A family vacation isn’t possible this summer, but that doesn’t have to limit our ability to make the best of our time together. This summer, as Mary and I refreshed our skills at Canasta, we taught the game to Sarah and Daniel. Warmer weather means firing up the grill to prepare burgers, chicken, salmon, sweet corn or squash and enjoying dinner on our back deck. It was a joy to be surrounded by flowers and see three birds frolicking in the air space between our heads and a large Maple tree in our yard. The constant generosity of the congregation continues to spread joy, not just for ourselves, but for the lives of those we touch. This was evident as Outreach loaded up the juice boxes and bottles for the Hope Center. We may be few in worship, but thanks to your generosity, a whole lot of children will receive a refreshing drink with their bag lunch. Thank you! I am thankful for all this and more. Gratitude brings me to joy. I am thankful for each, and every, reminder that the sun still shines and God still reigns. Praise God! With all the bad news around, what are you happy about? What have you enjoyed in the last month? What strengthened your spirit? Think on those things. Share them with others. Extend the good news. The path ahead is uncertain. What we can be sure of is that God is with us through it all. We read in Paul’s letter to the Romans: “For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Now, that’s something that brings me joy. Is there a scripture or sermon topic you would like me to address sometime soon? A question about God or the church, that you would like an answer for? What is it? Send me a note by mail or email, [email protected]. I’ll let you know when my response will be addressed in a sermon.

On the Journey . . . Rev. Dr. Bob Gross OCC

Oregon Dawn in Spite of the News A poem by Kim Stafford

Before I can get to our statistics — so many stricken, so many dead — I’m summoned by the bird raising a ruckus outside, crows and jays in festive outrage, trill, chirr and aria

from the little brown birds, the mournful dove, the querulous towhee, rusty starlings in their see-saw mutter, and a woodpecker flicker hammering the gutter staccato.

On the porch, I’m assaulted by the merciless scent of trees opening their million flowers, as I inhale the deep elixir of hazel, hawthorn, maple, and oh those shameless cherry trees.

And just when I’ve almost recovered my serious moment, I gasp, helpless to see the full queen moon sidling down through a haze of blossoms.

There is much going on in the world that would weigh us down. COVID restrictions mean we are spending more time at home. That means many of us are spending more time glued to the 24-hour news feed on TV and/or on social media. Stafford’s poem calls us not only to notice the beauty that is all around us, but also to celebrate it.

In the spirit of Stafford’s poem, what are some things you have particularly enjoyed in the last month?

Here are a few things I’ve enjoyed this month:

Whether in-person or online, I am excited about the opportunity to share worship with you. It warms my heart and strengthens my spirit to see you again. I’m thankful that we were able to provide for worship online for 16 weeks, including Maundy Thursday and Easter Sunday. I am also thankful that we can continue online as we return to the sanctuary. Yes, there are still a few kinks in the system, but we’re working together and that, my friends, is a good thing.

I have always enjoyed family time, just the four of us together.

It

was a joy to be surrounded by flowers and see three birds frolicking in the air space between our heads and a large Maple tree in our yard.

The constant generosity of the congregation continues to spread joy, not just for ourselves, but for the lives of those we touch. This was evident as Outreach loaded up the juice boxes and bottles for the Hope Center. We may be few in worship, but thanks to your generosity, a whole lot of

children will receive a refreshing drink with their bag lunch.

We read in Paul’s letter to the Romans:

“For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

Now, that’s something that brings me joy.

Is there a scripture or sermon topic you would like me to address sometime soon? A question about God or the church, that you would like an answer for? What is it? Send me a note by mail or email, [email protected]. I’ll let you know when my response will be addressed in a sermon.

August Notes from Sunday school Mary Ann Proffitt, Christian Ed Director

“Deep Sea Discovery: Diving into the Bible”

As I am writing this, I am getting ready for 3 days of virtual Vacation Bible School, Wilderness Adventure: God Guides & Provides! I am so excited to see the kids via zoom and share the stories of the Bible through crafts, games, music and even snacks! I created this VBS, bought all the supplies and my family and I packed them all up in baggies for each day and put them in

a backpack. Families picked up the bags and are now equipped with backpacks of supplies, explorer hats and canteens! We have to stay hydrated you know.

