One of the town’s less-visited “green” attractions, Tiddenfoot Waterside Park lies at the southern end of Mentmore Road just beyond Cedars Upper School. This former sand quarry has been reclaimed by nature as wild plants and animals have been encouraged to reoccupy the land. The park oers a place for people and wildlife, open to anyone for walking or cycling on its surfaced paths.mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm Many residents and visitors know the park as the venue of the annual Linslade Canal Festival in July, but there are a growing number of regular users who appreciate the stunning vista across the lake, the gentle gradients of the pathways (mostly

accessible to wheelchairs) and the low-impact play and exercise equipment.mmmmmmmmmmmAn enthusiastic group of volunteers, the Friends of Tiddenfoot Waterside Park, works with Central Bedfordshire Council (the park’s owners) and the Greensand Trust to

ensure the park’s development maintains, improves and creates wildlife habitats within it. There is a continuing programme of conservation activities including hedgelaying, an ancient craft that tidies up overgrown borders and encourages new growth as part of the “Foragers’ Way” project at Tiddenfoot to promote the spread of fruit-bearing vegetation for visitors to exploit.mmmmmmmmmmmmmmWildlife at the park includes waterfowl such as swans, coots, grebes and moorhens, and animals such as fox, rabbit, badger, mink and occasionally Muntjac deer. The Friends recently installed a small number of bat and bird boxes donated by some of the park’s supporters. There is also a good stock of sh in the lake (shing is restricted to members of the Leighton Buzzard Angling Club).mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmThe Friends hold bi-monthly meetings, publish a newsletter twice a year and run a well-visited website with lots of information about the park – www.tiddenfoot.org.uk. You can also sign up for email updates. So it’s easy to stay in touch with what’s going on at the park and get the most out of this lesser-known local natural venue. Why not come along and nd out for yourself?mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

In 2004 the Royal British Legion began to move away from the 'xed' groups where a town would have its own RBL club. Alas many of these clubs had an aging population and the younger ex-members of the armed forces were not attracted to them. Initially the RBL opened its door to anyone who was interested in their very important work, but then a group in Cheltenham decided to start a new group. Many serving and ex-servicemen are motorcycle enthusiasts and motorcyclists are famous for supporting charities. They approached the ruling body of the Legion with their idea and some old dinosaurs turned the idea down at. Then someone remembered that in the 1920s a 'Riders Branch' had existed, so there was no need to start up a new one, just resurrect the old one. The new RBL branch was to be called, "The Royal British Legion Riders Branch" and it is now by far the largest branch in the Legion, with 5,760 members countrywide. It single aim is to support The Poppy Appeal to raise funds so that the Legion can carry out its core task of supporting ex-servicemen who need help.mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmBedfordshire has its own 'branch' which has about 50 members. We carry out our own Poppy Appeal collections and assist the RBL clubs when they ask for our help. m

The Club welcomes any one who is interested (or would like to take up a new interest) in the game to come and join them. Currently their youngest member is 15 years old and they would welcome new members of any age to contact them. During the summer months (May-Sept) the Club plays at their green in Mentmore Road but during the winter they hold short mat bowls every Thursday at their pavilion and members can go along to indoor sessions both at Dunstable and Bletchley. The Club also has an active social diary with regular Bingo, race nights and Whist drives. On the 5th November every year, children in Britain get excited because it is Bonre Night (Guy Fawkes' Night). We light bonres and enjoy reworks displays. On top of the re is a guy (a homemade model of a man, like a scarecrow). The Guy is made out of old clothes stued with paper or straw. The Guy is a reminder of Guy Fawkes and the reworks are a reminder of the gunpowder Guy Fawkes hid in the cellar of Parliament.

We do these things because we're remembering that four hundred years ago, in 1605, Guy Fawkes and a group of plotters attempted to blow up the Houses of Parliament in London with barrels of gunpowder placed in the basement. They wanted to kill King James I and the king’s leaders.MmmmmmmmmmMMMMMMMMMMM

When Queen Elizabeth I took the throne of England she made some laws against the Roman Catholics. Guy Fawkes was one of a small group of Catholics who felt that the government was treating Roman Catholics unfairly. They hoped that King James I would change the laws, but he didn't. Catholics had to practise their religion in secret. There were even nes for people who didn't attend the Protestant church on Sunday or on holy days. James I passed more laws against the Catholics when he became king.mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

A group of men led by Robert Catesby, plotted to kill King James I and blow up the Houses of Parliament, the place where the laws that governed England were made. The plot was simple - the next time Parliament was opened by King James l, they would blow up everyone there with gunpowder. The men bought a house next door to the parliament building. The house had a cellar which went under the parliament building. They

planned to put gunpowder under the house and blow up parliament and the king.mmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Guy Fawkes was given the job to keep watch over the barrels of gunpowder and to light the fuse. On the morning of 5th November, soldiers discovered Guy hidden in the cellar and arrested him. The trail of gunpowder at his feet would never be lit. Guy Fawkes was

taken to the Tower of London where he was tortured and questioned about the other plotters. In celebration of his survival, King James I ordered that the people of England should have a great bonre on the night on 5th November.

