Welcome to Grace Cathedral. Choral Evensong marks the end of the working day and prepares for the approaching night. The roots of this service come out of ancient monastic traditions of Christian prayer. In this service we are invited to reflect the past day, to pray for the world and for ourselves, and to commend all into God’s hands.The beauty of the music is offered to help us set our lives in the light of eternity; the same light which dwelt among us in Jesus, and which now illuminates us by the Spirit. Homily

The Apostles’ Creed Sung on a monotone.

All I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth;

And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead.

He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father almighty. From thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Ghost, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

2017 Chorister Recognitions

After the choral anthem the Dean says something like the following: The cathedral choristers are being honored today: for the hundreds of hours they spend each year in the preparation and performance of cathedral music; for their diligence on weekends and holidays throughout the school year; for their young voices illuminating the beauty and power of the Christian Gospel: for all these things we honor them today.

2017 Chorister Recognitions

The 8th grade class comes forward. Then the Choirmaster says something like: As they complete their time of service in the choir, we recognize and thank the graduating 8th graders of the class of 2016: NAME, together with the Dean and all whose lives you have touched through music, I present you this hymnal as a token of thanks for your years of ministry at Grace Cathedral. Having received the hymnal, each graduating chorister then shakes hands with the Dean the Headmaster, and the Choirmaster. After all have received their hymnals, Dean leads the following or similar prayers. Let us pray. O Lord God Almighty, whose glory cherubim and seraphim and all the hosts of heaven with ceaseless voice proclaim: Hear and accept, we ask, the praises of your church. Pour down upon your ministers in choir and sanctuary such a spirit of faith, reverence, and joy as shall lift both their hymns and their lives unto you; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. O God, who in the gift of music has given us a revelation of your divine beauty: teach us to love you in all your gifts, and so to devote ourselves in all our work to your glory, that through music we may raise humankind from the sorrows of this world to the enjoyment of your divine loveliness; through your Son our Savior Jesus Christ. Amen. Now let us say together the choristers’ prayer, which begins each morning’s rehearsal:

Bless, O Lord, us your servants who minister in your temple: Grant that what we sing with our lips we may believe in our hearts, and what we believe in our hearts we may show forth in our lives; through Jesus Christ our Lord. AMEN.

The dean says the Grace: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with us all evermore. The hymn follows; all return to their seats.
