Wealso realize you had a choice of pastimes for this evening and you opted for our show. For that, we are truly grateful. Wewill work hard to ensure that you do not regret the decision.

The designer's head on the chopping block today is Francetta Strasser-King. She cannot wait to get your feedback on herdesigns. Please join us on the web or on Face book to give feedback about the designs and the show's orchestration.

My BackgroundI am a self-taught designer who loves colors and has a flair for drama. These have been the drivers behind my designs. Iam from Sierra Leone, West Africa and my daily challenge is showcasing authentic African garb with a Western flair. Thisline was dubbed ‘Fusion’ by my son, Toyin. He likened it to a kaleidoscope; everything came together in a blaze of colors. The line fuses cultures together in a practical form. The garments are meant to enhance a woman's beauty and can be dressedup or down depending on the occasion or the mood of wearer. They are meant to bring out the gypsy gene of the wearer.

How I startedI picked the passion for color and design from my grandmother, Mama Becca. She was a talented designer and planted theseed in me. My punishment spot as a child was to sit still under her cutting table so that she could keep an eye on me. Mytroubles only multiplied because once I had a glimmer of light, the sleeve for her client’s outfit became the dress for mydoll.I was born with the drama component; my family excludes me from planning events because their favorite rejoinder ' shedoes not do things in halves.' As a child, my Aunty Gladys (father’s younger sister) indulged me by sewing every crazydesign I could concoct. I have since been haunted by the fluidity of fabric and how it molds to form.

The JourneyAccording to my mother, I started with long flowing skirts that she termed “good for sweeping the streets”. They were sobright in color, she was confident I could easily be tracked in the dark. She hated them. There was a phase wherein I playedwith pockets and each pocket on the outfit was decorated to have its own identity. Nothing matched on the outfits, thefabric weave did not blend and it was torture to iron my outfits. My sister pledged never to wear any portion of that “rotorata”. I moved unto the bling phase and my outfits escalated to rows of sequins and babbles. My father signed and justwanted to know how much of his money went into ‘this’? I navigated to the ‘shoulder pad’ stage – they were a minimumof 2 ins thick. My brother had a field day mimicking my shoulders in action during praise and worship in church. Throughall this hate ‘love’, I was confident that every design was a runway creation and my family did not have the fashion senseto recognize my ‘pizzazz’.

I broke shoes that were too big for my feet (sorry Ms. Murietta). I mixed nail polish and perfume to test the consistency(sorry Aunty Angie). I dropped expensive jewelry down the drain in a cleaning effort (sorry Mummy), and I had willingdonors for makeup classes (Aunty Nancy). One thing was certain through this journey: my family supported me throughthick and thin. I love and appreciate them.

TodayI studied my craft and got better with time. I learnt to shop for value and style. I studied different forms to find my niche.I am still growing. Take a chance on me; try my design and if you find room for growth, please offer me the feedback.

This show is for Toyin – everyday you give a reason to plough on. You are truly an amazing gift from God and I am soproud of you. I love you.

Thank you Uncle Bosede for showing me that every door can be ploughed through regardless of setbacks.

WELCOME
