12, International PhD Scholarship in School of Computing, Engineering andPhysical Sciences at UCL, UK

The University of Central Lancashire Announce International PhD Scholarship

in Modeling of the Fluid-Structure Interactions for Aero elastic Characterization of Wind Turbine Blades, UK

Study Subject: Modeling of the Fluid-Structure Interactions for Aero elasticCharacterization of Wind Turbine Blades

Employer: The University of Central Lancashire

Level: PhD

Scholarship Description: Applications are invited for a full-time scholarship available in

the School of Computing, Engineering and Physical Sciences. The scholarship is tenable forup to 3 years for a PhD (via MPhil route) [subject to satisfactory progress] and is open to

international applicants only. UK/EU applicants are not eligible to apply. The scholarship willprovide £15000 towards the cost of the International tuition fee over 3 years.

Manufacturing limitations and operational strains placed on wind turbine blades lead to

fatigue and a shortened working life. The advent of flexible, aero elastic blades (rather thanrigid forms) will offer advantages in increasing fatigue life but challenges in geometrical,

structural and aerodynamic characterization. Wind tunnel trials do not scale up well to reallife blades so that a fundamental understanding of the underlying physics is necessary if

innovative large scale flexible blades are to be modeled successfully.Against this background, the main objectives are:

1. The development of structural dynamic and FEA models for the complete wind turbinerotor or blades that can handle highly nonlinear effects e.g. from flexible blades with

complex laminated composite and composite sandwich skins and webs;2.The development of advanced models on rotor and blade aerodynamics, covering full 3D

CFD rotor models, free wake models and improved BEM type models;3. The advancement of computational mathematical models for the complex fluid-structure

interaction problems that play a critical role in wind-turbine blade design, providing also afundamental tool for a better understanding of the underlying physics;

4. To calculate the torque and thrust on the wind turbine generator under different windspeed and rotor geometry and therefore to predict the material strength needed in different

environment and minimize the damage to the rotor.5. To predict the rotor speed on varying wind speed, rotor geometry, and rotor load. And to

simulate both transient state and steady state motion of the rotor, finally optimize theshape of the rotor blade and therefore maximize the power capacity.

26, International PhD Scholarship in the School of Psychology, University of Central Lancashire, UK

University of Central Lancashire Funded International PhD Scholarship

in Psychological Effects of Rape on Male Survivors, UK

Study Subject: Psychological Effects of Rape on Male SurvivorsEmployer: The University of Central Lancashire

Level: PhD

Scholarship Description: Applications are invited for a full-time scholarship available inthe School of Psychology. The scholarship is tenable for up to 3 years for a PhD (via MPhil

route) [subject to satisfactory progress] and is open to international applicants only. UK/EU

applicants are not eligible to apply. The scholarship will provide £15000 towards the cost of the International tuition fee over 3 years.

The aim of this PhD project is to build on previous work by investigating the psychologicaleffects of rape on men recruited from a range of settings, such as survivor’s Internet

support groups. The first phase of this project will utilise a range of qualitative and

quantitative psychological measures to assess whether issues such as social support, psychological intervention, and individual differences can predict which men suffer the most

detrimental psychological effects after rape. A particular aim of this phase will assess howvictim self-blame hampers recovery, and factors that may influence to what extent the

victim blames himself after rape. Such findings inform treatment services on how best tooffer help to survivors. Later phases of this project might compare male victim responses

with those of female victims; such work, somewhat surprisingly, is lacking, yet is timely andvery publishable. Investigating male rape from an international perspective would also be

extremely publishable.

With China’s leaders calling for ‘innovations to enhance the international competitivenessand influence of Chinese culture’, and the US voicing fears of losing a global information

war, a competition between China and the West for economic and political authority is

starting to emerge, finding expression in a contest for cultural representation. This research initiative will aim to work within the frame of debates on Western

representations of China and on China’s efforts to counter misconceptions of the negativeimpact of its rise, analyzing these new cultural contestations in the context of the changing

global power dynamics. From a broad overview of Western and Chinese culturalrepresentations of China, as it has emerged from subordination after 1949 to rise as an

international power in the world today, the research will focus especially on suchrepresentations in Western and Chinese film/TV output since the 1990s. Highlighting

particular case studies, the work will explore continuities/discontinuities in Orientalistreassertion and Chinese responses.

52, 2 PhD Scholarships – New Environmental Governance: Examining newapproaches to governing climate change and groundwater, Australia

The Legal Governance Concentration of Research Excellence (CORE)

the Macquarie Law School Macquarie University, call for Scholarship applicationfor two full time Macquarie University Research Excellence PhD Scholarships.

Study Subject: LawEmployer: Macquarie University

Level: PhD

Scholarship Description: Two outstanding doctoral candidates are sought to undertake

studies in either of the projects below. Both projects are focused on novel forms of governance that seek to address two of the greatest environmental challenges facing

Australia and the international community: climate change and scarce groundwaterresources.

Climate Project: Given the continuing failure of governments and multilateral treaties to

deliver effective climate outcomes, this project investigates an emerging, but potentially

powerful new ‘actor’ in climate governance regimes both in Australia and globally. Thesenew actors take the form of climate change civil society movements (eg ‘Get Up’, ‘1 Million

Women’, ‘350.org’ and ‘1010’). The project examines the circumstances under which thesenew movements can shape law, policy and practice (eg direct action mechanisms, lobbying

and partnerships) to produce effective and legitimate climate outcomes. The project aims todevelop principles to guide these new movements to better influence climate law regimes

and deliver improved climate outcomes.

Groundwater Project: This project responds to the recent call for a ‘water reform revolution’

to empower communities to collaboratively manage water buy-back and entitlements inAustralia. The project will examine the circumstances under which collaborative forms of

groundwater management are likely to be effective both as a standalone governanceapproach and as a component of wider legal and regulatory systems. It aims to provide

necessary guidance and prescription to policy makers so they can deliver this ‘revolution’

and mobilise collaborative groundwater governance to achieve improved environmentaloutcomes for Australia.

The successful applicant will join an innovative team of researchers at Macquarie Law Schoolwho are undertaking interdisciplinary research on contemporary issues related to legal

governance and public policy.

These scholarships are open to both domestic and international applicants, although onlyone is currently available for an international student.
