The Space Shuttle Endeavour and Pompeii Exhibitions run proved to be one of the best attended club runs with a total of 35 participants. Ventura members joined Santa Barbara members at the Las Posas exit in Camarillo and 18 cars altogether took a scenic trek

Valley Rally and lunch event Mary & Rich Nohr

Come join us on Saturday July 19th for a really fun road rally experience. Don’t worry…it’s not a raging road race, but a timed driving event with turn-by-turn directions and a series of questions to be answered along the way. The objective is to arrive at predefined Checkpoints not too early and not too late. It won’t be com-plicated and speeds will be consistent with posted limits. The rally starting point will be in Santa Maria and will follow a scenic route through the valleys of northern Santa Barbara County to Rich & Mary Nohr’s estate in Solvang. There, we’ll enjoy lunch and refreshments on the patio, and I expect some hilarious anecdotes. The cost will be $10 per person to cover food, wine, beer and water. Please feel free to bring a refreshing

dessert to share. The rally will require a driver and navigator in each vehicle so we will help with teaming up individuals that do sign up. We will depart from Goleta at 9:00am and caravan up to the starting location in Santa Maria. The rally will kick off at 10:30am culminating approximately two hours later at the Nohr’s. Additional details will be provided as we get closer to the event. For now please contact Mary Nohr at [email protected] if you are interest-ed in participating in this exciting activity and provide her with your email address and phone number.

With our nation’s birthday just around the corner let me start out by wishing everyone a very Happy 4th of July. This is a time for each of us to reflect on our freedoms, dem-ocratic principles and personal liberties, and to recognize the sacrifices made by those who fought and died to uphold these treasured values. As we celebrate this great occa-sion let us salute our founding fathers and all those who have dedicated their lives in the service of this country in both the military and public service. And hats off to all Americans for their part in making this country the truly great nation that it has become and will con-tinue to be. As a long standing tradition, the Corvette Club of Santa Barbara will once again partici-pate in Santa Barbara’s Fourth of July Parade. Over the years the crowds have loved and cheered CCSB as dozens of colorful Corvettes proudly paraded down State Street. Following the parade, Frank and Barbara LoMonaco will once again host a fun patriotic BBQ at their home. I urge all CCSB members to join in and decorate their Corvette in their favorite Red, White and Blue regalia, and show the spirit that Corvette embodies in our great American culture. Please let Frank or Barbara know if you are planning to participate in the parade and/or attend the BBQ afterwards. This is a club funded event so there is no additional cost to club members. More information will be provided in this Newsletter and at the upcoming Monthly meeting on Tuesday July 1. Be sure to be on the lookout for any correspondence that Frank and Barbara may send out containing updated details on the parade and BBQ. And just remember…to have a nice 4th don’t have a Fifth on the 3rd (if you get my drift!).

NCM Master Ambassador Frank LoMonaco The National Corvette Museum Board of Directors met to discuss and decide on the future of the Skydome building. Three primary options were presented: 1) Fill the sinkhole and replace the floor so that the building is much like it was previously; 2) Keep the entire sinkhole as is; 3) Keep a smaller portion of the hole open. With 14 of the 16 board members present, the group decided to move forward with Option 3, keeping a portion of the sinkhole open, but pending review of further infor-mation. This option as it stands would include an opening approximately 25’ by 45’ wide, and 30’ deep, providing views down into a portion of the cave. The opening

could have some existing ground and rock face, and a dirt embankment where one or two of the cars could be placed for display. After much discussion the Board decided that additional information was necessary before making a final decision. Some changes discussed could affect the cost estimate. More infor-mation was also requested on the impact on the humidity in the room and potential impact on any cars displayed within; the temperature control of the room and any associated impact on the Museum’s utility costs; and review and consideration of any other costs associated with the maintenance of the Skydome if the hole is left partially open. The additional information

could result in the plans being modified.

4th of July Parade and Party Afterwards Barbara LoMonaco

Just a reminder about the 4th of July parade and BBQ. As usual, the staging area won’t be announced until the day before the parade but as soon as we have the exact information we will let you know – by e-mail - so be sure to check. Last year our area was on Micheltorena, just west of State Street. Sorry, we are NOT allowed to throw candy to the kids so please don't bring any. The BBQ, after the parade will be at Frank and Barbara LoMonaco's house - please drive in the backyard and park on the lawn. Frank will be making his famous Margaritas but if you want anything else, please BRING YOUR OWN as no other drinks will be provided.

IMPORTANT: Since there was no June meeting, and if you were not at the picnic and you want to attend the parade and/or the BBQ, please email Barbara at [email protected] - no later than June 30 - to let

her know you will be coming.

