someone whose thirty ve year passion fordesigning beautiful interiors remains undiminished.

“At school I had this inability to string more than ten words together to compose a

composition, some subjects at school I was average and others I loved.

Over the years after I left Boarding School and joined the Royal Navy things just did not seem to get any better and then I was in civvy street and having to work for my living, it was then I managed to get into a business I enjoyed. Inspection and I eventually, surprise, surprise took my examination to become and Industrial Radiologist and even more surprise I passed ‘cum  laude’ now that was more of a shock than a surprise, I went on to lecture on Radiology for five years and managed to start to string more and more words together, and found I enjoyed writing and managed to write over 50 articles for Journals of Societies and Institutions of which I was a member.

Living in South Africa for about 23 years I was nearing the dreaded moment of retirement, and realised I would have to do something to pass the time and to keep the ‘Leetle Grey Cell’s’ working, so I began by writing some very short

stories which eventually became longer as I continued to write, at last I managed a children’s story inspired on my family’s life of living in Bletchley Park, where there was a lake with an Island, so the titles of the books became ‘Island of Secrets 1, 2, 3 and 4. The children whose parents work at Bletchley Park are evacuated from London during WWII and living with their Grand Parents near a lake with an Island, which just happened to have a Time Machine hidden in a cave.

The children have Projects from school and in Book 1 they go to see what happened at Agincourt, book 2 is the Armada, book 3 into the future to the year 2080 and Dunkirk and at the moment I am in the process of book 4 which is about Black Beard the Pirate and once more into the future to the year 2080 where they try to find the family of a young girl, who got trapped in the year 2011 and they rescued her and now she lives with them.”

Zen Update

Zen, our Dogs for the Disabled pup, is now 6 months old and still growing. He has lost all his puppy teeth and now has a good set of adult teeth!!

He has visited Pulfords School and was warmly welcomed by staff and children alike. Not one child was afraid of him and he got lots of cuddles.

We had a very successful stall at the May Day doing a soft toy tombola. Zen again received cuddles from lots of children and

we were able to answer lots of questions about the charity. Zen was not bothered by the explosions from the stunt show but was himself a little noisy at times!!!!

We have given two talks this month one to the Riverside WI and the other to Stanbridge and Tillsworth Cubs. Zen behaved well on both occasions.

His last visit was to Petersfield Hospital in Hampshire where he was a big hit with both staff and patients alike.

He performed well in the ring during the Dogs for the Disabled d e m o n s t r a t i o n at the Stoneleigh Fun Day.

If you have not met Zen yet look out for our stall at the carnival.

Linslade was a small village that had migrated from its original location nearer Heath and Reach, to arise around the ‘Leighton Buzzard’ railway station in the mid 19th Century, and become a Victorian railway town. The area between the canal and the river Lovat (now called the Ousel) was an industrial area because of the access to the canal for easy transportation of goods. One company situated there was Morgan & Co., who built wagons, carriages and bespoke car bodies. Their expertise with wooden construction caused them to become involved in The Great War 1914-18 in building one of the first proper ‘bombers’ for our armed forces.

When the First World War (WW1) began in 1914, the technology of the aircraft was very, very crude indeed. The Wright brothers in the USA had only just conquered the problem of ‘lift’ in the USA. But there is nothing like a war to accelerate and improve technology. At first aircraft were just used as ‘spotters’ for the artillery and enemy troop positions. By 1917 the crude aircraft had advanced in

huge strides and could now fly for many hours and carry huge loads. This led to the development of the ‘bomber’. The Vickers Aeroplane Company who originated from Erith in Kent were tasked with building a twin-engined bomber (one of the first) capable of reaching Berlin.