😊 The preschool/kindergarteners will meet from 6:00 to 6:30 pm and the elementary/middle school students will meet from 7:00 to 8:00 pm. On day one we will Explore God’s Creation, day two we will Seek God’s Direction, and on day 3 we will Trek with Faith! We have 17 students signed up! I will share more during the next newsletter!

I continue to add lessons to the Virtual Sunday School Website each week. We are currently finishing the summer with a 6-week session on Science with Jesus and learning about the Miracles of Jesus! Dr. Hairball and Dr. Lipschtick (aka Mr. and Mrs. Proffitt) perform some fun experiments and share the stories of Jesus miracles through videos, music, crafts, and games.

The link to the Sunday school website is on our church Facebook page and on our church website as well! I appreciate any feedback, as this is a work in progress, and I am learning as I go, so if you have any suggestions on how I can make the site better, please let me know!

The link for this website is noted below. Please check it out and feel free to share with anyone you feel might

enjoy this😊

https://sites.google.com/view/eandrucc-ce/home

I will continue to pray for all our families during this time and hope that you all stay well and value the time you have together. God bless you and may He bring us all together again soon!

Youth Group News Mary Ann Proffitt

The youth group will be meeting this month via Zoom at 7:30 pm on Wednesday, August 12th.

The youth are finishing a Bible

Study called Faith in an Anxious

World where they are learning

how to identify anxiety in

themselves, how to deal with

anxiety in a healthy manner, and

how God can help us with our

anxieties if we remember to put

him first. I am also exploring other possible youth activities and projects we can do virtually until we can meet again in

person. If anyone needs assistance with some yard work,

painting etc. (things that need doing outside), please let me

know as maybe some of our youth could help!

I continue to pray for everyone to stay healthy, patient

and kind during these uncertain times. God’s

blessings and peace to you all!

Women’s Fellowship Sue Manzke, President

As many of you know, the Spaghetti Dinner in March was cancelled. Women’s Fellowship had donated 2 beautiful baskets full of groceries to the raffle. Each one was valued at $75. It

appears some things are expired however, I don’t believe they are sooooo expired that they can’t be used. We don’t want to throw them away! So, the majority of the items are perfect! We are going to open a silent auction to the entire congregation. If you have an interest in them, we are asking that you send a bid to the church office in a sealed envelope marked “Silent Auction”. The two top bidders will receive the baskets. The proceeds will of course go to the Youth of our church. We will keep the Silent Auction open until August 24th!! If you have any questions, please give Sue Manzke a call at 262-510-9215. Thanking you in advance for some BIG BIDS!!!

Tuesday, September 1st at 6:30 pm

Book Club will continue to go virtual and will meet via Zoom! If you’d like to join us, please email or

call Mary Ann Proffitt so she can add you to the Zoom link. We’ll be discussing “All the Ugly and Wonderful Things” by Bryn Greenwood.

“A beautiful and provocative love story between two unlikely people and the hard-won relationship that elevates them above the Midwestern meth lab backdrop of their lives.

As the daughter of a drug dealer, Wavy knows not to trust people, not even her own parents. It's safer to keep her mouth shut and stay out of sight. Struggling to raise her little brother, Donal, eight-year-old Wavy is the only responsible adult around. Obsessed with the constellations, she finds peace in the starry night sky above the fields behind her house, until one night her star gazing causes an accident. After witnessing his motorcycle wreck, she forms an unusual friendship with one of her father's thugs, Kellen, a tattooed ex-con with a heart of gold.

By the time Wavy is a teenager, her relationship with Kellen is the only tender thing in a brutal world of addicts and debauchery. When tragedy rips Wavy's family apart, a well-meaning aunt steps in, and what is beautiful to Wavy looks ugly under the scrutiny of the outside world. A powerful novel you won’t soon forget, Bryn Greenwood's All the Ugly and Wonderful Things challenges all we know and believe about love.”

Make yourself a cup of coffee or your favorite beverage and snack/dessert and join us for an evening of discussion and a lot of fun! Everyone is welcome!

Welcoming Ministry Ron Knutson

"What is a biblical view of social action?"

In recent years Christians have stepped more boldly into the social arena and made their voices heard. Both Christians and non-Christians alike have taken another look at the Bible’s emphasis on helping the poor and speaking up for those who cannot speak for themselves (Leviticus 25:35; Exodus 22:25; James 2:14–16). Whereas a few decades ago religion was thought to be best practiced behind church doors on Sundays, today’s Christians are realizing that was never Jesus’ intent.

