Evaluation Question 1In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

The Todorov’s theory is present within our own mystery thriller this is because our thriller shows equilibrium. There is peace as the children were getting ready for bed. They are brushing their teeth together and are having an argument over the mouth wash. After this there is some evidence of disequilibrium as there is an unknown in black who makes itself present, scaring the kids and taking little boy. This is also shown through the newspaper reports and the mother running up the stairs after hearing her son scream.

Using Theories

This could also suggest that the movie will sabotage Todorov's theory as equilibrium the boy is being taken away may not be restored because the storyline doesn't continue in order for the audience to see what will happen next.

Within our media product we also sabotage Prop’s character theory; as the all the characters portrayed in our media product cannot be categorized into his different 'functions'. The characters are not portrayed to be princess, helper or a hero within our media product. Therefore, there is a slight compliance with the theory as an innocent boy is being stolen and he was a gift taken away from his mother which can be linked with the 'Orpheus' in 'Kate Domaile’s theory.

Furthermore Levi Strauss's theory of binary opposites was also present within our media product. Conventions of the mystery genre in my media product challenge and support the mystery genre through the costume, sound and effects used in the opening.

However, we used dark in order to convey what was going on in our mystery thriller as we used the lights within the bathroom to flicker, in order to convey an atmosphere of panic.

There are many different codes and conventions which used in our opening thriller. We challenge and supported mystery thriller through Mise-en-scene by making sure that we had dark settings and creepy sound for our film. This is also in correspondence with the convention of low lighting within mystery thriller films.

Use of Codes and Conventions

We used lamps and torches in order to create an artificial light. The low lighting that we used also created a dark atmosphere and made our media product eerie.
