look forward to as you Focus on the Future and all you can accomplish working together.

Sincerely,

Brad Owen Washington State Lieutenant GovernorHonorary Chair

April 26–29, 2016

Voices of Recovery

Celebrating successes and sharing recovery stories is an important way for the recovery community to help broaden awareness and educate others about addiction, treatment, and the journey that is recovery. The courage to share these stories is, we hope, matched by the positive impact they make on all of us who work in the fields of problem gambling treatment, prevention, training, and support.

FRIDAY, APRIL 29Morning Keynote

Good Morning, Portland!

Join a panel of regional, national, and international experts in the field as we explore emerging issues, attitudes, and trends that are shaping our work around gambling and gaming treatment, prevention, awareness, and legislation, such as: State of the Nation in gambling; international trends and topics; working with the recovery community; fantasy sports legalization, regulation, and our roles, and more.

Morning Breakout Sessions

• Hilarie Cash, PhD: Mark Griffiths, PhD Addictions on (and to) the Internet: The Case of Social Gaming

• Jerry Bauerkemper, BS, CDGC Effects of Advertising on Gambling Clients in Treatment: A Focus Group Study

Lunch Plenary

Fantasy Sports – From Simple to Serious: What’s Our Role?

Are Fantasy Sports games a simple social sideline or a complicated scenario of statistical minutiae? What was once seen as a quiet little community game has branched off to become a booming billion dollar business. How do we separate the facts from the fantasy about an issue that continues to grow in popularity and contention? When do Fantasy Sports become a potential addictive preoccupation rather than a predominantly benign pastime? What’s our role in prevention, consumer protection, regulation, and helping those with problems?

Afternoon Plenary

Mandy Davis, PhD, MSW, LCSW, BSSW Trauma Informed Care 101

To understand the benefits of a trauma informed system it is necessary to understand how trauma impacts individuals and families. Participants will learn about trauma informed care, the impact of trauma and how trauma affects how people engage in services. Participants will begin to identify how service systems, often unknowingly, retraumatize survivors of complex trauma; and the difference between trauma specific services and trauma informed care.