One fact that is often overlooked in our post-Christian culture is that most major humanitarian efforts, such as hospitals, orphanages, and universities, were initiated by Christians seeking to make a difference in the world. The abolitionist movements in England and the United States were spearheaded by followers of Christ. Christians are one of the most socially active groups in existence because our Leader, Jesus Christ, taught us to love our neighbors as ourselves (Matthew 22:39). Organizations such as Samaritan’s Purse, Compassion International, Focus on the Family, the A21 Campaign, Open Doors and countless others exist because Christians saw a need and took action.

It’s when Christians use their influence to try to correct moral and ethical issues that the objections begin. Some argue that “separation of church and state” requires all religions to stay out of the public square. Although the idea of separation of church and state has been used to silence the timid, it appears nowhere in the Constitution of the United States, and Christians need not fear that by expressing a biblically based opinion that they are somehow violating a fundamental aspect of our nation’s freedom.

Despite His lifestyle of always doing good (Acts 10:38), Jesus did not come into the world to be a social reformer. His miracles, healing, and teachings were not efforts to right all wrongs or to

permanently relieve suffering. If that had been His purpose in coming, why would He have waited until that period of history? There had been eons of suffering prior to the birth of Christ. If Jesus had come to address social issues, why spend only three years doing so? Why not start at age 12 when He realized He was to be about His Father’s business (Luke 2:49)? Why not avoid crucifixion at age 33 so that He could spend decades reforming?

Jesus’ kindness to the oppressed and ostracized was well-known, but He was clear that His purpose in coming to earth was not humanitarian; it was spiritual. Jesus said, “The Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost” (Luke 19:10). He came to

preach the good news of the kingdom (Mark 1:36–38). He came to fulfill the Law and the Prophets (Matthew 5:17). He came “to give his life as a ransom for many” (Mark 10:45; cf. John 12:27) and “to destroy the devil’s work” (1 John 3:8).

Jesus’ major objective in coming to earth was the salvation of mankind. He brought God to fallen Man (John 10:10; 14:9), and then He died for the sins of the world (Matthew 16:21; 20:28; Mark 8:31; John 10:18). After His resurrection, Jesus left the good news of salvation with a handful of followers who used it to change the world (see Acts 17:6). Earlier, Jesus had told them of the difference they would make in society: “You are the salt of the earth. . . You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven” (Matthew 5:13–16).

Salt brings out the flavor of any food. It also preserves, cleans, and helps heal infection. In order for Christians to be “salt” in the world, we must maintain those distinct properties that come from abiding in God’s Word. When we assimilate the world’s way of thinking and behaving, we lose our saltiness. Our presence on social issues adds balance to an otherwise out-of-control system controlled by Satan (see 2 Corinthians 4:4).

. . . Continued on page 7

Page 7: Evangelical & Reformed United Church of Christ...2020/08/07  · Evangelical & Reformed United Church of Christ, 413 Wisconsin Ave, Waukesha, WI 53186 Page 2 August Notes from Sunday

. . . Welcoming Ministry continued Light banishes darkness. But a light hidden under a basket cannot illuminate anything. When we hide inside our churches and refuse to bring that light into the community, we are spiritually useless. But when, with Holy Spirit boldness, we speak up, run for office, and illuminate social issues with the truth of God’s Word, we are letting His light shine through us. When we see culture praising the murder of unborn children, we must let God’s light shine brightly on the scene and speak His truth in contrast to the neutral words used to defend the indefensible (see Psalm 82:4; Proverbs 24:11). When we learn of poverty-stricken people, we must apply God’s truth to our lives and do what we can to help (Isaiah 58:6–7; James 2:15–17). When injustice rules, we must speak out on behalf of the oppressed, like the Lord Jesus did (Luke 20:46–47; Mark 7:9–13).

Christians should be socially active to the extent God would have them do so. The responsibility of every Christian is to know God’s Word and apply it. James 4:17 says, “If anyone . . . knows the good they ought to do and doesn’t do it, it is sin for them.” Social action will look different for different individuals because God has gifted us differently.

For some, social action will mean holding political office and working to bring truth and justice to a broad arena. For others, social action means using the material wealth God has provided to eliminate hunger and other effects of poverty at home and around the world.

