Vacuum Food Waste System
6 | Evac
Evac has developed a new-generation food waste collecting system which is based on vacuum technology. Food waste is ground in the galley through a macerator feeding sta-tion (MFS). The ground food waste is then directed to its own separate holding tank. The system has a patented vacuum transport system to avoid blockages and to transport the waste through the piping network effectively. Evac recommends the subsequent dis-charge of the waste into the shore harbour facilities.
Food waste is one of the most difficult forms of waste to handle onboard as it biodegrades quickly and contributes to odours. Marine ecosystems in coastal waters are fragile and can be adversely affected by the discharge of food wastes due to the high concentration of nutrients.
Historically a simple disposer has been installed under the sink in the galley and no atten-tion has been paid to where the ground food waste has been discharged. By treating the food waste where it is produced, minimum transport and work for the crew can be easily achieved as well as increasing the level of hygiene in the galley.
Food waste and black or grey water is not technically defined as sewage and may not be discharged into a vessel's treatment plant. The reason for this is that it will contribute to increased levels of BOD (Biochemical Oxygen Demand) and the sewage treatment plant might fail to treat the sewage in accordance with IMO requirements. Furthermore, food waste should not be stored in tanks containing oily wastes as such actions can result in the faulty operation of the oily-water separation equipment and cause sanitary problems for the crew.
Food waste and food-contaminated waste are strictly regulated ashore under health rules concerning ‘animal-by-products’ and will be subject to quarantine requirements.

Safe return to harbour and toilet system- Just a question of rules, but also of satisfaction
Mein Schiff 3, a TUI Cruises new building in STX Finland, 2500 passenger and 1000 crew, ship will be delivered in May 2014. To ensure SOLAS and best vacuum security, 6 OnlineMax 175 DF units will be installed.
The Evac vacuum tank is a good solution for large cruise vessels where high capacity and stable vacuum level is needed. With up to 6 cubic vacuum tanks the unit provides lot of buffer capacity to peak hours.
New SOLAS requirements have created new challenges for vacuum toilet systems. A particular issue is that many people view the amount of toilets needed in relation to the minimum SOLAS states they should have. But is it wrong to look at this as an obligation? Properly working toilet systems are essential for customer satisfaction in passenger vessels. Problems can arise in the form of an unhappy customer quickly becoming an ex-customer. For this reason, it is sensible policy for the ship owner to ascertain that as many toilets as possible are in full working order, not just the legal minimum.
Evac offers a wide range of vacuum toilets for different applications, especially for cruise vessels.

The Evac OnlineMax and OnlineMax DF system provides high capacity with high efficiency while leaving a small footprint. The small sized unit is easy to install in several compartments and as it's fitted with a high sewage discharge head it’s not a problem to install at a distance from the treatment plants for sea /shore discharge. It's Also an excellent choice for upgrading an existing system. With the Evac OnlineMax you can easily increase your vacuum capacity and improve your energy efficiency.

Special areas, special requirements:S. A. Agulhas II
The Evac Standard MBR pro-vides a wide range of units serv-ing up to 750 people. The units are based on the latest environ-mentally friendly technology and have a low lifetime cost. With its high effluent quality Evac MBR is the clear choice not only for spe-cial vessels, but for every ship owner looking for sustainable de-velopment.
S. A. Agulhas II is a South African icebreaking polar supply and research ship for scientific research and supply operations in the Antarctic. The ship was built in 2012 by STX Finland and has two MBR 120 C treatment units with a combined vacuum serving over 100 vacuum toilets; the units will handle all the ship's black and grey water. Additionally, a sludge treatment unit for lowering sludge levels is installed on the vessel.
Around the world there are many special areas which are highly sensitive to pollution. For this reason it is crucial to take care of your discharges. Evac standard MBR sewage treatment plants provide the best effluent quality that secures the natural biological stability of water courses.