Rex Pierson designed the Vickers Vimy at Brooklands Vicker’s factory, Weybridge, and set about getting it built. An original order of 1,130 was made by the War Department and by then production had been farmed out to over seventeen different locations. This was because the small factory at Brooklands simply could not cope. These were mostly small carpentry firms or coach-builders as the construction was originally of wood covered in fabric. One of these was the coach building firm of Morgan and Co. of Linslade. Their factory was situated by the side of the canal where the Tesco supermarket now is. Morgans built just 40 of these huge bi-planes (two wings, one mounted above the other). Various engines were fitted, from Fiat A12; Sunbeam Maoris; Hispano Suizas; but

those made in Linslade had Rolls Royce Eagle Mk8s. The completed aircraft’s fuselage were transported on horse and carts, with the wings following on another cart, to Scotts Field by Townland Farm just south of Pages Park on Billington Road. Today this is the Sandhills Estate. They were assembled on this field and then flown off for delivery to the RAF.

The RAF was not formed until 1918 at the end of WW1. The reason that the Vickers Vimy went to the RAF and not the Royal Flying Corps was simply because the aircraft was too late for the war. It never flew on any WW1 sorties in anger. The order of 1,130 was mostly cancelled. It was not ready for full Squadron service until 1919 but did eventually become the front-line bomber of the RAF until the early 1930s. By then the Rolls Royce ‘Eagle’ engines had been replaced by the more powerful ‘Napier Lion’.

kBut the Vimy was an iconic aircraft in its own right. As mentioned it became the main bomber aircraft of the RAF and spawned a long list of other aircraft. It was itself built in from a Mk1 to a Mk10. A special type was the ‘Vernon’, for use policing in the Middle East A transport/troop carrier version flew in 1920 called the ‘Victoria’ developed from the 1919 ‘Vimy Commercial’ the first true airliner. This developed into the bigger 1934 ‘Valentia’ - a civilian version. From the Vimy bomber the bigger ‘Virginian’ was developed for the RAF. This was a stretched Vimy with an even greater range and first flew in 1922. Imperial Airways had a civilian passenger version built for their world-wide flights in 1922 called the ‘Vanguard’. But it was the ‘Virginian’ bomber, a ‘big’ Vimy, that began as a wood and canvas structure in 1922 that by 1941 (yes, they were still being used into WW2) had changed over to a full metal structure. This was the Mk10 fitted with the much more powerful Bristol Pegasus engine from 1933, but its origin was that WW1 bomber

of 1917. The Vimy took us from wooden stringbags to metal mono-construction, from pram-wheel undercarriage to proper sprung oleo legs.

Whilst the Vimy did not take park in WW1, it did gain some very important World Records FIRSTs, Alcock & Browns 1919 flight across the Atlantic was first; followed by the 1920 flight from London to Capetown in a Vimy Commercial by Broome and Cockerell; and then London to Sydney by two Australian pilots, Ross Smith and Keith Smith, taking 28 days. These epic flights carved out the eventual

civilian flight-paths for Imperial Airways which we still use today.

So those aircraft built in Linslade were the

fore-runners of a very great line. If you want to see a Vimy in the raw, there is one on display in the RAF Museum at Hendon. In the 1980’s a replica was built and flown (fitted with American Chrysler car engines) and is now on display at the Brooklands Museum in Weybridge.

For more information obtain a copy of C.F. Andrews book “Vickers Aircraft” by Putnam.

Neil Cairns: “You can identify an aircraft enthusiast by the fact they use the correct title of

‘aircraft’ and not ‘aeroplane’ or ‘airplane’; a ‘plane’ is a surface, and ‘aeroplane’

a surface that produces ‘lift’, ie a wing.”

You may not realise it but simply replacing yourplastic roof with a new glass roof, incorporatingPlikington Activ self-cleaning glass, will have a

tremendous eect on the way your conservatorylooks, feels and sounds. It will transform your

conservatory from a forgotten storage area intoa wonderful and usable extension to your home,

one that can be enjoyed all year round, comerain or shine.

When tted with the revolutionary Pilkington Activ glassand low-emissivity (low-e) Pilkington K Glass , your newly

transformed conservatory will be warmer in the winter, coolerin the summer and a lot less noisy when it rains.

Even conservatories with old glass roofs will benet from betterthermal insulation and solar control properties. And thanks to

the clever self-clean capabilities of the glass, you can be sureyour beautiful new conservatory roof stays that way.

