Center Line Public Schools Eve Kaltz, Superintendent Week in Review February 10, 2017 I love my two sisters and my brother, although we are all very different. My brother, Scott, is a senior scientist and is analytical and serious. I call him Pooh Bear because he loved Winnie the Pooh when he was little. Scott lives out of town and we don’t see him often, but just when I need him most, he calls! My older sister is serious, very spiritual, and a giver. Amy and I are 15 months apart in age and have always known how to comfort each other. Then there is my little sister, KK. She is HILARIOUS! KK keeps all of us laughing and lightens every situation. She called me a few years ago to tell me that she signed the two of us up for a 30 and up soccer league! I have NEVER played soccer on a team. I’m old, slow, and tired. When I refused to participate, she apparently thought that a women’s hockey team would be more my style, so she signed us up for that! My grandparents were a vital part of our lives. My maternal grandma lived to be 100, and my paternal grandparents lived late into their 90s. Unfortunately my dad died at 60 and mom at 68. We have always been a close family, and my parents were very much into rituals. All four of us looked forward to family pot roasts, trips to Indiana and Ohio, and summers spent with cousins. After my parents passed away, my siblings and I made a decision to continue to enjoy each other and spend time together. I have spent this past week with my sisters, their husbands, and my brother and his wife, and it has been remarkable. We have precious memories of our childhood and of our parents and grandparents. We have shared memories, explored all kinds of places, eaten way too much food, and laughed ourselves into belly aches. This is precious time. I know that families are all different and that people frequently have differences of opinion, but I believe we can choose to overcome these. It is important to all of us that we continue to build our relationships and support each other, and I feel it is a good model for our kids. I hope you have precious memories of your past that you can draw on when times get tough, and that your sibling/childhood friend/cousin— someone--has been with you throughout time. I hope you have a special person with whom you can escape, laugh, and share your fears and dreams. I pray every day that our students have these gifts, too. State of Michigan assessments began this week with the WIDA exam, and that means CLPS Technology was busy in January updating all WIDA and M-STEP testing servers and client software to the latest yearly versions. In all, Center Line Public Schools has 10 “Testing Site Manager” servers (TSMs) that help load balance all the large amounts of data transmission associated with online testing. The latest versions of the software add features that should make for the smoothest testing season yet, at least in theory. Online assessments have placed a large burden on all districts in the state,

but I am very proud of the way our technology and instructional staffs have shouldered this transition. Each year the preparation process moves closer to routine, even if the amount of labor required remains the same.

In other news, website usability has become a hot topic across the country. ADA website accessibility rules have been in place for a number of years, and a nationwide campaign to bring awareness to these rules is in progress. This campaign has brought a flood of complaints to the Office for Civil Rights (OCR), most of which have been targeting school district websites. Center Line Public School's announced, but not launched, website is undergoing some redesign to ensure we are compliant with these rules. We hope to have these issues corrected and the new platform launched soon.

As accessibility and usability continue to face scrutiny across the state, the Michigan Department of Education (MDE) has launched a usability study on the MDE website. If you are interested in helping to improve the state’s education website, you can take the short 10-15 minute survey here:

Note: The survey is open through February 21, 2017.

COURT IS IN SESSION

Warren’s 37th District Court Judge Matthew Sabaugh presided over three cases for students in Mr. Plotzke’s and Mr. Evans's classes. The Court in School Program allows students to see what really happens in court and the consequences individuals pay when they break the law so students can make good choices in their lives. In addition to the court cases, a drug counselor and youth counselor from Families Against Narcotics spoke to students about the dangers of drugs and how they could negatively impact their lives. The youth counselor shared his story on how drugs impacted his life and what he is doing now to be positive influence with teens struggling with drugs in their lives.

CONGRATS TO OUR BOYS’ VARSITY BASKETBALL TEAM!

On Friday night our CLHS boys’ varsity basketball team clinched sole possession of the MAC Bronze Division title with their 89-63 win over Marine City, bringing them to a perfect 8-0. The last time Center Line was able to do this was 20 years ago!