Social action for Christians means we live our faith 24/7 whether at home, at our jobs, or at our places of worship. There is no switch to flip off our “light” whenever we feel like it. As believers, we take the Holy Spirit with us wherever we go (1 Corinthians 6:19–20).

And, because we live in communities and have connections available like never before, God expects us to be salt and light in those communities, flavoring, challenging, and illuminating everywhere we can.

Each of us needs to look in the mirror and see where our faith points us in today's social action arena. Where does your “light” shine? And can you be a difference maker?

. . . Council minutes continued City is considering using the South door as entrance & Wisconsin Avenue door as the exit. Gary G. provided a copy of the floor plan prepared by the City of Waukesha. This particular election is expected to be lower turn out by history. There are already nearly 17,000 absentee ballots already received with the City. Another big question is what wards from around Carroll University will be doing, since it is unknown in what form the campus will be conducting classes. This greatly impacts what kind of traffic there may be at registration table. Gary is able to take care of furniture moving needed for the layout. Gary makes a motion for the City Election Commission to conduct the upcoming August & November elections based on the submitted floor plan & following all necessary COVID precautions. Terry S. seconded. Yes: Sandy A.-P., Terry S., Brian V.B., Nancy W., Scott D., Gary G., George G., Bonnie S. No: Ray L. Motion passes.

10. Deacons: Review online attendance. Deacons did not have the attendance report for the second service but Nancy W. gave a report that the two people that were in attendance were wearing masks. Toni K. surveyed attendees at Sunday’s service visits & stated she did not talk to everyone, but everyone she spoke to felt there should be one service. Discussion was had regarding whether to continue two services. Council members were informally polled and concern was how to communicate to Congregation now that it was decided for the rest of the month. Council meeting set for Tuesday, July 28th at 7 pm via Zoom to decide whether to continue two services.

11. Personnel: is still considering changing its review forms, but reviews will need to be completed before these changes will be made. Pastor will be scheduling reviews for end of July & early August & coordinating with Personnel to take part. Reviews must be done in July so that there would be time to prepare budget for August 31st.

a request from First Presbyterian Church to partner in helping the community. A meeting is being setup.

14. Welcoming Ministry: No Report 15. Stewardship Committee: No Report 16. Membership Committee: No Report 17. Security Committee: No Report 18. Scholarship Committee: The Committee met,

reviewed applications & has submitted the 2020/2021 Scholarships nominations. Scholarship is under budget for this year. Sandy A.-P. made a motion to accept the nominated scholarship recipients. Ray L. seconded. Yes: Sandy A.-P., Bonnie S., Terry S., Brian V.B., Gary G., Ray L., No: none. Abstain: George G., Scott D. & Nancy

W. Also, Nancy W. suggested that the checks should be written to indicate that checks are for a semester as opposed to the entire academic year so there is no confusion with the school’s financial aid office.

19. Benevolence Committee: To meet this month to discuss early distributions & 2021 Budget. There will be a new chair. Question was posed as to whether distribution to causes can be made earlier for COVID. Investment meeting, August 4th, 2020 will follow up with Mark at Edward Jones to see about obtaining funds earlier.

20. Pastoral Relations: No Report. Last meeting 21. was 6/29 to address a concern. Another 22. meeting is set for 7/29. 23. Nominating Committee: No Report 24. Council Size Task Force: No Report. 25. Update on Treasure’s Computer: Brigette is

entering pledges and contributions. Next step is the meet with Barb S. to discuss completion once the data entry is completed.

Old Business: a) Update the bylaws that the Budget Committee must include in its composition a representative from Investment committee and a representative from Stewardship committee. Ray L. presented proposed text for adding to the bylaws. It was suggested that this requirement just be a revision to the formal Committee description that is managed by the President, rather than an amendment to the bylaws. Toni K. as President will be making the change to the official description of the Budget Committee. b) Combination of Benevolence-Outreach-Vitality-HOPE center was tabled until we have an in-person council meeting for Council to have a discussion with the committee members. New Business: Reminder that Budgets are due to Ron Knutson by Monday, August 31st, 2020 Next Opening Prayer: George G. Terry S. motioned to adjourn the meeting. Gary G. seconded. Oral vote. Ayes have it. Meeting adjourned with the Lord’s Prayer. Reports due to Brigette ON or BEFORE August 6, 2020 Next meeting scheduled for Monday, August 10, 2020 at 7:00 pm
