Karen Bourland is in the bottom left corner. She attended a small Christain school where they had banquets instead of dances, they didn’t have themes for these events. However, she was on the banquet court and won queen. Now, Ms.

Bourland is a CP English teacher.

The photo above is Jacob Gunn’s highschool yearbook picture and the photo to the right was his date to the homecoming dance. The theme to his homecoming dance was “Party like it’s 1999”. Now, Mr. Gunn is a Student Natu-ralist teacher at Olathe East High

School.

The the left is Sandy Keating at her high school dance in 1972. Her school didn’t

have a theme for this dance, but she did have a wonderful time. Now,

Mrs. Keating teaches in the busi-ness department at Olathe East High

School.

Both photos to the right are of Mike McDonald. This 1994 High School dance had a 1970s theme and he was also on court. Now, Mr. Mcdonald is a Math teacher at Olathe East High School.

To the left is Nathaniel Thuston on “MORP” court and to the right is him and his date at his “just you and I” themed dance in 1983. Now Mr. Thuston teaches in the history department at Olathe East High School.

When should I order my boutonniere? It’s best to order as far in ad-vance as possible but don’t worry if you are short on time many plac-es will have extras ready that they can adjust to match you and your dates outfi ts.

Do I have to have a date? NO! It’s never an obligation to have a date. It is always fun to go with a big group of friends, or with a date group. The amount of fun you have is up to you! Go in with a good attitude no matter what the “date” situation is.

When should I make reservations? If you know your school is having a dance the same week as other schools then make sure you call at least 3 weeks in advanced depending on the size of your group. Also if the number in your group changes make sure you call the restaurant and let them know the new numbers are going to be.

What’s an appropriate amount of people to have in a group? Any group size over 20 tends to get a little out of control; it’s hard to all agree on where to eat, where to take pictures, and what time everything is planned at. In the end it just depends on what you want. If you like big groups of people then a bigger group is meant for you, but just remember that you all will be meeting up lat-er anyway.

What do I do when someone has the same dress as me? Don’t worry it is not the end of the world. is happens to every-one at some point in their life. All you have to do is ignore it if it’s not brought up. In the slightest chance that it will get brought up don’t be rude about it and compliment the girl who is wearing the same dress as you because deep down she is just as embarrassed as you are.

Q&A

Molly’s Event Magazine had the chance to interview Molly Munyan about her homecoming experience! Molly wore a balloon dress that she made all on her own! “How long did the dress take you to make?”, we asked. “The creative process is what took the longest. I spent about 6 hours coming up with the de-sign and sketching it then I spent about 5 and a half hours total building dress.” Molly had to make two of the same dresses; one for the homecoming football game and one for the actual dance. Time was an issue for Molly because she couldn’t work on the dresses more than 48 hours in advance otherwise the

balloons would start to deflate. Aside from the amazing dress Molly wore, her Home-coming experience was made even more special when she was on the homecoming court and WON homecoming queen! “How did it feel to be the 2014 Olathe East Homecoming Queen?”, we asked. Molly re-sponded with, “It felt amazing! I was very surprised because I thought another girl that wason court would win for sure. It just made the dance that much more fun”. This dress isn’t the only clothing article Molly has made out of balloons. Molly instagrams outfits that she makes and her clothing line,“POP”, will be featured in the Olathe East Fashion Show where her models will all be modeling balloon outfits. Molly also mentioned to us that she will begin sketching de-signs for her prom dress that will be made out of balloon so be on the lookout for that!

If you chose

mostly A’s you are a classic dance girl. You al-

ways want to look you best and show up with the best date

in town. You like going with a bigger group because you know you will have more

fun.

If you chose mostly D’s you are a

go with the fl ow kind of girl. You don’t care what oth-ers think of you as long as you are having a good time that is all that matters. You are very

laid back and like to keep things casual. If

you chose most-ly C’s you like the edgy

with some fun con-verse.

mostly B’s you like to have fun but really just

want to spend time with your date. Not going to an

DRESSES

Deciding on what type of dress to wear and which accessories to wear with it can be a confusing, diffi cult task. We are here to help! Here are some diff erent types of dresses to give you some help and guidence depending on what you want.

