    Conclusion from Market Research

    Numbers dont work

    - 1284 on every PC, Notebook, and Printer

    - Can not trademark a number

Slow growth of Digital Video slowing i.LINK

    - DVI and i.LINK are equally recognized

Despite enormous USB marketing budget, FireWire is

almost as well know as USB

    - FireWire more well known before USB 2.0 launch- It is a name people remember

If you want to use i.LINK that is OK

    - Good name for Japanese market

    - Pretty good name for Audio/Video market

    FireWire is a great choice

Progress of 1394 in Home Network

No technology is in the clear lead for Home Networking

Everything you want to network has 1394 in it

    - PC, Peripherals, and A/V Every Home Networking Trend is Supported by 1394

    - TCP/IP over 1394 (weve been doing this for years)

    - CAT5 Cable (weve been doing this for years)

    - Wireless InStat says that Wireless is the clearest trend Wireless Working Group for 1394 over 802.11

The Home Network is an A/V Network

Progress of 1394 in Home Network

According to InStat No one installs a home network to share

a printer between two PCs. Home networks are installed to

share A/V data. According to CEA, The Home Network is an A/V Network

A/V Networking is more complicated than sending bits

    - 1394 has the QOS required for real-time High Definition Video

    - 1394 has the protocols for A/V networking

    - 1394 was designed to carry multiple video streams

    - 1394 is the A/V Network

Other Home Networking technologies will require 2 to 3 years

to do what 1394 does today.

    What about DVI?

Quality is not any better- A/V comes into the STB compressed

    - No benefit in uncompressing in the STB rather than TV Magazine articles say Hollywood will charge each time

consumer watches video recorded on STB- Applies to all STBs with HDDs including TiVO and ReplayTV- Consumers Rights Groups in the USA are complaining

    - This is a big threat to DTV industry Can not do home networking with DVI

MPEG Decoder in many devices increases cost- Better to decode in TV only Killing the market for DVCR and Recordable DVD TV makers are dropping DVI and adding 1394

    What Connector to use?

The 6 pin carries power but the 4 pin does not

The Dell Latitude x200 Notebook is first Wintel with 6 pin

    - Apple uses the 6 pin in all their notebooks- All Wintel notebooks follow the Sony 4 pin model

    - Dell uses the 6 pin to power the DVD/CDRW There is no other connector on the Dell DVD/CDRW One less cable across the desk top Able to power external DVD/CD on airplane or in car

Sony realized their mistake with the 4 pin

    - Needed to supply power to external DVD

    - Failed to realize the obvious and created the 4 + 2

The 6 pin versus the 4 pin

    What Connector to use?

    The Sony 4 + 2

  • 8/4/2019 EuroShow 1394

    23/33

    What Connector to use?

Can also power a 2.5 inch HDD off 6 pin connector

The 4 pin is a bad connector

    - Looks too much like the small USB connector- Hard to align

    - Takes me 3 or 4 tries to plug it in

    - Must have clear view in good light

    - Can not plug it in blind

    - Comes out if not careful

The 6 pin is a good connector

    - Looks different than the USB connector

    - Can plug it in the first time, every time

    - Can plug it in blind

The 6 pin versus the 4 pin

One cable powers DVD and small HDD

Should be able to charge battery powered devices

    - iPOD from Apple does this- Business Traveler carries many devices

    - Needs to have power supply for notebook

    - Would be nice to recharge digital camera, PDA, etc. over 6

    pin connector from notebook

    - More power than USB 2.0- If Dell could power a DVD/CD ReWriteable off a USB 2.0

    cable, they would

You are putting 1394 in the notebook anyway. Make the

    most of it.

Better for the business travelerCan leave power supplies in the office
