Evaluation3 - What kind of media
institution might distribute your media product and why?

At the beginning of this magazine project, I looked at various Publishing Houses, finding out what magazines they produce and
where they produce from.
Looking back on my Publishing Houses research, I have decided that IPC Media was the most suitable one that I could choose to work with my magazine. IPC sells over 350 million magazines a
week.
IPC Media has published some of the biggest magazines on the market in Britain today, such as TV Times, Nuts, World Soccer,
but most importantly in this case, NME.NME was one of the magazines that the big Britpop bands, such as Oasis, Pulp and Blur, gained a lot of exposure to the public eye from. Those bands concerned garnered huge critical acclaim, and
NME itself had its biggest average monthly sales in its history.
The fact that this publisher helped create one of the biggest music genres create a huge following was a good reason into me
picking it as my publisher. The fact that NME is their only ‘big’ music magazine also gives my magazine a chance, added with the
fact that there is a gap in the market for a Britpop magazine.

I do think that my magazine would fit into the market because there is virtually no magazines based on the Britpop/Madchester genre. This gap in the market,
coupled with the fact that a lot of the bands from that era are beginning to reform, gives my magazine an
advantage at getting those readers wanting to look at their favourite bands from the 1990s again.
NME (New Musical Express)Doesn’t really have one major
genre focus - it covers all of them, with the possible exception of classical.
Q is in a similar vain to NME, but likely also excludes Death Metal and genres of a similar
tone, mainly aiming for the big genres, Rock and Pop.
Rolling Stone mainly has a focus on Rock in comparison to the rest of the music business.
It does feature many of the other genres quite frequently.
It also seems to look back a lot, focusing on older artists such as The Beatles, Rolling Stones,
Bob Dylan, etc.
Kerrang! is a magazine that focuses on a certain audience, like my magazine. Unlike my mag though, Kerrang focuses
on Hard Rock and Metal, a much smaller audience than
that of NME, Q or Rolling Stone.
Smash Hits! Magazine was a magazine which seemed to
have a heavy amount of pop music, as well as gossip on those artists. It was aimed mainly at females, with the
additions of gossip and majority female artists
featuring.
