SET-PLAN IMPLEMENTATION
The Steering Group of the SET-Plan in its last meeting on October 28th, 2010 agreed to speed-up the
execution of activities of the Implementation Plans (IPs) of the European Industrial Initiatives (EIIs). It was
decided to collectively identify the possibilities for launching joint actions between Member States and/or
Member States and the European Commission.
The mapping exercise carried out through this questionnaire builds upon this decision of the Steering
Group. It aims to identify topics for leveraging best ongoing efforts with complementary joint actions, as
prioritized by the Implementation Plans. In this phase the mapping will focus on projects and activities with
a total budget higher than 1 M€.
We trust that you also consider the success of this exercise important for the immediate implementation of
the SET-Plan.

SHORT PROJECT DESCRIPTION Provide a short abstract of max. 100 words The objectives of ADECOS were to develop the oxyfuel process for hard and brown coal ready to
be used for a pilot plant. The development included design of the combustion chamber, burners,
flue gas cleaning and process optimization. Results of simulations were validated by
comprehensive experimental investigations. A focus was laid on the achievable purity of the
separated CO2 as a function of the efficiency loss.
The oxyfuel process should (and could) be designed so that a power plant efficiency of 36 %
could be exceeded including compression of the separated CO2.
PROJECT GOALS & OBJECTIVES
Goals: Indicate main qualitative goals
Minimize the efficiency loss for CO2 capture;
development of a process ready to be used in demo
plants; achieve a purity of CO2 ready for storage

Objectives: Indicate quantitative objectives (similar to KPIs
of the IPs of the EIIs). Also indicate intermediate
milestones where applicable.
Minimize the efficiency loss to 8-10%
PERFORMANCE OF THE PROJECT
Assumed state-of-the-art: Describe quantitatively the state-of-the-art that
the project objectives are based upon
Post combustion capture with amine-based liquids
(efficiency loss ca 10%; steam power plant process
with air; first lab scale results for oxyfuel prior to the
project were available
Achievements so far: If intermediate results are available, please
indicate the current achievements (qualitative
and/or quantitative)
Objectives have been reached. Results of the projects
have been included for the design of the 30 MW
oxyfuel pilot plant “Schwarze Pumpe” by Vattenfall.
Difficulties and potential risks: Indicate briefly problems encountered or to be
encountered in the short term (e. g. overall
legislative context, public acceptance, permitting,
etc.)
Pending legal decisions in Germany, public
acceptance of CCS; technologies for further
reduction of the energy demand for oxygen
production are still under development (e.g.
membrane processes)
FUNDING & BUDGET
Funding programme: Give the name of funding programme
5.Energieforschungsprogramm
(COORETEC-Initiative)
Funding public entity: Indicate which public entity is in charge of
/manages the programme

TOWARDS COMMERCIALISATION
Indicate (new) products and/or services expected from the project. Are new business models
required for commercialisation of the project results? Highlight expected commercialisation benefits, e.g. patents, spin-offs, new products, business partnerships
Process has been developed ready for demonstration. This gives the chance to plant suppliers and
plant operators to build and operate a demo plant > 250 MW.
In addition, current research is to use the flue gas components SO2, NOx, CO2 commercially.
From a scientific point of view, the next step is to adopt the process for fluidised bed combustion
and to investigate special effects like slagging and corrosion. The first is performed in the project
ADECOS-ZWSF, the latter will be performed soon.
SYNERGIES WITH THE IMPLEMENTATION PLANS OF THE EUROPEAN
INDUSTRIAL INITIATIVES – NETWORKING – KNOWLEDGE SHARING Contribution to/Relevance with the IPs: To your opinion, to which activities of the IPs of the EIIs
is this project related to? Indicate contributions / complements. Please note that reference here is made to the activities of the IPs as published in http://setis.ec.europa.eu/activities/implementation-plans
CCS European Industrial Initiative Implementation Plan indicates Oxyfuel as one promising option which
should be tested at demonstration scale. ADECOS and the Vattenfall Oxyfuel Pilot Plant together are the
basis to demonstrate Oxyfuel at a scale l.e. 250 MW.
Potential synergies with other projects and activities: Can you identify any other project(s) in
your country, another MS or at European level that could be synergetic with this project?
In Europe, different projects are underway to develop/test the oxyfuel process (France, Spain,
Poland). Different EII projects have been proposed where the results of ADECOS could be used
for. In addition, some research projects (like the fluidised bed combustion project in Spain) could
cooperate with ADECOS-ZWSF.
Networking: Would you be willing to share results with the projects identified above? Indicate willingness to networking and also potential conditions
Cannot be answered by PtJ
Knowledge sharing: Would the above mentioned Networking necessitate a formal knowledge
sharing agreement? To your view would this be the preferred route?
Cannot be answered by PtJ
Future steps: Are there any follow-up activities considered after the completion of your project?
Is there a need to scale up activities in this topic at European level?
Oxyfuel Power Plant Schwarze Pumpe is just being operated. 250 MW demonstration plant is
being planned. Demo plant is supported by EEPR, further support should be given by NER 300.

B. RESOURCES AND INVESTMENTS
RESOURCES AND INVESTMENTS
Describe in short any RD&D infrastructures that your project relies on. Are these available or do
they need to be developed?
Technical infrastructure of the universities involved in ADECOS was used. Additional
infrastructure has been installed using support by BMWi.
If these are to be developed, what is the corresponding investment required? What is the
allocated budget (€) for this investment in your project?
Included in the project budget shown above
