Smarter Conversations to Navigate a Smart World

Change is happening and whether we like it or not, change is happening whether we are involved or not. It’s becoming more and more dangerous to get left behind, it’s more and more dangerous to not be involved. When we are stuck in a state of confusion and overwhelm with all of the possibilities, we are unable to take the conversation forward. If we can’t move forward then no amount of Smart Technology will help us.

In this keynote, Zoe will cut through the buzz and hype and go straight to the heart of what’s important for Smart Communities and how we can all get involved. She will discuss how simple shifts which embrace a new mindset and readily available technology can and will make the greatest difference in our everyday lives. Zoe will explain how we can start moving towards greater mobility, connection, and true inclusion within any community.

Weather and Climate – using smarter forecasts well

Making smart agricultural decisions for weather and climate requires us to be connected globally as well as locally, as many regional and global effects influence our local weather. For many decades, the scientific world has been pursuing and implementing the dream of accurate weather and climate forecasting, with increasing success. To do this globally has required extraordinary cooperation between nations to exchange information in real time, dating from well before the modern Internet, and has required major advances in observations, science, and supercomputing. To achieve real value to the economy and the preservation of life at the local level, we need to go beneath the surface of our favourite weather apps. We need to understand the global system, how high quality local forecasts are made, and make intelligent judgement around risks.

Dealing with extreme weather in a Smart Community

Our exposure to extreme heat, fire, and precipitation events is rising. However, our scientific understanding and skill at forecasting and observing such events is also rising, although we will never be perfectly accurate. One of the adaptive measures that we can take in a smart community is to use these improved forecasts and observations to make critical decisions earlier and taking the relative risks into account. The presentation will demonstrate our rising skill, our improved observations, and the nature of some of the acute threat, and will explain how to use our new information better.
