A BRIEF LOOK AT WHAT’S ON AT THE QUAY THEATRE

THE MAPLESTEADS WEA SPRING 2015 COURSEStarting Monday 19th January 2015 at 7.45pm

The 10 week course entitled “Conflict in the 19th Century Essex Countryside” will be given by the popular tutor Ted Woodgate. This course will chart the political transformation of Essex farmworkers in the 19th century against the background of national events.

How were Essex farmworkers, perceived as potential revolutionaries in 1830, transformed into enfranchised citizens within two generations?

The course will cover the Swing riots in 1830, the protest movements and incendiarism of “the hungry forties”, High farming and mid-century prosperity, the advent of the first national farmworkers union, the campaign for the franchise and participation in the first parish councils in 1894.

You are invited to attend an overview of the forthcoming course, meeting the tutor and other attendees at Great Maplestead Village Hall, Lucking Street at 7pm on Monday 19th January. There will be light refreshments before course commencement.

The first evening is free of charge and you will be most welcome for what is sure to be an enjoyable course, in a friendly informal atmosphere.

For more information please contact Jean Bowers (01787 460181).

JUST LIKE humans preventing dental problems in our pets is much better than having to cure dental disease. Therefore looking after your pets teeth on a daily basis, as with our own, is essential to optimise oral health and reduce onset or progression of gum and tooth disease.

It is estimated that up to 85% of dogs and cats over the age of two years have some degree of dental disease. It is thought to be one the most prevalent ‘medical conditions’ in our pets.

10 key points of dental disease: • Dental disease is the number one disease in small animals.• Start brushing from an early age getting the animal used to having their teeth looked at and brushed.• Always use animal specific products – human toothpastes etc contain the wrong constituents/frothing agents which can be harmful or unpalatable.• Brush daily, getting into a regular routine which is positively reinforced relating to some form of treat i.e. before a walk etc.• Dental chews and additives for oral health compliment brushing but the physical action of brushing is by far the best way to improve and maintain dental health.• Cats and dogs have two sets of teeth, with the deciduous teeth being lost usually between 4-8 months of age.• Poor teeth and gums will cause pain, affect appetite, and also result in very bad breath.• Rotten teeth and infected mouths have been shown to increase the risk of serious secondary disease in organs of the body i.e. the heart, kidneys etc.• As with humans it is worth having animals teeth and gums regularly checked by your vet or veterinary nurse – most practices will have ‘Dental clinics’ to specifically advise, and check your pet.• Certain diets are available in dried forms which are specifically designed to ‘brush teeth whilst chewing’. These help but regular brushing remains essential.

What’s on at Ardmore Vets?• The Ardmore ‘Pet Health Club’ is a way to save money on your pets’ preventative healthcare, and allow the cost to be spread over the year. Please contact us or speak to one of the team for further information about the new scheme.• The nurse team will be extending their nurse clinics both in number and the clinics available, be that advice about weight loss post Christmas, Dental care, Kidney disease etc. There will be advice available… just ask them.• The Identichip offer months will continue, where the cost of the biotherm chip which provides permanent identification and temperature measurement, will be implanted by our trained staff at reduced cost.
