Field & Maintenance Building – Nov 2016
Ø Construction of the Canadian High Arctic Research Station (CHARS) will be completed by 2017
Ø AANDC is leading the construction project of the CHARS facility, which will be transferred to POLAR upon completion in 2017
Ø CHARS will be a signi6icant part of the existing pan-‐northern network of research infrastructure across the North (CNNRO), and contribute to Canada’s Northern Strategy
Knowledge Management and Mobilization
6
The Knowledge Management component of Polar Knowledge Canada includes the following work plans: Ø Knowledge Mobilization Ø Capacity Building and Outreach Ø Traditional Knowledge These activities ensure citizens, including Northerners, bene6it from publicly funded research by following standard data practices and open sharing of data and knowledge.
A Pan-‐Northern S&T Program
7
A world-‐class science and technology program invites international cooperation Current priorities for 6irst 5-‐year plan (2014 – 2019): Ø Alternative and renewable energy for the North
− Reduce the dependency on high-‐cost imported energy, explore feasibility of local sources, northern application of alternative technologies
Ø Predicting the impacts of changing ice, permafrost, and snow on shipping, infrastructure, and communities − Improve predictive capabilities and increase knowledge on dynamic cryospheric elements to
support community adaptation and improve climate models
Ø Baseline information and monitoring to prepare for development − Improve decision support for responsible and sustainable development in Canada’s North through
enhanced characterization
Ø Improving northern infrastructure − Undertake research and technology development to improve ef6iciency and cost-‐effectiveness of
Northern infrastructure design and construction
Ø Underwater situational awareness and associated marine research − Enhance monitoring and surveillance of the environment and human activities
Enhancing Collaboration
8
POLAR facilitates coordination and brokers partnerships across: Ø Canadian science-‐based departments
and agencies
Ø Territorial governments and northern organizations
Ø Industry and private sector
Ø Aboriginal organizations
Ø Academia: universities, colleges, research networks
Ø International organizations and research networks
Ø Monitoring Program in Cambridge Bay Ø Solar -‐ NRCan and Campbell ScientiKic Ø Wind – NRCan and WEICan Ø Biomass – NRCan Study Ø Diesel -‐ QEC Ø Demand Side Management – NRCan Ø HRV Project
Ø NEISWG Ø Carleton University