“Remember, remember, the fth of November, Gunpowder, treason and plot.We see no reason whyGunpowder treasonShould ever be forgot!"

Seasonal Canine Illness (SCI) is associated with animals which have been walked in wooded areas or parkland in the autumn months. There is now new evidence to suggest that SCI could be caused by Harvest Mites.mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm It is recommended you check your dog after walks at this time of year. Frontline spray is the best treatment to kill these mites. The rst active stage in the life cycle of the harvest mite is the six-legged larva - this is the only stage which attacks dogs and cats. These larvae can be found in large groups on small clods of earth, long grass, matted vegetation and even on low bushes and plants. They are active during the day, especially when it is dry and sunny. When they come into contact with any warm blooded animal they swarm on and congregate in areas where there is little hair and the skin is quite thin. The larvae can be recognized as clusters of small red-orange coloured “dust” attached to hairs on the body, often between the toes or on the dogs tummy.mmmmmmmmmmmmmPlease get your dog checked out by a veterinary surgeon if you are at all worried.mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmSeasonal Canine Illness is characterised by lethargy, vomiting and rapid unconsciousness. Symptoms include vomiting, diarrhoea and abdominal pain often starts 24-72 hours after walking in woodland. No evidence for being contagious. Majority of cases occur in September and October. Overall 10% mortality rate but this is dropping (Source: Animal Health Trust).

Daisy, a dog from Leighton Buzzard, unfortunately presented with these symptoms 24 hours after walking in a local woodland area. Her owner is very keen to share her story and make other local dog owners aware as quick intervention can make all the dierence in the dogs recovery.mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm “Daisy was admitted to our local vet with similar symptoms to SCI. Initial blood tests came back normal but vet says they have found an unusual amount of Harvest Mites on her. She's been put on a drip as she is so dehydrated. They are going to treat her with Front line. Please watch out as she has been so poorly over last 24hrs and we really thought she might not pull through this. It was heart breaking to go and see her at the vets, she was very weak and she could hardly stand up ... she just managed to wag her hairless tail.” mmmmmmmm“I would never have thought it would aect my dog but she is now very poorly in the vets and was found to have mites on her”.We are pleased to say that at the time of going to press Daisy is back home and is showing signs of improvement and responding to treatment. We wish her a speedy recovery.mmmm

The headteacher, Mr Harrington-Williams believes that the students are the heart of the school and he makes sure that he is involved in every day school life and operates an open door policy to both students and parents. The school rst opened its doors as a Secondary School back in 1959, before becoming a middle school when the county changed to the three tier system in 1978. Brooklands gained academy status in November 2011 and is going from strength to strength. The school has excellent facilities, including a large separate sports hall and substantial art, music and food technology rooms.

What is clear is that the children enjoy going to school here. They enjoy their lessons and have a great respect for the sta and each other. But don’t take our word for it – please attend our open evening or one of our open days. If however you are not free on these dates then please do not hesitate to telephone the school and arrange an alternative time to visit that suits you. We look forward to welcoming you soon.

