what is the big ben?Big Ben is the name of the great bell, the biggest bell within the clock tower of the Palace of Westminster at the Houses of Parliament in London. Big Ben rings out striking each hour on the hour. Big Ben is often wrongly used to name the clock (which is the biggest 4 face chiming clock in the world). Big Ben, nicknamed after Sir Benjamin Hall, a popular member of Parliament of the time and commissioner of works, is now more commonly known as the complete clock and tower as well as the bell.

Big ben was cast at Whitechapel bell foundry, in east London, on April 10th 1858. it took him two weeks to cool, and once he was ready, they transported him to Westminster in a horse drawn carriage. Londoners lined the rout and cheered as the bell went past.

Where is the big ben made, and when was it made?

Who built the big ben, and when was it finished?• Big Ben was designed by Edmund

Beckett Denison. And it was built by Messrs.' E.J. Dent and Sir Charles Barry drew the designs, and architect Edward Pent and his son Frederick Pent built it.

• Charles Barry, chief architect turned to Augustus Plugin to help design the tower and clock dials in his neo-gothic style. It was plugin's last major work before he went mad then died at the aged of 40. Charles Barry also died as it was near completion. The tower took 16 years to build and was finished and working in 1859. In 2009 it celebrated 150 years.

Why was the big ben created?• The big ben was created because The old Palace

of Westminster was destroyed by fire on October 16, 1834. In 1844, Parliament decided that the new buildings for the Houses of Parliament, by then under construction and designed by Sir Charles Barry, should have a clock tower. The actual mechanism itself was designed by Edmund Beckett Denison and his design later became standard in all large clocks. It took 2 years to build this new design and 5 years being tested in Dent's workshop before being fitted in the tower. Denison was also influential in the casting of the Great bell.

• The first casting of the bell was destroyed as it cracked up after being shipped from the foundry in Stockton-On-Tees, but the second bell cast at the London Whitechapel foundry continues to be used today even though it also cracked shortly after fitting.

• The clock with all the bells were working for the first time in September 1859 and by then it had it's name, Big Ben. It was named after the popular parliamentarian of the time, Sir Benjamin Hall.
