Not only are we past the holidays – January has past as well! We hope that all of you had a safe and healthy holiday and you have removed all your holi-day decorations. BUT, I am leaving my “I Believe” Santa flag outside for as long it goes unnoticed. Tire Rack Street Survival Teen Driving Program: We had the first TRSS school for 2018 at the Treasure Coast Public Safety Training Center at Indian River State College in Ft. Pierce. This was a “demo” school to demonstrate to the TCPSTC- faculty that we ‘CAN DO THIS” and We did – now they know “we got this!” Skip Hudson went beyond the call of: “Where is a suitable venue?” He has a few connections that got him in the door – where so many had tried before. Thank you Skip, for finding the venue and making it happen. We had thirteen wonderful students. And a mixture of vehicles that we hadn’t had with our past events. The skid-pad area at TCPSTC was challenging for us. It was narrower than we are used to, so we had to get creative with our exercise layouts. We had many challenges and went beyond all of them. We have a great TRSS Team. Mark Forbes is our Chief Instructor and apparently, I can add “creative designer” to his title. Bill Wade, TRSS National Program Director, attended our event as our Classroom Instructor, assisted by Rennie Bryant. I am sure Bill, REALLY enjoyed our warmer tempera-tures then his 14 degrees in Kentucky. Yes, the weather was great. Along with Rennie and Bill in the classroom, we had Bob Sharp and Skip observing (and doing other things). I, once again, say THANK YOU to our TRSS Team: our in-car coaches and our staff. All of us are volunteers, and all are hard working. At times I wonder who has the most fun US or the stu-dents? Saving lives one student at a time! Membership: Everglades Chapter has 1375 members with 200 of them Associates. Membership Drive for 2018. This is our club--your club! Let's grow it...not accidentally, but actively-- all year. The obvious reward will be more activities, more cars, ore friends, and more fun. But we'll reward you with more than that! Every month, every quarter and throughout the year, members can win great prizes for referring new members to the club! Each month, the member with the most referrals will receive a free one-year BMW CCA membership renewal! Each quarter, we will have a first, second and third place winner! To be eligible for the quarterly prizes, members just refer six for that quarter. Third place is $25 of merchandise in the BMW CCA store. Second place is $50 of merchandise in the BMW CCA store. Each of those recipients will also still receive their $5 in BMW CCA bucks for each referral to add to those prizes. Late model BMW cars have notorious battery issues, due to the number of systems that use power even when the car is turned off. My own 6 series runs cooling fans at least 20 minutes after shutdown to preserve the tur-bos. Originally specced with a 95 amp battery, the newer models all get 105 amp versions. A few months back I started getting battery warnings, which I alternatively ignored, or if going away, left the M6 on the trickle charger. I debated self-install of a new battery, but also knew that a new battery had to be coded (to tell the car about the installation and to prevent overcharging).

Carly, which I have used and tout-ed as a very good obd-2 app allows for battery coding for a 10£ up-charge. However, my last coding attempt (adding turn signals to my head-up display) failed with several error codes (removed because I back up before each new code), so I was hesitant to try this approach. As I dithered and trickle charged, an answer came in the form of a check engine light. Carly confirmed an engine issue, and since the car

was going in for warranty work, I decided to let the dealer install the new battery. The engine issue was a leak-ing valve cover gasket, which was replaced at no charge. The battery was on me, and costs $472 out the door, which included a new 105 amp oem battery and one hour to code to the car. My eye candy website of the month is www.enthusiastauto.com. Al they do is sell high performance BMWs from all ages. The cars are generally in excellent condition and they also carry very high price tags. However, if you want to see what a like new 40 year old BMW looks like, this is the place.

Our Annual Holiday Party Charity Event was held December 15 at the Lake Biwa pavilion Morikami Park. We had a fantastic turn out of close to 90 attendees. And we announced our Member of the YEAR: Rennie Bryant. IF you weren’t there you missed that too. The lunch was catered by Sonny’s BBQ. Door prizes were donat-ed by Everglades Chapter, BMW CCA National office and the BMW CCA Foundation. Perfect Day Perfect Party. Our 50/50 cash raffle went to member: David Schnoerr and he graciously donated most of it back to the Foundation. Thank you, David, and thank you all that participated in the 50/50 and the raf-fle item drawing. NEXT BIG Event: Our Annual Chillin’ N Grillin’ picnic – the spring event. The next BMW display at the Foundation museum will be the ICON 2002! They have already selected which members cars will be on display at the museum. It will open with the big event, The Vintage on May 18. Watch for tickets sales and they sell out fast! Not sure how many months The ICON 2002 will be displayed at the museum. But if you miss the opening weekend event, there will be plenty of other opportunities to visit the museum. Bucket List Item # ??? At this time, I would like to thank our officers for devoting their time and energy to help make this a better chapter. Can we do better? – of course we can. BUT we need more of our members helping to accomplish that. We need more members to say, “I can do that” or “I can HELP with that”, and actually do something. You don’t have to be an officer to get things done. With that said, we welcome your feedback, your enthusiasm and your dedication to the chapter and to BMW CCA. FLasher Contest With the Support of Bavarian Auto, a fine purveyor of BMW parts and accessories, we are having a contest. We are giving away three Gift Certificates, two valued at $25.00 and one valued at $50.00. Winning is easy and fun, simply be the first three Everglades Members to submit a letter or article ex-plaining either: (i) why they joined the BMW CCA; (ii) why the stay a member of BMW CCA; or (iii) their likes and dislikes about their current BMW.