MEMBERS HIGHLIGHTS

Members Sandy Rubel-Halverson and Pat Bloom had a wonderful time in Russia on a riverboat cruise. They flew into St Petersburg to start their adventure which over a three day period included a city tour, the incredible Hermitage, Catherine's Palace, a performance of The Black Swan by the Russian Ballet and the beautiful Peterhof Gardens. The next stop was a small town called Mandrogi. Even a light rain did not dampen spirits at a barbeque under a tent, vodka tasting, and yes, souvenir shopping. The next two days brought the towns of Kizhi and Goritsy to ex-plore, each unique and special. It was then off on a city tour of Yaroslavi which included an incredible church, monastery and puppet theatre. The last day before Moscow was Uglich with visits to a wonderful cathedral, special church and open air market. Three days were spent in Moscow exploring the Kremlin, Armory, a city tour, the famous metro (like no other) and a performance at the Old Moscow Circus. The last day in Moscow included a tour of the Bow Hill War Memorial, beautifully laid out.

The days were sprinkled with beautiful singing groups, and children's perfor-mances. Onboard guests were treated to fascinating and informative lectures, vodka and Russian Blini tasting and of course the beautiful views along the Vol-ga. The entire crew did everything possible to make the trip memorable for each guest. The guest lecturer, who was born in Crimea, offered a Q&A session open to any subject, and encouraged guests to participate. All of the city guides were very informative and the onboard hosts friendly and helpful. It was a trip worthy of a bucket list.

Members Ray & MarySue Seider and Mike & Linda Wolfe both received build dates for the new Sting-ray’s. The Seider’s Torch Red coupe was built June 20th and will have a NCM Museum delivery July 28th. The Wolfe's Crystal Red coupe will be built July 14th.

Dues are due no later than July 15th if you have not paid up please send them to Pat by the 15th

CLASSIFIEDS

PCPA (Pacific Conservancy of the Performing Arts – in case you’re interested) is a favorite event for CCSB which the club has attended several times. The nice thing is that even if you attend consistently, you will always see something different. And this year’s show was Definitely Different! In attendance were Tony and Paula Megowan, Paul Zemella, Bob and Ivy Aanderud, Gretchen Falvo, Richard and Mary Nohr, Rust-ie Van Buren and Sharon, Raymond Tracy and Ursula, Jim and Judy Purcell, Fred and Sharon Smith, and Frank and Barbara Lo-Monaco. We all met at Timbers and headed

north up Hwy 101 to Buellton for dinner at Avant Tapas and Wine Bar. Avant has over 100 wines from over 24 wineries all under 1 roof. Tradition says that bar keepers in Spain would put a little plate of food atop (“tapa”) a patron’s drink in order to reduce the effect of the alcohol. Each plate was just a little different from the others, which promoted sharing and conversation. So in keeping with tradition, we enjoyed good food, good conversation and even a little wine tasting (OK a lot of wine tasting) for those of us who were interest-ed. Avant even presented a delicious bread pudding to Tony and Paula to cel-ebrate their anniversary. Of course it was shared by all and was a nice ending to a great meal.

Then we headed to the Solvang Festival Theater to see Noises Off. The dizziest, funniest, backstage farce ever written, Noises Off careens us through the roller coaster lives of a hapless troupe of provincial actors as they go through the motions of a cringe-worthy comedy known as Nothing On. In a brilliant turnabout of door slamming miscues, misdirection's, and misunderstandings, onstage romantic intriguers are foiled by bunglers and burglars, while the players backstage exhibit their best follies and worst foi-bles spinning the play toward a hysterical climax. The theater world turns with side-splitting results to reveal mystery and mayhem as the cast and crew pull out all the stops to keep track of newspapers and cactuses, former and future

lovers, missing cast mates, and the odd sardine. Thanks to those of you who joined us and helped to make our 34th Wedding An-niversary a memorable one! See page 6 for more pictures

Kalyra Grape Stomp Tony & Paula Megowan

It’s time to sign up for the Great Grape Stomp at Kalyra Winery on Saturday October 4, 2014. It will be a fun filled afternoon and you will have the oppor-tunity to stomp in a vat of grapes a la Lucile Ball (last year we made “Toe Jam Merlot” according to the winemak-er), enjoy a full Italian feast, listen and dance to the Just Dave Band (reggae, rock, country), and lots more – and of

course the wine will be flowing all afternoon. You can even wear your togas (come on, you all know you want to!) If you want to attend, you can buy your tick-ets by going onto Kalyra’s website. The tickets are $50 per person, but if you belong to the wine club tickets are $40 per person. Please note that they are having the event on Saturday 10/4/14 and Sunday 10/5/14. We are attending the event on Saturday 10/4/14 so be sure to select the correct date when buying your tickets.

Please follow this link (http://www.kalyrawinery.com/) to the web-site for more information and to buy your tickets. Once you are in the website select EVENTS, then scroll down to The Great Grape Stomp/ Saturday Ticket. We suggest you do this as soon as possible as they expect to sell out by early July (especially the Saturday date). Let us know once

you have bought your tickets so we can maintain a list of who’s attending. We’ve already contact-ed the winery and they will reserve a table for us like they did last year. We had a great time last year and are really looking forward to it again this year. See you at the Stomp and don’t forget your To-gas!!!
