El Salvador Sanitation Project

Pictured at left is one of 203 composting toilets which were completed in December 2015 in the community of Metalillito in El Salvador.

The Rotary Club of Mechanicsburg had been seeking a way to start this project since the fall of 2011 when our water well drilling team let by Frank Ulrich and John Petrie learned of this community’s need. The team had observed the need for better sanitation in general and was looking for a way to help when they were led to the community of Metalillito. This community understood the need and had organized to seek solutions and welcomed the club’s involvement. Since that time, the club’s water/sanitation committee

had sought a way to make it happen.

Finally in 2014, new club member, Don Seiple, led us to Salvadorian architec-tural engineer, Ricardo Barrera, who helped us really get going. The club sent $5,000 to the engineer and asked for him to build as many prototype toilets as he could to demonstrate our commitment and validate the design. He built seven in Nov.-Dec. 2013. The identifi ed need was for 180 composting toilets to serve a community of about 900 people.

We found a partner, the Rotary Club San Salvador Noroeste in El Salvador and then applied for a Rotary Foundation Global Grant. The total Global Grant re-quest was for $123,888 for 180 units. Our club contributed $35,400. This was be matched by $35,400 from Rotary District 7390 and the remainder came from the Rotary Foundation. The project was started in January 2015 and the toilets were fi nished in May with the number increased to 196 due to available funds and in-creased community need. (A total of 203 toilets were constructed when counting the prototypes.) The toilet project had over $20,000 remaining at this point and the host club and the community identifi ed a need to build a large water storage tank (100 m3) to supplement their smaller one. Rotary approved this addition and the construction was completed in December 2015. Seven club members visited the community for the project dedication in March 2016.

For 52 years the Rotary Club of Mechanicsburg has been sponsoring the Ox Roast at the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Park. Your participation is not only fun, but it helps raise funds to support many community activities (see page 19).

We hope you and your family and friends have a pleasant time at this event. Please take part in the several activities and games, and enjoying our tasty Char-roasted ½ Chicken or Tender Roast Beef (it’s not really an Ox).

There will be activities throughout the day and will Include:
