EVA YOUNG MEMBERS GROUP POSTER OR ABSTRACT PRIZE

Sponsored by Interpath, this prize is open to Young Members of EVA who produce a poster for presentation, or present the best clinical or research paper at the combined ANZCVS / EVA abstract session at the Bain Fallon Memorial Lectures.

The poster or presentation may cover any topic in equine veterinary science, and be research or clinically orientated. The prize for the best Young Member Poster is a grand perpetual trophy, an individual engraved glass memento and a cheque for $500.

Sponsored by CEVA Animal Health, this prize is open to all veterinarians, with the qualifications set out below, who present the best clinical or research paper at the combined ANZCVS / EVA abstract session. Candidates must hold or be 2 years into a specialist qualification (Fellowship or Diplomate of a Specialist Veterinary College) or advanced research degrees (for example, MVSc, PhD, DVSc). The topic may include any clinical or research project exclusively involved with horses.

3 BEN CUNNEEN AND ALISTER RODGERS AWARD – OUTSTANDING YOUNG MEMBER

Sponsored by Dr David Lovell and 4CYTE horse, this award will be given to an outstanding individual in the Young Members Group, who has contributed to EVA and demonstrated dedication to clinical practice, as well as meritorious industry and community involvement. This award honours two of our EVA colleagues who died tragically from Hendra virus in 2008 and 2009 respectively.

The prize for the Cunneen-Rodgers award is a perpetual trophy, an individual engraved glass memento and a cheque for $500.

Keynote speakers

Dr Paul Robinson qualified as a veterinarian in 1999 from the University of Queensland. After working as a junior equine vet in South Australia, he then completed a 3-year residency training program at Michigan State University in the USA and became a specialist in Equine Surgery in 2007 after passing the American College of Veterinary Surgeons board examination. His professional interests include soft tissue and orthopaedic surgery and the use of low-field MRI in horses. He has published a number of journal articles and has spoken at international veterinary meetings in the USA, Australia and Hong Kong. Paul is transitioning into the role of Head of Veterinary Clinical Services at the Hong Kong Jockey Club where he has worked for the last 6 years.

Dr. Brian Gilger received his veterinary degree from The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio. Dr. Gilger joined the faculty at North Carolina State University in 1995 and is now a Professor of Ophthalmology at NC State University. He is board certified in Veterinary Ophthalmology and by the American Board of Toxicology. Dr. Gilger has been President of the American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists, President of the International Equine Ophthalmology Consortium, Chair of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO) Animals in Research Committee, and is a Fellow of ARVO. In 2017, he was recognized as a Distinguished Alumnus of the Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine and in 2018, he was awarded the Huffmann Leadership Award by North Carolina State University and The AVMA Clinical Research Award.

Dr. White is Professor & Chief of Service, Dermatology at the School of Veterinary Medicine at UC Davis. He has worked as a veterinary dermatologist for 3 decades, becoming a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Dermatology in 1983. A graduate of UC Davis, he did his internship and residency at Davis as well. He has held faculty positions at Tufts University School of Veterinary Medicine and Colorado State University College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, before joining the School of Veterinary Medicine at University of California at Davis as a full Professor in 1998. He has also been staff dermatologist at SPCA Angell Memorial Animal Hospital in Boston, twice a sabbatical professor at the Ecole National Vétérinaire de Nantes, France, and a Clinical Teaching Locum at the Atlantic Veterinary College on Prince Edward Island, Canada.