We also had some staff members and their spouses attend along with Ms. Szabo and Mrs. Howery. The excitement in our gym was overwhelming!

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL ROCKING THEIR SEASON, TOO!

The girls’ basketball team, coached by Mr. Trevor Warcinsky, has been very successful so far this season as well! Click on the picture of the article below to read more about it in the Warren Weekly and one of the pictures on the left to see the MI Prep Zone photo shoot of their game last night against Lutheran North!

WRESTLERS ROCK THE SILVER

Congratulations to our wrestlers who finished with a perfect record on top of the Silver Division. The team also captured the Silver Division Tournament Championship this past weekend. Matt Collins finished 2nd in his weight class. Jason Her and Matt Andrews finished 4th and Christian Laskie and Jerry Singleton both finished 5th in their weight classes. Outstanding job, guys!

SWIM TEAM TIES ITS BEST RECORD

This past weekend the boys swim team participated in the Macomb County Swim Championships and placed 12th, which is tied for their best showing since the team restarted in 2005. Erik Willis finished in 7th place in the 100 backstroke and qualified for the MISCA meet at Eastern Michigan this upcoming weekend. It is an invitation meet of the best swimmers in the state. The relay team of Charles Debczak, Cole Mockbee, Dylan Neiman, and Erik Willis medaled in the 400 Freestyle Relay, placing 8th. Great job, Panthers!

MORE KUDOS – HOSA TEAMS & CTE STUDENTS!

At the HOSA competition this past weekend, we took one EMS team, Vivienne Labadie and Grsteena Koshaba. They

placed 2nd out of 19 teams. They had to use their skills to successfully and accurately "treat" a sick patient in under 12 minutes as well as take a written exam. They have advanced to the state

competition in Traverse City near the end of April. Congrats also to Megaly

Hernandez and Francis Fuentes who qualified to attend the HOSA state competition as part of the Nursing Assistant program in the CPR/First Aid

category.

More kudos go to Charles Debczak and Matthew Collins, Center Line CTE

students who were honored at the Awards Breakfast at the MISD. We are

proud of your hard work and dedication to the CTE program!

PREPPING FOR SUCCESS!

AFTER SCHOOL READING ROCKETS

Reading Rockets is our literacy grant in action. The driver behind all reading is meaning. Struggling readers have difficulty accessing meaning. Children who struggle with reading begin to read less. The key for a successful support program for struggling readers is to deliberately choose books that match a student's level and to activate the reader’s background knowledge. We should then get children talking about the story, noticing things from pictures and making personal connections to the story. When a student stumbles trying to identify a word, we can then prompt them: ”What would make sense?" "What would sound right?" "What would look right?" We could then try other prompts: "What do you see that can help you?" "What is the first letter?" "Does this look like a word you know?" With Reading Rockets, Academic Coach Mary Binge has designed an intervention environment where students have access to appropriately leveled books and small group instruction. A mini lesson is taught, and students have opportunities to read, talk, and write about reading. The

teacher meets with strategy groups during this intervention time. We have targeted 20 students in second grade. We have started with 10 students for 10 weeks, and then we will enter the next 10 students. We used our Title 1 screener-DIBELS and Fountas and Pinnell Benchmark Assessments along with teacher input to target our students for this After School Literacy Program.

WE APPRECIATE OUR SCHOOL BOARD!

Hal Newnan visited Roose on Wednesday for Board of Education Member Appreciation. He joined us for a Green Team meeting, some Green Team work, and then lunch with the staff. It was a great visit!

ECC Notes

FEELING BUDDIES

Students in Crothers’ K/1 Transitions class engage in the Feeling Buddies curriculum, working with an Oakland Social Work intern who supports this program. This curriculum was provided by a CLPS Educational Foundation grant awarded to social worker Erin Roddis.

IMAGINATION GAMES

Mrs. Keel and Miss Tina's GSRP students spent some time exploring boxes this week. They learned about how people use boxes and how people can use their imagination to make a box into anything they want. The students loved going through our box tunnel, playing inside the boxes, and building tall towers with the boxes.
