SYNERGY

• Synergy basically means the whole I greater than the sum of its parts. It is a strategy of combining and joining together directly related areas of entertainment. I have used ancillary texts and synergy in my main product by forging together all components of my work into one area of entertainment (My Film). I have done this because it is better to have one whole advertisement, rather than loads of singular advertisments that are hard to keep track of.

• The advertising production for harry potter uses synergy as it helps advertise and sell the product. By looking at the tree items of advertisement shown in the slides before, you can see they all have common features. An example of this would be the font used on the title, as it is the same in all 3. This technique is used in order to create a universal recognition for the film and enable people to relate to every form of advertisement. If the fonts and themes were different then the audience would become confused as to which film is being advertised.

HOW HAVE I CREATED SYNERGY?

• I have created between my ancillary texts and trailer in many different ways. For example font used, character shots, color scheme and persuasive writing. I will go on to explain these now.

CHARACTERS

• In my main products I made sure that I only exposed the audience to two main characters. I have done this in order to minimize the amount of changes from every production. Reducing the changes means the film will become more recognizable to the audience. This then in turn prevents them from being confused at to which film is being advertised. Another reason I have done this is to increase the chances of the audience creating a relationship to the character and increasing the chances of them going to watch the film.

• In all 3 productions of this character is shown. This lets the audience know that this character will be significant in the film. The fact he is seen with a cigar in both posters emphasizes the danger and evilness of the character. Adding props to the character and making him seem this way will automatically tell the audience that he is the evil guy. I feel my main product and ancillary texts are effective in this way as they let the audience have a relationship with the character and enable them to make pre-judgments as to what they thing his role will be in the film. This then persuades the audience to go and watch the film in order to know what the film is about.

FONT

• After researching into many different fonts, and which ones were most in trend, I obtained an idea of what font works well with different themes. In my production I used times new roman as my main font to create my title for my film in. Times new roman looks authentic and classy, which I think represents the gangster theme well. I also capitalized all of the letters in order to make the words more straight and aligned. I did this in order to create a higher aesthetic appeal of the poster and it works with the theme and genre of the film. By using this font in all productions meant that it became recognizable to the viewer. I conducted a poll with in my class asking whether they thought using the same font in all productions raises the effectiveness of the advertisement as a group of products. This question was asked to 15 people with in my class and 90% said yes.

IF I WERE TO DO THE PRODUCTIONS AGAIN• If I was to do my production and ancillary texts again I would consider researching and

trying out creating my own different font maybe with in adobe illustrator, as this would be unique and original. Making my own unique font would mean it would be recognised more easily and it could also furthermore be used by other people. This is a very effective advertisment techniqu and has been used in things such as Star Wars.

COLOR

• The choice of color is an essential aspect in all 3 productions because it is one of the key links the audience can make between them. When making and designing my productions I decided to use the color scheme of red, white and black. I chose these colors because, with in gangster films black and whites are extremely popular as it is associated with film noir. The colors are meaningful to the audience and make them express certain feelings. According to stereotypes with in the thriller genre red represents blood, danger, violence etc. These feelings allow the viewer to make prejudgments about the film and the characters. These colored are also continued with in the title headings in the trailer. r

FEEDBACK FROM MY TARGET AUDIENCE • “after watching and viewing all three productions I felt a sense of crisis and danger. This

was because of the bright reds shown with in the poster, as they’re eye catching and prominent. The color scheme I saw began to make me think about what the film could possibly be about, and made me want to watch it more. I believe the trailer and its ancillary texts are very useful in representing what the film is about.

• This quote was helpful in showing me that I had correctly combined all three productions through the use of my ancillary texts.

LIGHTING

• The lighting with in my poster is quite dark and dreary, similarly with my trailer. I have used dark colors in order to furthermore incorporate the idea of danger into the audiences minds. Also on my magazine front cover, I used bright colors with dark shadows behind as, it shows a mug shot of the character and I wanted it to be detailed and expressionless. Lighting is important in order to make the film seem either happy, scary, or thrilling. Too much darkness with in a trailer or poster would suggest the film may be a horror.

ACTORS NAMES• In both versions of my poster I have mentioned the main popular actors starring in my

film. I added this feature into my poster as I found out my target audience are more inclined to watch it if they know there is popular actors that have before created other good movies, in it. Placing the actors names on there can intrege people outside of your target audience as they might have liked the actor from a previous film that might not have been the same genre as the film you have made.

OVERALL VIEW

• Overall I believe that my poster, trailer and magazine front cover all work well and are effective in gathering the audiences attention and getting the to come and watch the film. I think all the ancillary texts with in my production work well, and the audience feedback also helps me to gain a understanding over what is good and bad.
