Preparedness to generate the largest accessible collection of human, animal and plant virus in the World• An on going process to collect virus strains

• Extraction, characterisation, amplification, quality controls to generate a unique collection of virus strains

• An highly efficient logistical platform• Lesson from past experience:

• MERS-CoV that emerged in Saudi Arabia: PCR assay designed in less than 2 weeks, 300 RT-PCR kits sent in 151 laboratories in 54 countries

• Zika virus epidemic in Sout America: EVA only collection having Zika virus strains available, 600 products distibuted w/w

• Dedicated research teams to be quickly mobilized• Yellow fever re-emerging in South America: design of a new multiplex RT-PCR to differenciate

between vaccine and american wild-type YFV

• Innovative strategic developments of tool• Including new reverse genetics methods, access to uncultivable virus collection and to

patrimonial virus collection, primers and probes lyophilized ready to use reagents, armoredRNA for room temp storage….

Implication in the COVID-19 outbreak

20/05/2020 3

• From January 13, 2020 onwards• Publication of a new RT-PCR assay on the WHO Technical Interim Guidelines• Products available on EVA-G web-based catalogue

• Positive controls for PCR detection• Specificity panel for PCR assay including RNA from 5 viruses (SarsCov,

MERSCoV, nl63, oc43, 229e)• Set of PCR reagents including primers, probes and positive control (armored

RNA) designed to allow their shipment at room temperature. They are proposed more specifically for shipment to Southern countries (Africa and South America).

• 4 SARS-CoV2 strains (live or inactivated) including the German, the Italian, the Slovakian, the French strains. Our partners NIID (Japan) and VIDRL (Australia) should promote soon their respective COVID-19 strains in the EVA-G catalogue.

Long term sustainability of RI’s?• To integrate National and International health organizations

• EVA an active party in the GOARN (WHO)• Tight links with OIE and FAO

• To extend the geographical impact of the EVA network• Establishment of robust collaboration initiatives• Organization of training programmes in Low Income country to create local virus collections• Inclusion of the Nagoya protocole rules to implement the conditions for a benefit sharing

• To contribute to the establishment of an international cooperation of infrastructures for rapid responses to epidemic• EVA in involved in discussion to improve the coordination of the RI’s to address specific outbreak

• To create the conditions for sustainable sources of funding independant of call for projects• Amongst it deliverables : to determine of a legal status suitable for an international organization

including EU-countries and non Eu-countries
