Materials and Methods The experiment was conducted at the TAMU Agricultural Research and Extension Center at Beaumont in 2000 and was designed as a randomized complete block with 23 treatments and four replications. Plot size was 45 ft x nine rows (30 inches between rows). Treatments are described in the tables. On 10 Apr, plots were sprayed with 2.0 qt/acre Roundup Ultra for pre-plant weed control. On the same day, plots were fertilized with 0-40-60 (N-P 2 O 5 - K 2 O) lb/acre. Immediately after planting, plots were sprayed with 1½ qt/acre Roundup Ultra and 3.0 pt/acre Squadron. Plots were planted with DP7375 RR (Roundup Ready) soybeans at about eight viable seeds per linear foot on 15 May. Soil type was Levac silt loam. In addition, plots were cultivated as needed early in the growing season. Soybeans emerged on 21 May to produce an excellent stand. On 18 Jul, plots were sprayed with 1½ pt/acre Roundup Ultra. On 7 Sep when populations of Lepidoptera were beginning to increase to threshold levels, plots were sprayed with treatment insecticides. Soybeans were R5/6 (pod-fill) at time of treatment applications and defoliation in the plots was less than 10%. Insecticides were applied with a two-person, 23.5 ft swath (13 nozzles) spray rig pressurized with CO 2 . Nozzle tip size was 80015 and nozzles were equipped with 50 mesh screens. Final spray volume was 21.6 gpa. Conditions were clear and calm at time of treatment applications which began at sunrise. One day before treatment applications, plots were sampled for arthropods with a 15 inch diameter sweep net. Ten consecutive sweeps were taken in each plot. Arthropods from each sample were transferred to a plastic bag which was frozen. At a later date, contents of the bags were thawed and counted. One, 5, 11 and 22 days after treatment applications, plots were sampled as described above. Soybean stage of growth was also noted and recorded for each sample date. On 26 and 27 Oct, the middle four rows of each plot were harvested with a small plot combine. Yields were adjusted to 13% moisture. Seed quality was also determined for each plot using a visual rating scale from 1 to 5 (1 = excellent seed quality; 5 = very poor). In addition, seed size for each plot was determined by counting the number of seeds in a 454 g sample. Arthropod count data were transformed using x +.5 and all data analyzed by 2-way ANOVA and DMRT.

Results Lepidoptera Velvetbean caterpillar (VBC) densities were relatively low in the experiment (Table 1). However, all rates of experimental (except the lowest rate), Karate Z, Tracer, Asana XL, Lannate LV and Orthene 90S gave excellent initial and long-lasting control of VBC. Intrepid 240 SC, Dimilin 2L and Steward SC treatments were slower acting than the other treatments. Green cloverworm and looper populations were too low for meaningful evaluations (Tables 2 and 3). Stink bugs. Stink bug populations were too low in the experiment for meaningful evaluations (Tables 5-7). Threecornered alfalfa hopper. No significant differences in threecornered alfalfa hopper (TCAH) populations among treatments were observed until 11 days after treatment applications (Tables 8-10). Experimental at the highest rate tested, Karate Z at the highest rate tested, and Orthene 90S at both rates tested significantly reduced TCAH populations 11 days after treatment applications (Table 10). Miscellaneous arthropods. Populations of miscellaneous insects were too low for meaningful evaluations (Table 11-16). Spider populations appeared unaffected by any of the treatments (Table 17). Yield and seed quality. Due to a severe drought in 2000 and relatively low damaging insect populations in the experiment, yields were low and not significantly different among treatments (Table 18). Seed quality and size were similar for all treatments (Tables 19 and 20).
