Page 1: Evaluation question

In what ways does your media product

use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real

media products?

Page 2: Evaluation question

For my front cover I researched United reggae magazine to look at the types of conventions used in their magazine.

I feel that my magazine challenges conventions of music magazines in general because my page is very busy, Bright bold colours, and my subject is not making eye contact with the reader however I decided when I saw the united Reggae magazine covers that the image can still be powerful and connote my genre without making eye contact. Much like the existing magazine cover I used a ticker tape at the bottom of my page to contrast with the page and stand out to the

reader. Unlike the United Reggae magazine my page is full of bright colours and bold text to connote my genre where as United reggae magazine use dark colours such as greens and blues and they do not have many cover lines on their pages.

Unfortunately I could not find a Reggae magazine contents page so I am using an NME magazine contents page to compare my media product.

Unlike my front cover and my Double paged spread I think that this page is very organised and not very busy, Most contents pages much like the one on the left are busy and difficult to read so I decided to challenge this by making my page a lot easier to navigate with just one main image and a smaller image of the subject from the front cover in the bottom corner. I also decided that to make my pages have more variety I would have a different story being shown on my contents page to the one talked about on my front cover, I feel this is a risky thing to do because it means that I am trying to work with 2 different stories, but overall I believe it has paid off well. I chose to use very bright colours on my page so that it connotes my genre and stand out to the reader, I also made my subject look at the camera to make the image more powerful as on my front cover the subject was looking away, Mush like NME magazine I have used a wide range of colours and fonts for my cover lines.

Unfortunately I could not find an existing reggae magazine with an example of a double page spread so I am using the well known music magazine ”Q” to compare my media product.

From looking at this existing double page spread I can see that in comparison to mine the forms and conventions are similar. Both media products use bright bold colours to stand out to the reader, They also have contrasting colours between the subject and the background to make them look as though they are

jumping off the page at you. At the start of the body of the text Q magazine has used a very large letter D to make it stand out and show where the story starts, There is also variety in the fonts which I tried to use in my media product to make it look like an “Organised mess on the page”. The different between my product and Q magazine is that my title is written in fancy bright coloured writing which I feel makes it stand out against the background where as Q magazine uses dark dull colours for the writing which contrasts with the subject on the page but blends with the background,