BIGGEST BUSINESS NETWORKING EVENT A SUCCESSHundreds of business people gathered at Cedars School back in September for the LB Connect Business Fair. With 64 stands representing a large and diverse selection of local businesses, visitors ocked to see the skills and expertise on oer and to take the opportunity to network. “We came to meet the business people of Leighton Buzzard – and we did so beyond all of our expectations”,says Tony Drury, the author on the City Fiction table. “A great event. Thank you LB Connect.”The event proved benecial to job seekers and employers too. “I thought the event had a very positive vibe and I for one thoroughly enjoyed my time there,” said Steve Perry from Jobcentre Plus. “This was our third Business fair and by far the busiest and buzziest,” said Bob Chandler, chair of the organisers, LB Connect, the town’s most active business networking group. Five volunteers from the Leighton Buzzard-based children’s charity Kids Out were on hand to help with car parking and orientation and more than a hundred exhibitors and visitors purchased their pink panther cuddly toys, raising £200. Kids Out is LB Connect’s supported charity for 2013 and prots from the event will be donated to the organisation later this year.Businesses represented covered a wide range of industries. Special guests included Andrew Selous MP and representatives from the town council, Central Beds Authority, Bedfordshire Chamber of Commerce and the Federation of Small Businesses.Prot from the Fair is being donated to Kids Out, the Leighton Buzzard-based charity that provides breaks for underprivileged children across the region.LB Connect is a not for prot organisation that links businesses through regular meetings, networking, sharingbest practices, talks by guest speakers, creating business development opportunities and promoting social events.Lead sponsor for the event was Osborne Morris and Morgan (OMM) and other sponsors included Clark Howes and Reisswolf.Full details of the event and LB Connect membership details can be found on the website: www.lbconnect.co.uk/business-fair

Two local residents are instrumental in the running of voluntary wildlife organisation the Hare Preservation Trust (HPT) which campaigns exclusively for the welfare of our iconic brown and mountain hares, both species now vulnerable as far as their long term survival is concerned. In 2011 a zoology report for the Eden TV natural history channel listed the brown hare as one of our species most at risk of extinction by the year 2050.mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmJohn, from Linslade, with a background in both rabbits and hares, is HPT's Technical Liaison Ocer, whilst Jo, from Leighton, is the Website Response Secretary and also Editor of the monthly news Bulletin which goes out to the HPT's email and postal members.mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmOur brown hare population has declined by over 80 per cent since 1880 and mountain hares (found mainly in the Scottish Highlands but also in and around Derbyshire Peak District and across into north Wales) by around 50 per cent in recent decades. Although there are now shooting close seasons in Scotland for both brown and mountain hares it is very regrettable that the Westminster government refused to introduce such a measure for hares in England, despite a campaign earlier in 2013 by HPT and its coalition partners from other wildlife organisations. Nearly 400,000 brown hares are usually shot annually in England, many for no good reason at all, despite DEFRA at the same time still trying to increase their numbers by oering nancial incentives to farmers to create habitats friendly to wildlife, including hares. The shooting of lactating female hares leaves many thousands of orphaned leverets to die of starvation. Leverets are also at high risk of predation by foxes, stoats, corvids and birds of prey such as buzzards. Unlike rabbits, hares live entirely above ground and do not have the security of b u r r o w s . M M M M M M M M M M M M M M M M M M M M M M M M MDespite being outlawed by the 2004 Hunting With Dogs Act, both hare hunting (on foot or horseback with a dog pack) and hare coursing (using two fast dogs) still continue illegally, police forces in many areas continually trying to combat coursing on farmland. The BBC TV Wildlife Revival series featured brown hares prominently in its Farmland programme in September. HPT contributed to the making of that episode, in particular by providing the lady who was lmed with the leveret she had been hand rearing. The HPT's website at www.hare-preservation-trust.co.uk includes an educationaL feature on hand rearing orphaned or abandoned leverets. Anyone nding a leveret hiding in the countryside should not automatically

rst assume that it has been abandoned, as the mother only returns once daily at dusk to feed her ospring, who disperse individually away from the birth site in order to provide less of a collective target for predators. Leverets are born with open eyes, fully furred and are weaned after three to four weeks. The 18th century poet William Cowper from Olney kept three house hares and the HPT is aware of people today who have them as adult house pets after initially hand rearing them as young leverets. Hares, together with rabbits and foreign pikas, make up the unique lagomorph order of mammals, diering from rodents because of ..extra set of incisor teeth.mmmmmm

The HPT welcomes enquiries and information from the public via its website (click on "contact us") or by direct email at [email protected] Alternatively by post at HPT, PO Box 447, Bridgwater, TA6 9GA

The hut in question was nanced through a £250 grant from Leighton-Linslade Town Council at the Alwins Fields Allotment Site in Linslade. It forms part of a small community area which has been created out of overgrown rough land with some hard work over previous months by a small group of dedicated volunteers, to provide a pleasant, landscaped seating area for the many allotment holders to meet and socialise. These eorts have already been recognised by the project being included in this year’s Leighton-Linslade entry in Anglia in Bloom as a neighbourhood scheme.mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Mayors often get invited to open prestigious buildings. Rather more unusual is a garden hut! However, one Sunday early September, Leighton Linslade’s Town Mayor, Councillor Amanda Dudwell, cut the ribbon to open “Alwins Hut”.mmmmmmmmmm

So, perhaps after all, it wasn’t such a great surprise to see the Mayor cutting the ribbon. Over 50 allotment holders and friends attended the event with copious refreshments and a barbeque following. Even the sun managed an appearance!mmmmmmmmmmmm

On Saturday 14th September Appledown Rescue and Rehoming Kennels held an Open Day with a fun dog show and our young junior newshound Cayleigh went along with her new dog ‘Chantelle’. Here is her report on the afternoon.mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

“I have not had my Chihuahua, Chantelle, for long but we decided to take her along to the Appledown Open Day so she could meet some other dogs and I could enter her into the Fun Dog Show. We turned up at Appledown Kennels where we found the tent were we could register Chantelle into some friendly competitions. We entered her into the ‘Best Condition’, ‘Prettiest Bitch’ and ‘Young Handler’ classes. I was thrilled when Chantelle came 1st in the Best Condition and won a rosette, a bag of treats and a tennis ball. A bit later on we had the Prettiest Bitch competition, unfortunately she did not get placed in that but there were a lot of dogs entered into that one. We watched a few dierent competitions because we did not enter her into those ones. Then there was the ‘Young Handler’ competition I went in with Chantelle and we had been talking to some people standing next to us and they had a rescue dog from Appledown called Harvey and they let my sister Caitlin enter him. Unfortunately Caitlin and Harvey did not get placed but I came 3rd with Chantelle and was very pleased. We got another rosette and goodie bag of treats. There were stalls to look at and Chantelle won a teddy on the tombola – there was also homemade cake for sale and a BBQ, it’s just a pity the weather was not a little bit warmer. I want to thank Appledown Rehoming Kennels for a brilliant day and I will denitely be coming again next year.”mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Local photographer, Bridget Davey, of Bridget Davey Photography was taking photographs on the day and captured these lovely ones of Cayleigh and Chantelle.mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

At Appledown Rescue and Rehoming Kennels they have many dogs waiting for a second chance of happiness. Dogs come in who have been abandoned or whose owners can no longer keep them for a variety of reasons. They care for them until they nd the loving new home they deserve. If you feel you can oer a dog a secure home please call in and see them. You don’t have to be super human to be a super hero!During a whole blood donation just under a pint (about 470mls) of blood is taken, which works out at no more than 13 per cent of your blood volume. After donation, your body has an amazing capacity to replace all the cells and uids that have been lost. Your body makes about two million new red cells every second, so it doesn’t take long to build up stores of them again. What about your white cells and platelets? A number of other messenger proteins also stimulate the production of these cells in the bone marrow, and over the next few days levels return to normal.

Blood is something we all expect to be there for us when we need it, yet only 4% of us give blood. Many people would not be alive today if it wasn't for the generosity of blood donors.

Anyone aged between 17-65, weighing more than 50 kg (7 stone 12lbs) and in general good health could potentially start saving lives by becoming a blood donor.

The next donor sessions in our area are as follows:

‘A Flash of Lightning’ is based on the Great Train Robbery which took place just outside Leighton Buzzard. One of the most infamous robberies of all time the 1963’s Great Train Robbery involved the hijack of a London-bound train, and the theft of millions of pounds. Tony wanted to write this novel to coincide with the 50th anniversary of this historic local event.mmmmm A sum of money has been gifted to the LBNGR from funds raised from book sales over the weekend.mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

It’s time to put on your dancing shoes, even if you can’t dance, as Leighton Buzzard is about to go Strictly mad with the addition of FitSteps®! If you want to get t, lose those unwanted pounds and have more fun than you can imagine, go along to your local Rosemary Conley class. Rosemary Conley instructor, Maria Burnell, who has been personally trained by Strictly stars Ian Waite and Natalie Lowe, is very excited that she will be among the rst FitSteps® instructors to embrace this new tness phenomenon, which has recentley been rolled out across Rosemary Conley classes nationwide. Natalie and Ian have combined the best known and most popular Latin and Ballroom dances to develop a dance tness programme that delivers results fast. When combined with Rosemary Conley’s 40 years’ experience of getting the nation to slim down and shape up, the results are amazing!mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm Rosemary Conley Diet & Fitness Clubs are thrilled to have teamed up with the creators of FitSteps® to oer this exciting new tness concept and expect it will be extremely popular with their members as it allows them to learn easy-to-follow dance moves that have been combined with proven tness techniques.mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.Says Rosemary Conley CBE: “We like to stay one step ahead of the latest tness sensation by introducing new styles of exercise into our classes.