Give your conservatorya new lease of life.Replace your polycarbonate roof with glass!

NHS Blood DonationIt’s easy to become a blood donor – just go to the website at www.blood.co.uk to find out more and to read some amazing stories of how blood donation has really helped to save lives.

Blood is something we all expect to be there for us when we need it, yet only 4% of us give blood. Many people would not be alive today if it wasn’t for the generosity of blood donors. Each blood donation can help as many as 3 people. 100 donations equates to 47 litres of blood. Blood stocks always fall during a major event such as the World Cup and throughout the summer with people going away on holidays and missing donating.

Anyone aged between 17-65, weighing more than 50 kg (7 stone 12lbs) and in general good health could potentially start saving lives by becoming a blood donor.

The next donor sessions in our area are as follows:Wednesday 16 July Leighton Buzzard Scout Association Hall Grovebury Road, LU7 4SW

Monday 28 July Mobile Unit at Tesco Store Vimy Road, LU7 1ER

Wednesday 13 August Brooklands Club Hall Garden Leys Off Brooklands Drive, LU7 3PQ

Tuesday 26 August Leighton Buzzard Scout Association Hall Grovebury Road, LU7 4SW

Ruth Walker is a Leighton Buzzard housewife who is now an incredible successful martial arts champion, and now better known as the Warrior Princess.

Five years ago the single mum of two decided to swap her life of comfort for a life in the ring after splitting up from her husband. She never dreamed it would lead to the life she leads today. Ruth’s new hobby quickly turned into an obsession as she began to compete – going on to claim the Southern Area crown after just a few months closely followed by the English Title.

Originally training just one night a week, she now trains for two sessions a day, 5/6 days a week with a mixture of strength/conditioning exercises and Muay Thai group classes as well as being a busy mum to her two sons and working in a couple of local schools.

Ruth Walker Takes Home British Muay Thai Kick Boxing Title

Ruth fought on the D-Struction Show in Milton Keynes on 31 May 2014. The show was a great success and one of the first in Milton Keynes for a long time. Hopefully the success of this show will lead

Meet Leighton Buzzard’s very own Warrior Princess

to more local events like this. Ruth is used to travelling all over the country for fights and it was no doubt a great relief to fight nearer to home in front of her own fans for once.

The title win for Ruth caps off a great year so far with this being her second title win in as many fights and within the space of a month. She beat a game and dangerous opponent in great fashion to capture the British Muay Thai 55kg Title. With a performance like this Ruth is now looking for European glory in September and maybe even a World Title in November.

Ruth now trains beginners right though to fighters competing at international level. She is based at The Fighter Factory which is based in the Fitness Academy in Aylesbury.

Ruth is overwhelmed by the amount of interest and support she has received from the local community through local Facebook pages and would like to thank everyone for their continued support.

Ruth would also like to take this opportunity to thank her two sponsors Shave Club UK and Home Detox UK. She is always on the lookout for new local sponsors and if you are interested then please contact Ruth through her Facebook page Ruth Walker (Warrior Princess) for more details.

We here at the E&v wish her the best of luck and look forward to following her and bringing you news of these title fights later in the year.

Next best thing to healthy, natural teeth.  Strong and stable, a dental implant restores a lost tooth so that it looks, feels, ts and functions like a natural tooth. Other options can lead to bone deterioration, and may interfere with eating, smiling, speaking and other activities of everyday life.Built to last, dental implants are a long-term solution. Traditional, tooth-supported dental bridges only last ve to seven years, and with proper care often more than 10 years, but at some point they may need to be replaced. While dental implants may need periodic adjustments, they can last a lifetime.

