Brief

The brief from diabetes UK was that we were to make a 3 minute or shorter film with the intention of educating people on diabetes. Our film didn’t exactly educate but it showed the severity of diabetes and what can happen if people with diabetes don’t take care of themselves. The target audience was young people in secondary and college, this made filming easier because we could relate to the audience making the message very easy to put across.

Original idea

Our original idea was to recreate the THINK advert in which a motorcyclist crashes and talks you through his dying. Our plan was to have an actor walking through college and then to fall and have a hypo. We were then going to zoom in their face and back out to show them standing next to their own body explaining what had happened and how to prevent it. But we eventually changed the plan due to our actor not being present on the day of filming.

Planning

Our planning didn’t really help due to the absence of the actor as well as our change of plan during the production. I feel that if we had stuck to the plan and had our actor then our film and the production of the film would have gone a lot smoother. I also believe that if we had all crew present then the call sheets would have been useful but when the actor wasn’t there, the call sheets were quite pointless.

Filming

Our main strengths in filming were the movement and framing, where we had a point of view shot that showed movement quite well as well as when we framed Elly behind Jermaine while he was on the floor. We did this deliberately to show her reaction to him being on the floor. Our weaknesses were mainly teamwork where we couldn’t decide as a group what to do or how to do it. But we overcame that by leaving it up to Eugene.

Editing

I feel that the editing was our main strength overall as our feedback was mainly positive comments on how good the editing was. For example the fluidity of Jermaine walking through the door and the effects put on Jermaine as he starts to feel ill. But I feel that we could have added more sound or even a soundtrack to give more effect and make the walking into college a bit easier to watch.
