In my 25+ years at Wet Paint, I’ve cemented a few (what I like to think are) “funny-but-truisms” around this art store thing. Given our next door proximity to a hardware store, we often see confused folks who have stopped

one storefront too soon asking “Is this the hardware store?” I always tell them “It’s the hardware store for artists!” And it’s true! Just like the hardware store, our customers depend on us having the tools of their

trade, in stock when they need them, so they can use those tools to create something. Another of my witticisms, “You can never step in the same Wet Paint twice,” is just a silly way of saying that

everything around us is in constant flux. Some of this change is intentional – we’re always looking for new & novel ways to keep our inventory & experience interesting – and some of it is inevitable; valued staff people move on

(not often, but sometimes!) and beloved products get discontinued.Balancing the former – Keep things consistent! – with the latter – Things are different! – is probably the biggest

challenge we face on a daily basis, whether planning our classes, producing our annual Holiday catalog, or just opening the door for business. In my 25+ years at Wet Paint, I’ve cemented a few (what I like to think are) “funny-but-truisms” around this art store thing. Given our next door proximity to a hardware store, we often see confused folks who have stopped

one storefront too soon asking “Is this the hardware store?” I always tell them “It’s the hardware store for artists!” And it’s true! Just like the hardware store, our customers depend on us having the tools of their

trade, in stock when they need them, so they can use those tools to create something. Another of my witticisms, “You can never step in the same Wet Paint twice,” is just a silly way of saying that

everything around us is in constant flux. Some of this change is intentional – we’re always looking for new & novel ways to keep our inventory & experience interesting – and some of it is inevitable; valued staff people move on

(not often, but sometimes!) and beloved products get discontinued.Balancing the former – Keep things consistent! – with the latter – Things are different! – is probably the biggest

challenge we face on a daily basis, whether planning our classes, producing our annual Holiday catalog, or just opening the door for business.