Enjoy life without worrying about your teeth! No need to stay home or feel uncomfortable in public, embarrassed because your smile looks dierent, or worrying that missing teeth will limit your ability to join in the fun or that removable dentures or tooth-supported replacement teeth will loosen or fall out when you talk, eat or laugh. Teeth restored with dental implants are teeth that let you, not your teeth, lead your life.Retain your natural face shape, and smile.  A face without teeth can sag and appear sunken and sad. Dental implants allow you to maintain the natural shape of your face and smile.Protect healthy bone. Leaving empty spaces in your mouth after losing one or more teeth can lead to additional health issues, such as the loss and deterioration of some of your jawbone. When it is not being used to support a natural tooth, the jawbone deteriorates, losing its strength and rmness. Dental implants are the only dental restoration option that preserves and stimulates natural bone, actually helping to stimulate bone growth and prevent bone loss.

More predictable than other repair and restoration methods. Dental implant treatment has a track record of reliable, long-term successful outcomes and is often considered “more predictable” than other treatments to repair or replace missing teeth, including bridgework, removable appliances and retreatment of failing root canal (endodontic) therapy. Get in touch for a free of charge 10 minute assessment to discuss how implants could change your life!

Workhouse in Leighton BuzzardInspired by my daughter’s homework I thought I would share a piece of information we found. She came home saying they had to write facts about workhouses. I recalled someone telling me that Leighton Buzzard had had a workhouse and with the power of Google discovered that the buildings down Grovebury Road which are now used as offices and doctors surgeries were in fact the workhouse of Leighton Buzzard.

The Poor Law Amendment Act of 1834 introduced the idea of Poor Law Unions - collections of parishes which would each make use of a Union Workhouse, built in one of the parishes of the Union. This is the classic Victorian Workhouse. Administrators could make workhouses as unpleasant as possible in order to deter the poor from seeking relief. Married couples were routinely separated and children taken from parents and housed separately.

The workhouse was built to the south of Leighton Buzzard in 1836, on what is now the Grovebury Road Industrial Estate and the paupers began to be moved in to the new building at the end of October 1836.

The workhouse could accommodate a hundred men and a hundred women, in separate dormitories and could also house fifty children. Not only were the dormitories separate, so were

the sitting and dining rooms and the sexes were kept apart even at exercise time. In the courtyard a building was erected for the Master of the Workhouse and another for the Relieving Officer.

The buildings were later put into temporary use as a prisoner-of-war camp. The workhouse buildings around the main courtyard survive and can be seen today. I’m sure you will recognise the buildings in the photographs.

The Local Government Act of 1929 transferred responsibility from Boards of Guardians to county and County Borough Councils and the introduction of the welfare state in 1948 saw the end of workhouses, although many lived on as local authority run old people’s homes. The Leighton Buzzard workhouse closed in around 1930 when Leighton Buzzard came under the Luton Public Assistance Institution.

In 1959 the old workhouse was bought by a local builder for use as offices. In 1983 it underwent complete renovation. The old buildings are now let out as units to companies.

Add to this image, bouncy castle entertainment for the children and you are describing Bassett Fest! It is based in the grounds of The Mary Bassett Lower School and features a selection of well-known local bands and soloists including Tess and the Durbervilles, Mark Joseph and many more. The music is completed by a BBQ, bouncy castle (for the kids) and real ale from a micro-brewery.

Last year was the inaugural fest and the quality of the music ensured that everyone immediately booked again for this year. Now in its second year, this should be a regular event in your calendar as it is going from strength to strength.

A b b o t t s View Farm is a small

family run farm based in Aston Abbotts, Bucks breeding alpacas. We also keep miniature ponies, pigs, guinea pigs, rabbits and ducks. We can also offer alpaca experiences, alpaca adoptions, open days, school visits and birthday parties.

We are James, Jo, Amy, Jess and Rosie and share our family run farm of 22.5 acres in the beautiful Buckinghamshire village of Aston Abbotts with 29 alpacas, 3 miniature shetland ponies, 3 guinea pigs, 2 rabbits, 5 khaki campbell ducks, Buckthorn, our RSPCA rescue pony, Pepper, our cavachon puppy and, in the spring and early summer, we have piglets. We are frequently visited by a barn owl or two, some local hares and have a pair of doves nesting in our barn too.

