How effective is the combination of your main product

and ancillary texts?

Page 2: Evaluation question

Introduction Along with our main product we each had to design two ancillary products which related to the main piece. We each had to create our own individual ancillary products which in some way related to both each other and the main video. I created a digipak for the album and a magazine poster which, if it was real, would be used to promote its release. The digipak would have to be related to the style of album Jake Bugg created initially without being too similar from it. The poster has to relate to my digipak as it is meant to be advertising my idea of it. Both have to relate back to my main music video and I feel I have done that but how effective have I done this

Digipak This is my digipak design I gave it a canvas texture and a pencil shading look. It gives the digipak an artistic feel and sets a particular mood, usually seen with an acoustic/folk music. I took the design idea from one of my favourite artists, Passenger. Both his Whispers and Whispers II albums have a similar design layout. This artist is not too dissimilar from Jake Bugg and so I took inspiration from it.

Magazine Advert This is the magazine advert I have created to advertise my design of Jake Bugg’s album. It has the same picture as the main cover of the digipak and the same pencil shading pattern too. The only difference between the advert and the digipak is the colour contrast. Because this is an advert a brighter contrast of colour would serve its primary use; to attract and promote the product to the consumer. This allows it to advertise the artist on display whilst also linking it stylistically to the digipak.

Ancillaries

Side-by-side the similarities between the 2 are definitely noticeable. The photos, texture and pattern are identical with only the colour having any difference. The photos were chosen as they are ambient shots of the main set location of performance and the majority of the narrative, with the main picture being centred on the artist more specifically his guitar. This is important as this allows the ancillary pieces to link to the main music video as the artist in the picture is the main artist in the sequence.

Music Video

The music video is an emotive video that is mostly narrative based. The artist is also the main character and the center of the video. The same character is also in the pictures on the digipak and magazine advert. He is wearing the same code of dress in the video as in the two ancillaries. The guitar is another item that links all three of my products together is it is involved in all 3 of them.

Effective?

Each practical product works effectively for their own individual purpose, whether that be advertisement or the product itself. But when the three are combined together they create a synergetic product which contribute to the overall appeal of the product. Due to their design and style each connect to each other and catalyse each other's function. The Album would be the first thing to be produced and by imitating the front of that in the magazine advert but in a more attractive and vibrant way will increase appeal to the consumer. The music video shows the artist within it advertising him as well as the song and because he is wearing the same items of clothing in the video as well as in the ancillary products. Because he of the style of the artist is similar in the music video as on the digipak cover thus advertising further. Overall each product has a certain purpose to one another and together increase its appeal to the consumer.
