Underage Drinking: Role-Playing Game Making Impact
The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) introduces Start the Talk, its new videogame-like tool that helps parents practice tough conversations about underage drinking in a risk-free virtual environment. Start the Talk is the newest component of Talk. They Hear You., SAMHSA’s underage drinking prevention campaign that launched last May. The campaign equips parents and caregivers with the information, tools, and confidence they need to start talking to youth early—as early as 9 years old—about the dangers of alcohol. Start the Talk is an evidence-based behavioral tool that uses life-like avatars to engage in interactive conversations. The simulation is based on research in social cognition, learning theory, and neuroscience. Each virtual role-play conversation is structured as a 10- to 15-minute interactive, videogame-like experience. Users enter a risk-free practice environment, assume a parental role, and engage in a conversation with an intelligent, fully animated, emotionally responsive avatar that models human behavior and adapts its responses and behaviors to the user’s conversation decisions. Talk. They Hear You. is SAMHSA’s national public service announcement campaign that empowers parents to talk to young children as early as 9 years old about the dangers of underage drinking.
Visit www.underagedrinking.samhsa.gov to try Start the Talk and for more tips and information.

Jefferson Public Library Three ways that won’t cost you a cent to help raise funds for the new library building!
Y ou can help the library earn cash donations from Fred Meyer just by shopping with your Fred
Meyer Rewards Card. Fred Meyer is donating $2.5 million per year to nonprofits based on
where their customers tell them to give. Here’s how the program works: Sign up for the
Community Rewards Program by linking your Fred Meyer Rewards Card at www.fredmeyer.com/
communityrewards. You can search for the library by the Friends’ non-profit number 81064 or Friends
of the Jefferson Public Library.
Then, every time you shop and use your Rewards Card, you can help us earn a donation. Not to worry,
you still earn your Rewards Points, Fuel Points, and Rebates, just as you normally do. Sign up now! (And
spread the word to family and friends.)
I f you purchase Amerigas Propane, bring your receipts to the library. They can be submitted for cash
for the new library. Receipts from anywhere in the United States are valid.
W e also accept used ink and toner cartridges to turn in for cash.
Now, wasn’t that easy?
Would you like to have your gas paid to go to Stayton every Saturday? We are looking for a volunteer to
be a courier of library materials between the Jefferson Public Library and the Stayton Public Library. This
means: Pick up the materials at the Jefferson Public Library, deliver them to the Stayton Public Library,
and bring the materials waiting there back to the Jefferson Library. The hours are somewhat flexible, so if
you want to go shopping or run errands while you are in Stayton, that is fine. The volunteer must have a
valid driver’s license and proof of car insurance. Mileage will be reimbursed at the prevailing IRS rate.
Phone Valerie at 541-327-3826 or stop by the library