ACCESSORIES

A If you are wearing a dress like Dress A, which has a high neckline and a busy top half, you will want to stay away from necklaces. Consider fun bracelets and/or rings instead!

B Since this dress is printed and the focal point is on the back, you probably want to go with a simple necklace if you want to wear one at all. Earrings would be a good idea for this dress as well and since the top half isn’t any busier than the rest of the dress, you can make them as big as you want!

CIf you are wearing a vintage style dress like Dress C, anything pearly would fit the look you are going for. Since this dress is pretty simple, dont limit yourself to just one piece of jewelry. Go all out!

DDress D is a one strapped, sequin dress. Since the dress itself is very blingy and it goes halfway up your chest/neck, you wont want to wear a necklace. Instead, you might want to wear either hoop earrings or some fun, statement earrings.

E Dress E is a high-low dress with a lacey top. Since this one also has kind of a busy top, if you go with a necklace, make sure it doesn’t take away from the top. Any gold- jewelry would look great with this dress.

Event asked teens from all over to write in their worst dance memories. These stories will help calm your nerves before the dance, and are sure

to make your embarassing moments seem like a breeze.

Dear Event,

Do I have a moment for you! It was homecoming night my jounior year. My date was the cuteset boy in school and I wanted to make sure to impress him. After pictures with our group we all went out to din-ner before heading to the dance.During dinner I started telling a story that I got really excited about (I think it was about Harry Potter or something, but that doesnt matter). So I start-ed using hand while telling the story to explain it better. My

Dear Event,

Let me tell you about my worst dance memory. It happened the night of prom when my boyfriend of 3 years decided to dump me. He told me he just didn’t want to be with anyone at the time. Then later that night i found him making out with my best friend. In my house. In my room. On my bed. At that moment I was done with both of them and with the night in general. It was a bit EVENTful to say the least.

details and expressions in the story got bigger and bigger so I stood up (still very into the sto-ry) fl ung my hands in the air and knocked over not only my drink,

but my dates drink. Which both ended up falling into

his lap making the front of his pants wet the rest of night. My face turned completly red

as I sat back down com-pletly embarassed of the

whole situation. The rest of the night I was silent feeling terri-ble about what I did at dinner.

“...Knocked over not only my

drink, but my dates drink...”

Dear Event, Get ready because this story is a long one. So I got asked to homecoming by a boy who went to a diff erent school. I thought it would be fun to meet new people and get out of my comfort zone for once. The day of the dance seemed to fall on the busiest day of the year. With a bad cold that turned into bronchitis, I had to start off the day by taking my fi rst ACT. Even though I was super tired and not feel-ing well at all I decided that I was going to have a blast at the dance no matter what. After the ACT I got ready for the dance and was ready for pictures and dinner. In our group there were three other couples that were all dating. Assuming that my date asked me to go with him be-cause we were good friends was a bad assumption on my part. Anyway at dinner I was very uncomfortable. Not only because my date didn’t introduce me to the other couples, but becasue everyone at the table had known each other for a long time. Therefore awkward me tried to join in on conversations but everytime I did so I would get cutt-off by someone. At this point I was ready to go to the dance and fi nally have some fun. We showed up at the dance and that is when my date told me “I don’t dance.” I thought what do you mean you don’t dance we are at a DANCE the point is to DANCE. That meant after 20 minutes of being there he wanted to leave. At this point I was super tired and feel-ing even worse than I was that morning. Now it was time for the after party. Which was considered going back to his house and watching a movie. I thought it would be fun until all the couples started making out and my date tried to pull a move on me. I was done. Done with the night and done with my date. That night I was in my bed by 10:30 and Iwasn’t ashamed of it at all.