We completed building our Eco Farmhouse in January 2013 which is off grid so we rely on the sun’s energy to provide us with electricity, heating and hot water. We have rainwater harvesters to collect the rain

which supplies water to our animals and our loos and washing machine. We feel very blessed to have had the opportunity to build the house of our dreams and love being able to look out over our land and animals. It really is very beautiful and we love to share it with others.

We breed alpacas for their luxurious fibre, for their inquisitive nature and as pets for sale. Once you’ve met and spent time with an alpaca you’ll never forget them!

Our aim is to raise calm, friendly animals who are a pleasure to be around. We host Alpaca Experiences  and Open Days but be warned, it’s hard not to fall in love with these fascinating creatures! We also have pet males for sale should you have some spare land and need some lawnmowers that are a pleasure to watch!

We have a Facebook page where you can follow our news at www.facebook.com/AbbottsViewAlpacas and also a website www.abbottsviewalpacas.co.uk

Abbotts View Farm“On Sunday 8th June Abbotts View Alpaca Farm, just outside Leighton Buzzard, held an open day. We were lucky enough to arrive just twenty minutes after one of the alpacas had just given birth to a beautiful baby girl cria and it was amazing to watch her stand and take her first steps. By the time we left she was walking confidently round the field with her mum and proud big sister and saying hello to her new ‘family’.

We enjoyed meeting all the other alpacas and there were also rabbits, guinea pigs, a horse, pony and pigs enjoying their lovely muddy field! We couldn’t resist the homemade cake that was for sale and we even had glitter tattoos done!

All the staff were extremely welcoming and friendly and I would recommend anyone to go along to another open day in the future.”

Local Leighton Buzzard based Leanne Hughes Theatre School are busy working towards their next show which will be held at Walton High School, Milton Keynes on Saturday 12th July at 7.00pm and Sunday 13th July at 1.00pm and 6.00pm. This years’ show is entitled ‘The Old Fisherman’s Fable’ written by Jayne Gildersleve and promises to be as magical and spectacular as always.

All the pupils at the school perform in the show from the very youngest at 3 years old up to students of sixth form age - there is even a very popular, not to be missed, adult class number! Dances are performed in all genres – tap, ballet, modern, jazz, contemporary, musical theatre and street. Everyone loves show term, learning new dances and getting to wear fabulous costumes – there is a real buzz at the LHTS studios in Enterprise Way at the moment.

The school also has some very exciting news to share – you may have been lucky enough to see a group dancing at the May Fayre this year to Jumpin’ Jive which is a dance regularly performed when the school competes at dance competitions. Recently they have competed at the Mid Bucks Performing Arts Festival in Princes Risborough and after entering were informed that ITV would be there filming for a day for a new show which will be aired later this year called Dance Mums UK. On Saturday 14th June Jumpin’ Jive competed against the Jennifer Ellison Dance Academy in the Modern Group Inter 11-14 years section and were filmed for the show! With the cameras rolling and Jennifer Ellison herself sitting on the front row of the audience the pressure was on and the team performed their socks off and were absolutely delighted to be announced the winners of the section.

If you would like tickets to the show to watch this whole school of extremely talented dancers or more information about the show or school then please see the LHTS website at www.lhtheatreschool.co.uk or contact Janice on 07872 589800 or Fiona on 01525 210695.

Local dance school LHTS take on Dance Mums UK

“The whole day was a bit surreal but Jennifer, the ITV crew, the dance mums and dancers themselves were all very friendly. We are so proud of our LHTS Dance Company who competed throughout the day, all dancing beautifully and we had some great results across many different sections” LHTS spokesperson.

“SO PROUD OF TEAM LHTS TODAY......you all danced brilliantly all day, and Jumpin’ Jive beating Dance Mums UK was the icing on the cake! Well done everyone. So happy” Miss Leanne Hughes, Principal of LHTS.

“Buzzing!! Well done to my LHTS family! Proud doesn’t even come close” Miss Jocelyn Hughes, Vice Principal and Choreographer of Jumpin’ Jive.
